Couple of years back I was told that they never rank the alternate list. Instead they look at their withdrawals and then look through the alternate list to find someone similar to the individual that withdrew – trying to work a certain level of diversity (age, gender, background, etc.) into their incoming class.

Hmm... the woman on the phone told me point blank that their alternate list is ranked... so confusing. 😕

As I said, that was a couple years back - things may have (probably have) changed.
If the list is actually ranked it would certainly make it easier for them to decide who to accept off the alternate list. And since it's easier that is probably how it is now being done.

My suggestion to you all is to start on your Plan B (job hunting, filling out the AMCAS application for next year, etc), while trying to keep your hopes up. That way you have a start on the process for next year (early submission of applications) if Wayne doesn't come through for you this year. Another thing to remember is that a large number of people in each class are re-applicants. I think that sometimes Wayne does that just to see if you are serious about med school at Wayne.

Wow, they're really gonna make us wait even longer? What a shame. 🙁

I feel for you guys. Wayne State does take a very long time to make decisions...

My friend who was accepted to med school there last year didn't find out until late August.

First years start at Wayne in early August... so I am guessing that you meant to type late July (or maybe early August). Which doesn't surprise me since one of my classmates got the call during orientation week.

I just called the admissions office this morning and the receptionist confirmed that the alternate list is ranked and that they have 200 people on it. Im sure this isn't new information to many of us, but at least we all know now.

If only we knew where we stand on that list. 🙁

wow 200 people. I doubt 200 people dropped from their class. That is incredible. I have some hope. Now I just have to hold it out until June, or maybe even longer.

I'd also like to know the number of expected openings,

The admissions office staff is very receptive to questions, Im sure right now they dont know how many openings they expect to fill because students are still withdrawing their seats, but it appears that we will be hearing from them in a few weeks.

I wonder if our ranking on the waitlist has anything to do with when we interviewed or if it is totally based on something else. hmph.

after miami, the person who started this thread said he got taken off the waitlist, it has me thinking how many others they took off!!! do you guys think they would notify us if we are taken off? (assuming our application was still being considered at the april call in date)

who are you talking about? someone was already taken off the waitlist?

I posted after miam and I was saying I heard someone had been taken off, im not sure if it was true or not.

I hope they aren't secretly pulling people off. That would be so upsetting! I think they call you to notify you.

this was a posting earlier in this thread by miami that i am referring to:

"They do reject off the waitlist. I called today (4-28) to check my status
and they told me my file was no longer under consideration.
Im not a MI resident so it may have something to do with it
but I have good stats and Im out. Good luck to you all."

Oh man. Good call. I wonder if they would notify. I feel like they would not.

yeah, it might be a good idea to call and ask if you are still on the list if you did not call in last month. That is the reason that I called them a couple of days ago, to make sure I am still being considered.

they only have 200 people on their alternate list? wow that seems to be a small number considering it has the largest class size in the country.

Im new to this, what is the normal size of an alternate list. When I heard 200, I was starting to lose hope. :scared:

The thing that has me most worried is the post that said their waiting list moves relative to UofM, which doesn't sound good to me. And, I'm just so frustrated with their lack of information and promptness (sorry, had to vent) 🙁

have you heard anything specific about UofM's waitlist not moving? I heard last year it was bad (little or no movement) but I have not heard anything for this year. the 'officially withdrew from' shows at least 5 people have withdrawn from u of m...even though that is no comparison to 200, it is still hope!

That worries me also. I hope we start hearing something next week...

Rumor has it that as of Monday Michigan had received 153 deposits and still needed to hear from ~30 students. The target class size is 170, though last year they ended up with 177 (taking no one off the waitlist.)

Good Luck! :luck:

I don't think that Wayne's waitlist moves relative to U of M's waitlist. Whoever told you that, probably meant that Wayne accepts a lot of people who are ACCEPTED at U of M, but do not withdraw their apps until May 15th. My guess is that there are a fair number of people like that, seeing as almost every applicant in MI will apply to both schools, and anyone who gets into U of M will choose it over wayne (well, not everyone, but almost everyone). Then, figure that alot of people who get into U of M will probably also be in at Wayne. So, I think this is not something to worry about, it is actually a good thing. Lots of people will have withdrawn from wayne, and will go to U of M.

