I am trying to call WSU Admissions to find out my status (accepted/rejected/wailtlisted) because they told us to call today (2-22) but the phone is busy. I am just wondering if this bothers anyone else who is trying to find out their status also. I hate waiting knowing that they have already made a decision on my application. Good luck to all who are waiting to hear back from WSU. :luck:

I interviewed there today, and their phones were ringing off the hook. Just keep trying. But, yes, the decisions have been made and are being told over the phone.
Good luck, and wish me the same!!!

Keep plugging, took me like 2 hours to get through when I got in last year. Make sure you tell us how it will go!

Awesome!

If you decide to go I'll be graduating w/ you.

Make sure you post in the "class thread" in the allo forum.

congrats you guys, I am still waiting to get in there. Still on the waitlist as of today. Did anyone get in off of the waitlist this time around? If so, when did you interview? SOmeone told me that Wayne ranks the waitlist based on when the interview took place, so I am curious to see if people who are getting in off the waitlist did indeed interview early.

Most people who interview early at Wayne don't get in, or at least, don't end up going there. The people who get early interviews are the 4.0/45ers bound for Harvard or Washington, so you're at a statistical advantage if you were interviewed after say....mid October.

Wayne really only takes people who it believes are actually going to go to the school. Because it has a HUGE class (300 next year - largest single campus medical school in the nation) there is a TON of waitlist movement to fill the class.

All in all I say that if you're on the waitlist you're in good shape. That means they haven't rejected you because your numbers are too high and since there is a ton of movement you'll move up quickly.

👍

Best odds (IMHO):

In state resident / go to one of "big three" feeder schools / 3.5-3.7 GPA / 28-32 MCAT / made it clear you want to go to school there / made it clear you want to serve in the Detroit area / interview after mid-October

myself and 2 other people i know all had mcats in the area of 33-35 and gpa's above 3.9 from small unknown state school and another mid-sized state university. we were in the first group of interviews and were all accepted right away. A lot of people play off the interview like it doesn't matter or they come and don't know anything about the school. One thing that was interesting during my interview was that the interviewer actually said, "you will have a lot of interviews. please do not forget about wayne", which is where i chipped about how i really wanted to go here over other places and why. a lot of the guys with the high numbers do not put the effort into wayne's interview- this is their mistake. i do not think wayne looks down on people with higher stats though.

With the randomness aside (i.e. interviewer doesn't like your hair color), the stats only get your foot in the door. After that, you have to convey your interest in wayne and your committment to medicine. If you do this successfully, you will be accepted.

Like Albion and CMU? Or Adrian and WMU? It doesn't suprise me that you got an early interview with those numbers, but alot of my fellow students claim they didn't interview until just before halloween.

What are your stats (those who have gotten in...i.e. Scalpellum)? What are your chances of admission once put on the waitlist?

not those schools. there are only 3 of us from the one school and maybe like 3 from the other (@ of whom i am friends with). anyways, i think some of depends on when you submit your AMCAS and when you get your secondaries in. we submitted our amcas by the end of june (at least me and another guy) and then ahd our secondaries done a day or two after receiving them.

Dudes-

Here is a little personal history. Went to Small state school undergrad (definately NOT a premed factory) Graduated with 3.9, sh*tty MCAT of 25 (I had no idea people studied for a month for this baby!) Put on waitlist, plucked off of it in mid-May. Now a fourth year graduating in the top 20 percent of my class.

My point(s)
1. You dont have to go to the big 3 to get in
2. You can bomb the MCAT and still get in (and still rock med school too)
3. You can get in off of the waitlist (I personally know of a lot, who did well)
4. Wayne is a GREAT place to get your medical training. 😎

MCAT: 30M
GPA: 3.85
BCPM: 3.96

In response to Fun8stuff and Astudent: I interviewed in September. I DO have high stats for WSU (4.0 33Q), however, I don't think that that is what is hurting me right now because in December I sent a letter of intent to WSU, making it clear that they are my first choice. As for the bad interview scendario, I definitely had a good interview at Wayne. I know alot about the school, and about the med school process in general, and it came through just fine in the interview. The interviewer was even giving me positive feedback. I honestly don't know what went wrong with my application there. Im hoping that they do take me off of the waitlist though.

