"Dr. Norman will not be available to meet with anyone on the alternate list. You should do a self evaluation and determine what areas of your application might need to be strengthened and begin working on those areas if you have not already done so."

What garbage. How do I know what they are thinking about me? Maybe its something they see in others that I don't have. There's so many things people can do to improve their application and it's impossible to tell if it would help without some kind of advice or constructive criticism. I feel like I'm going to be wasting my time and money for another year of the same crap.

I was told by Dawn Street you can meet with him once you have been rejected, but not before that - which I believe still isn't right, btw.

I am really frustrated about the same thing because, according to the statistics, I should have been a very competitive applicant at Wayne, as should have been other people on this thread. I just can't understand why they are so unwilling to meet with people to discuss their application. I feel like I have wasted so much time and energy already on Wayne State that it has really changed my opinion about them.

Did anyone get that long email last night?

I am officially sad. 🙁

Monday is a new week and hopefully a good week for some waitlisters. If anyone gets a call or extra information please post. Any small bit of information might just be enough to give some of us a positive outlook.

I just heard some good news from Wayne and I will be attending there this fall. I am thrilled! If you have any questions about anything just PM me and I hope for the same good fortune to come by all of you in the near future!

Congratulations. How did you hear, email or phone? Is there a certain day during the week they send out batches of acceptances?

Back in the day it was by phone, don't know about now.

doubt it.

The further into the summer we get the "batches of acceptances" are going to increasingly be batches of one.

Hey.. They called me. The funny thing is that I had their number saved because I used to call them about the waitlist stuff, so I knew it was them.

Good luck to everyone.

That is fabulous news, and I am happy to hear that things have worked out for you. Out of curiosity, did you hear from them before or after they sent that email out to all students on the waitlist. That email dashed all hopes for me, so it would cheer me up to know that WSU still does have some movement.

I'm pretty sure it was after...

WTF!

I say everyone should bail from Wayne's waitlist and we'll see how 'full' they are come August!

Anybody know why they increased the enrollment to 290-300? Are they just trying to get more tuition?

You could try this but there are enough people out there that would tell you that they were with you – just so they could watch you jump off the list and help out their odds.

Pressure from the AAMC due to the feared “doctor shortage”
sailingdoc said:

Probably – but that is a separate sore subject with some of us that are currently dealing with paying their tuition.

Then why is the AAMC targeting only Wayne and not the other state schools (UM and MSU) to add spots? I don't buy it unless Wayne is the only one that can absorb the additional students without making any additional investment (equals watered down education for entering students)...my theory:
Wayne is doing it for the money. which is part of a bigger (mis)management issue!

I wouldn't be surprised if in the next couple of years the other Michigan medical schools raise their enrollment numbers as well. Unlike Umich, Wayne is also competing for students with MSU DO, the #2 DO school in the country.

As much as I hate to defend portions of the administration at WSU-SOM...

Nobody said that it was just Wayne that was getting pressure from the AAMC – might just be that Wayne had less to do in the short-term to 'accommodate' an increase in class size.

If you don’t believe that; then try this:
“The AAMC surveyed the 125 U.S. allopathic medical school deans regarding their expansion plans. Of the 116 who responded, 40 percent indicated they had already increased their enrollment or "definitely" or "probably" planned to, with another 16 percent saying that they "possibly" would do so. But those increases alone may still not be enough to meet the growing demand for doctors in the next few decades; current efforts are projected to boost enrollment by only about 9 to 12 percent between 2005 and 2015.” (Source this quote is http://www.aamc.org/newsroom/reporter/april06/expansion.htm)

and this:

“Growing evidence indicates that the nation will face a shortage of physicians in the next one to two decades. In 2005, the AAMC recommended a 15 percent increase in the number of U.S. medical school graduates by 2015, a small increase given the near-zero growth in M.D.-granting institutions over the last two decades.” (From http://www.aamc.org/data/aib/aibissues/aibvol6_no2.pdf)

MSU is increasing its size by 50 in 2007... they are expanding to a grand rapids program i believe... sucks though cuz im on thier waitlist now and it has no effect on me

I believe that would be MSU-CHM that you are referring to.

Along those lines I have heard talk of MSU-COM opening a branch campus somewhere in the Detroit area (DMC was/is actually trying to land them).

