Western/Comp class of 2005

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
about the dog situation: portofino in chino hills allows pets up to 25 pounds, i think it is.... i am not sure of any other places that allow pets...
speaking of portofino. does anybody know how far away it is from western? is there much traffic or is it not worth it to move up there?

Apparently I am gonna be in some trouble.....Dali weighs closer to 70lbs...
I seem to have a dilemma....the first of many I am sure....

Do you think they are strict?

Yosh- Well, as long as they allow dogs, what you could try doing is just take Dali with you and try not to walk him inside the apartment complex but outside at night. Since they allow dogs, barking shouldn't be a concern... but I suppose they only want smaller dogs. I thought there are other apartments that allow pets, but perhaps not dogs in some. I have heard of other friends in Orange County having trouble finding apartments that would take larger dogs (one has a big and friendly bulldog), but people seem to get around it one way or another.

Smiles- I assume you're talking about the Portofino Apts. in Chino Hills. Yahoo! maps says it's only about 4 miles/10 minutes drive.. basically getting onto Garey Ave. and driving north all the way. I don't what the traffic is like or if you can take other routes (drive Towne Ave. all the way north instead?), but I will try to see what the traffic is like in June/July. The things that would slow you down for these streets are the number of lights, residential areas, and school zones. I think distance-wise, it's not a bad commute, but traffic maybe a concern. Probably a 15-20 minute drive at most? Still, the Portofino Apts. in Chino Hills look pretty darn nice, especially if you can find a roommate to split a double with. From the pictures (which can be misleading at times), I want to spend some time at that pool/spa!

pyoj- buying a refurbished fridge for $100-$200 definitely sounds better than shelling out the extra cash each month that could be spent elsewhere.

-Btw, page 21!

portafinos and eagle canyon are both nice, took me 7 mins to get there to school last week. all depends on the lights, plus chino hills seems like my top choice so far cuz its close to alot of usefull shops and a huge la ftiness. and closer to my orange home than any of the other place, let me know if anyone else may live there

I'm going to live in Portofino, it's about 8-10 mins away if you go down Towne to school. Plus, since I live in Costa Mesa. Taking the 71 south will be easier.

hey pg. 21! yosh...what kinda dog do you have? just curious cuz our g. sheperd mix is about 80 lbs. and i sure wouldn't want him in the apartment (too much fur)!

on another note..what does everyone think of all the commercials on tv for law firms enticing patients to call and discuss any medical probs. related to taking new drugs? every two mins i see a new commercial promising $ to patients who have been administered drug x. hope i didn't confuse anyone there. seems like lawyers are trying to file lots of suits against pharm companies and docs these days. are my observations correct? just felt like keeping the thread going...gotta get 500 posts as someone said. see i didn't have anything useful to say 😀

prit

Hey Eric714,
where in Costa Mesa do you live? My address is Newport Beach, but I am about 30 seconds away from the border of Costa Mesa. I live to a big Blockbuster at 17th and Irvine Ave.. within 5 minutes of Triangle Square Mall...

Yeah it did seem like Towne Ave. was a bit faster to take than Garey.. dunno what it's like with traffic and crossings in the morning though..

About your (big) puppy, Dali... Have you tried doing an apartment search for places that accept pets? A great one is the apartment search around colleges on www.realtor.com. A bunch of listings come up when you search for pet-friendly... hopefully they will be big-pet-friendly also!

I am gonna go check it and let you all know...Thanks a million!!!

I'll keep you all posted!!!

hey ERIC how do u get to school from chino hills on towne. isnt garey the only direct street there. i thought towne was on the pomona claremont side..

who else lives in OC, im right of chapman and the 55...

i got my fin aid pack today, they seemed to give me alot of money, but all but 4 grand goes straight to school needs it seems.
what are the interest rates on these thing, im not sure if i should use em

peace

Someone mentioned about a group discount on the lap tops, right? I'm also looking into that as well. We should all shop around and compare prices b/f we actually buy 'em. When do you think it's a good time to buy them anyway, June or July?

I just started looking at laptops...I really think that we should get together and talk to Dell or Compaq(as Robb suggested) and see if we can get a discount....

Keep me posted and count me in!!!!

20 days till L.A.!!!

Hey Vdubpower- I don't remember if there is a Towne exit on hwy. 60, but last time I drove up there, I exited Garey and accidentally ended up on Towne Ave. driving around that "figure 8 highway area". I took Towne all the way north to the Plaza apts. and the school. Doesn't seem like you have to drive through the downtown portion so that might save a little time, but there is one elementary school along the way that might have school zones in the morning.

Actually, I used to drive up to Chapman and 55 because my club lacrosse team would practice at Rancho Santiago Middle School. The area gets pretty hot though.. and I'm guessing the air quality isn't much better heh.

