So today, I was volunteering at the University Hospital, working basically at the Nurse's station and while I was just taking calls and doing some paperwork, I saw my PI, whose lab I left back in May to focus on MCATs (we left on good terms). Well obviously the area was slightly hectic, but I wasn't really busy at the moment and made eye contact with him and waved hi to him but he didn't respond *aka ignored.....* (at which inside I went T_______T). Of course, I didn't like say "Hi" really loud or go out of my way to get his attention, but I know I made eye contact and he was like 5.5 feet away from me. He wasn't actually busy because he wasn't discussing about any certain cases with anyone like the other attendings and residents, he seemed like he was just wandering around. So yeah this is just a curiosity question, but is this behavior normal?

I thought about it and thought perhaps from his point of view, maybe he'd feel awkward if he said hi to a volunteer he knows in front of all his colleagues, nurses, and others thus drawing attention to himself and me? So yeah, just wanted to know what other people's thoughts on this are. I'm not really concerned or anything just curious.

don't trip he was most likely spacing out while thinking about something abnormally complex (like how to make sure his wife isn't pissed at him)

Some PIs respond to undergrads like normal people respond to gnats, even if you're on good terms. You wouldn't say hi back if a gnat said hi to you, would you?

I think this is mostly because the ratio of PIs : undergrads is really, really low.

haha yeah im not really tripping.

Yeah I would agree w/you about the PI:undergrad ratio except that our lab was small (7 people?) and I was the only undergrad in our lab lol. But yeah, I think he was most likely spacing out about something.

Funny thing is that this happened once before except he kinda gave me a smile once. But yeah, just wondering

You're looking too much into it. As someone who works in a hospital, a lot of times even when people don't "look" busy in a hospital, they're probably thinking about something.