Have you made sure that they have your secondaries and all your info. I have heard of other people at other schools getting waitlisted bc of something like that (although you think they would have let you know at interview..??). Another thing you might try and do is email someone in the administration and ask them what else you can do ?? It is very stranged that you were waitlisted since you feel your interview went well. I had a friend with 32 4.0 who didnt get in the first time, but it was because this really old weird guy interviewed him. The guy was 2 hrs late to the interview and came wearing a checkered suit, no socks, and his tie on backwards. He ripped into my friend with a bunch of ethical stuff.

Ok, "big three" feeder schools... UMich, MSU, and... ? I though it was just big two, can someone fill me in ? Oh, and what are the chances of someone with crap overall GPA, great Post-Bacc, solid MCAT getting in ? I want to stay in michigan damn it!

is it bad news to be placed on the alternate list now...late february. considering its not a ranked list, seems like i'm on the bottom of the pile.

Wayne state interviews in a rolling admissions "quarter" system. They interview the most competitive apps first and trickle on down the line so that you are competiting against like-minded peers. You can get in, no prob.
best advice - if you get on the waitlist, don't wait!! write, email, call. keep your file active, annoy the crap out of 'em, they want to see how desparate you are.

Wayne pulls A LOT of people off the waitlist, so I wouldn't be that worried. I already know several people who will be withdrawing their acceptances come April.

why are they withdrawing?...
why didn't you choose wayne?

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, so I'm going to go ahead and answer: Because I got into UMich. And the others are withdrawing for similar reasons.

This may not be the third school that AStudent was thinking of, but Grand Valley State University has been a pretty big Wayne St. feeder school. I know that the current 4th year class at Wayne has 10+ students from GVSU. That represented the largest number of students from one undergrad institution in the same med school class at any medical school in the country.

uh... no. not even close (unless i am misunderstanding you). almost a third of wayne's class is made up of UM students (80+) every year, so there is no way your stat is right. This is the way it is in a lot of states- the med schools will have a lot of students from the big university in the area. i actually have the stats right here for this years entering class (i give tours):

UM: 86 students
MSU: 22
WSU: 17
Albion: 8
Hope: 7
Oakland: 7
Alma: 5
UM, dearborn: 5
WMU: 5
K-college: 4
Ferris: 3
GVSU: 3
Northern Mich: 3
UChicago: 3
Nortre Dame: 3

This year's entering class? So these are just those who are accepted (but may not matriculate)?

i believe those represent matriculated students

Those statistics cannot represent both this year's class and matriculated students, as this year's class has not yet matriculated! If it's this year's class, for example, Wayne St. has my $50 deposit and I'm included on that list. But until I have the chance to compare all of my financial aid offers I'm not making my final decision and committing to one school.

sorry for not being more specific. they represent matriculated students for the class of 2009.

That was what I was told by a current 4th year student. I don't have access to any admissions office statistics, but it sounds like there have to be more Michigan students in that class...

This is slightly off topic, but has anyone heard anything new regarding Wayne's negotiations with DMC? Their contract expires March 31st! This is right around the corner!

For the class of 2008, Wayne accepted 142 UM-AA students, so I can believe ~80-90 matriculated (if they accepted about the same number of UM students for the class of 2009).

fun8stuff said:
where do u find these stats? i am interested in how many apply vs. how many get in...

http://www.med.wayne.edu/admissions/applying/statistics.asp
The UM undergrad pre-med office has all the 411 on UM students. This info is not released to non-UM students.

Here's the 2004 data (class of 2008):
Total applied: 591
Total accepted to at least one school: 322
Total matriculated: 300
Total number of acceptances given to UM students at the big three:
Michigan State 40
U Michigan 48 (35 matriculated)
Wayne State 142

For 2002:
Michigan State 30
U of Michigan 74 (60 matriculated)
Wayne State 119

A student can hold multiple acceptances, meaning for 2004, 40+48+142 < actual number of students.

I don't have the 2003 data.