I’m afraid that I don’t have any websites to list to back me up on this; but it would be logical to figure that the number of D.O.s graduating each year is also being increased to deal with the anticipated doctor shortage – based on the fact that in the past few years a bunch of new schools/branch campuses have been opened.

MSU-COM has increased class size. (Now the joint classes with CHM must be held in a different lecture hall because CHM's is not large enough to accomidate the increased COM class size.)

MSU-CHM plans (as it stands now) to basically open a new med school in Grand Rapids. It is/was yet to be determined whether applicants would fill out one application for both campuses, or if there would be two different applications. The initial idea is that E. Lansing would maintain the focus on primary care, and Grand Rapids (utilizing resourced like the Van Andel institute) would focus more on research. This will not happen all at once. Second year classes will probably be added first, with the more facilities-intensive first year classes added some time later. (Many third and fourth year students already go to GR, so there isn't nearly as much to do for these years.)

do you know how many students msu-chm puts on their waitlist? see, if it's like, 50 or something, we'd be set 🙁 or i wish they did what they do at msu-com. with msu-com, if you get waitlisted, you are guaranteed a spot in their entering class of the following year. i wouldn't mind that either. then i could just chill and take a year off 🙂

was it dawn street that called? or just a secretary? just wondering because I emailed dawn on friday and she had an out of office reply that she would be gone from june 9th to the 18..

Ok, I could have sworn I read somewhere (and that somewhere being Dawn Street's last email) that they were going to send rejection letters to those on the 'bottom' of the list.

Now, I am starting to think I dreamed the whole thing. Since I certainly can't find it.

Does anyone know what I am talking about, or is this just all a figment of my imagination.

when i called in, they told me they would send out rejection letters to the bottom half. i didn't read it anywhere, but i certainly have heard the same information from the admissions office.

Now my next question, and the question that raises my blood pressure a bit is....

Has anyone gotten a rejection like that yet? Or are they still to come? 😕

didnt the email from dawn street say 'we do not plan on removing any one from the list at this time'???

They are playing the semantics game with us. They have a withdrawls matched up with acceptances. They give a week for the people to decide and so they can't say they will pick up people from the list in the future. It's in dynamic equilibrium!

her email did say that. do you think she meant they wouldn't remove people from waitlist to let them in, but rejections are still possible?

That is what I think it means, but I would be surprised if they actually send out anything in a timely fashion--that is before September.

Classes start July 31st so I think we would hear something way before September.

Maybe, I spoke with some students that said that they wait until after classes start to even get rejection letters started, so it is possible they will come in August, after classes begin. Hopefully, though, they will come sooner, it would be nice to have some closure.

Guess that is always possible - I don't recall when it was that I got the rejection letter in the years that I didn't get off the list.

But unlike one school I applied to (which shall go unnamed) at least Wayne sent a rejection letter.
It may have been after classes already started, so I knew it was coming - but closure on an application cycle can feel good.

One way to look at it is the later the rejection letter shows up the higher you probably are on the alternate list - since they don't want to send the letter and then have a seat open up for you.

I seem to remember my mother telling me on the phone that Wayne States rejection letter came for me while I was cooling my heels in a Red Cross Shelter in Baton Rouge... Which would put the date in early September. However, I already knew what the answer was, because I had been told they would offer places off the waitlist up until the first day of class, which was something like the second week in August, since the first week is Orientation.

Though I can't really say I am a reliable authority on any of the above information.

The person who called did not tell me their name-- it was a woman, but not the undergrad who works there (I can recognize her voice)-- so perhaps it was Dawn? I just heard of another student getting off of their waitlist this week. Good luck to everyone, their administration is quite unorganized.

in terms of movement, a friend of mine got off the waitlist at georgetown and he just told wayne he will no longer be attedning, about a day ago... so someone else will be getting off the waitlist.

When did you interview, if you don't mind me asking? And did you get a call or an e-mail?

I got off the waitlist this morning, so there is movement. Im gonna continue to pray for you all

Hey there,

Dawn Street called me earlier today when I wasn't around and left a voiemail which asked me to call her back. When I did, she asked for my AMCAS ID and then gave me the good news. I interviewed April 5th.

Congratulations to you as well. That's great news.

I hope I hear something good, but I doubt it's going to happen. Everything has been going so poorly this year, I just have come to expect the worst...

Congratulations to all of you who got in today. One of my friends just got off the waitlist at UM Medical today, who was going to attend Wayne State. So, there will be more movement to come on the waitlist here.