Maybe, but there could have been a good number of people, accepted at UofM and Wayne, who withdrew from Wayne well before May 15. Who knows, if what you say is true, it is a good thing. Another good thing: I know of one more person who got accepted at Case Western and so, withdrew from Wayne...one and hoping for many more 🙂

I don't remember the exact post, but I think they were referring to Michigan's waitlist movement. If Michigan accepts in-state applicants off the waitlist, there is a reasonable chance that some/many of them will have committed to Wayne and will then drop their spot (post May 15) when they accept Michigan's offer. This would create a spot in Wayne's class.

That said, I have a hard time believing that makes a significant impact on WSU's waitlist movement.

Either way, good luck! :luck:

I also don't believe it will have a significant impact on the waitlist. Although, I do understand the logic behind it.

Anyway, good luck everyone. My new countdown to June 1st has started, hopefully we'll see some movement then!

Is the Wayne waitlist the only hope for any of you this year? If so, when do you all plan on turning in your AMCAS for next year?

Yes, Wayne is my only hope. 🙁 I haven't started on my AMCAS yet, but I will probably start next week... If I don't get in, I'm unsure as to what I should do for next year because my GPA is pretty good, but my MCAT isn't. I already retook it this past April. So, if my MCAT turns out fine, perhaps a research job. I don't know...

Thanks, I need the luck, and same to you. I just want to hear a response already. I'm sick of waiting. I've waited all year only to wait some more... Ahh!

Yea I need all the luck I can get too. Two waitlists, and I started my PS more than a year ago. Its crazy! I am praying though, after such a long wait a few more weeks isn't going to do much harm.

I have the opposite problem-- I have a great MCAT, but a not so great GPA. I have no idea what my backup is at this point, im not sure ive im ready to apply to the carribean.

I am in the same boat too. Which is why the fact that Wayne won't give you any details concerning your application until you have been rejected bothers me. Anyway, I have already begun working on my AMCAS for next year. Since I had to take the August MCAT last year, I am hoping that by submitting a completed application this year, I will have better chances my second time around. (I'm not applying to Caribbean though). Anyway, hopefully, Wayne will start calling soon and we'll all get in before the end of June 😳

It makes no sense. I don't quite understand why they wouldn't help you out before your rejected, especially those who are on the waitlist. Absolutely ridiculous and puts us in a bad situation.

bump.

and i wonder who was told right. will the waitlist move this week or next? oh the anticipation.

Im am praying there will be some waitlist movement this week and that we all hear some great news!!!!:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Thanks for the electrical update. Whats up with their power? Is someone not paying the bill?

I think somebody cut a cable by mistake...again

No problem. I think it is due to what newbie1kenobi said it is, but I'm not sure. I called and there was a message saying the power was down in Scott Hall. Hopefully, tomorrow that list starts moving!!

Imagine doing anatomy and the power goes out... :scared:

You mean like happened 😱 during the black out in 2003?
I heard that was an interesting ( :scared: ) afternoon down in the anatomy lab. :meanie:
As much as I wish I had gotten off from the alternate list and into the class of 2007, I'm glad I didn't have to deal with that.

Their office is still closed today, with the same recording from yesterday. How upsetting. I feel like this is just pushing our lucky days back farther and farther.

Yep. I called today and got the same message. It's annoying... repair your power problem already and let me in!

From an e-mail sent out this afternoon:
BOTH SCOTT HALL AND SHIFFMAN MEDICAL LIBRARY are expected to resume normal operations and BE OPEN on Wednesday, May 24, 2006. Unless this message is changed again........all students, faculty, and staff are to return to WSU-SOM on Wednesday.

I called this morning. She said at the earliest waitlist movement will not begin until next week.

I wonder what the latest is and how many spots they have so far...

I might call and ask that... You would think they would have had several spots upon up by now since May 15 has passed.

Just withdrew today from Wayne, good luck to you all!

Let us know if you do end up calling. I don't want to bother them too much.

When did all you guys interview? I wonder if getting off of the waitlist is correlated to that. I interview in late January.

I asked that very question and I was told that the waitlist is not ranked according to when you interviewed. There is whole process but basically we are all given a ranking number and they place us in numerical order.

Did they indicate if they would let you know generally where you stand on the list?