Smiles and Yosh- You know.. I used www.aptsforrent.com to check out apartments and even though they let you search for apartments that are "pet friendly", that term is pretty general.. they might allow cats only.. maybe small dogs, and rarely larger dogs. My friend pays a ton because he is living in practically the only place he could keep his larger dog in his area (Tustin Ranch). Hopefully you'll find a place that'll take Dali..

I found a bunch of places that are "apparently" dog friendly....so I may be ok. When I lived in Miami with her...we never even told the management that there was a dog.
There was a $700 "non-refundable" pet deposit, so..nothing was ever said...and we all lived happily ever after. Apparenlty the key is to find a place that allows dogs...and I'll be fine.
She doesn't bark...and isn't loud at all..so I don't expect any complaints...I just couldn't imagine leaving her in NY...besides...my parents would KILL me..

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Hello all,

Innerpower and Yosh mentioned a possible group purchase on laptops. I contacted Compaq direct, and they offered us this:

850MHz Pentium III processor
256MB SDRAM memory
14.1 TFT Active Matrix display
20.0 gigabyte hard drive
DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive
High-capacity LiIon battery
10/100 network card
JBL Pro audio speakers
weighs 5.6 lbs. 1.3 inches thin

The Compaq representative said he also has a special going on, and will add in an extra battery when we purchase. The minimum number required for a group purchase is 5 individuals, and futher discount is given if we have more than 10. The price he quoted was $2080 for the group purchase on this specific model. If any of you are interested, check out this link http://athome.compaq.com/default.asp?ProductLineId=440&page=families

If you have any questions about the laptop in mind, you can contact the representative I spoke with. His name is Mike at 888-202-4618 EXT. 15689

Please let me know what you all think so I can set this up.

Rob

Robb,
I am interested....I just want to know what software it comes with..as far as the Microsoft stuff we need. I think that it is a great idea.
I also want to make sure the the RAM is only one dimm, and not two..as two DIMMS would not leave any space for extra RAM to to added.
Keep me posted....you have my vote!

I spoke with my COMP friend who was on the fence about attending...and he has made his decision to attend COMP, so I officially have a roomate....now for the bad part...

Question:
I know a lot of you have been out there looking at apts. I am coming in June, as you all know, and was supposed to be staying with a friend of my future COMP roomate's. Apparently...this fell through, and now have no place in mind.
Here's the question....FINALLY....
Anyone know of reasonable hotel/motel in the area that we can stay in? I am not familiar with the area....and need something economical for the week...

Any suggestions would be helpful....

L.A. bound...and HOMELESS!!!!

Thanks All!!!!

hey everyone

rob...laptop sounds good. but i'm guessing that it prolly comes w/windows me and not 2000? also, ms office 2000/xp isn't included right? and as yosh mentioned...it would be cool if the memory was a single dimm. i especially like the size/weight...

yosh, i don't think i know the area well enough to help you out on where to stay. but if you were thinking pomona how about that place they mentioned when we got our interview invites? i just drove from home early in the morning but i believe the motel had a good deal?

one more thing...i'm kinda confused between borrowing some loans from westernU or sticking w/my current loan from educaid. anyone thinking the same thing? it would be easier for me to get all my loans from a single source (educaid) and not have to worry about that stafford loan westernU is offering. any suggestions?

prit

Just out of curiosity..where is everyone from? I am interested to know.....
Wanna see who I am gonna be in school with this year....

the cpu thing seems quite intriging, but its probly best to wait untill we really need em cuz they get cheaper and higher models come out, but this compaq seems light a good deal tho

Hey RobbC,
you sent me an email a few days ago, but all I got was a blank e-mail! Might want to send it again if there was supposed to be a message. As for the Compaq laptop, that sounds like a pretty stocked laptop.. a bit high-end for some people who don't intend on using their computers a whole lot. I would be interested in something like that except I wouldn't mind if they bumped down the price a few hundred dollars. I wasn't planning on spending more than $1500 or so.. so I will keep an eye out if I see anything. Do you think we could try talking to Dell or Gateway for a similar setup and see if they can beat the price? (along with the group discount)

Prit, I imagine the Compaq must come with some free software.. if we get a group discount, they will most likely give us all that stuff for free (i.e. MS Office 2k). Yeah, the single DIMM would be great, but 256MB ram is probably more than enough for most of our applications. My question is does it come with a floppy drive or not... that DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo sounds great if it's internal. That system is pretty nice though.. sad that it will be better than my desktop computer though!

Yosh- Hey John.. how long are you going to be staying? Is your COMP friend from around the area? Worst case, I hate to watch you waste your money to stay at a motel.. when you could spend that money to buy me drinks! 😛 I move in June 1st.. ISAC doesn't start for awhile.. maybe you could bunk at my place for a few days in an emergency. Are you planning on renting a car while you're down here? Well, either e-mail me ([email protected]) with further details or find me on ICQ. There might be other local guys willing to help you out too.. who knows.

Are any of you people out there computer buffs? Just wondering... would be nice to know who keeps up with computer technology and all..

Melancholy
Thanks for the offer...I mught take you up on it. My future COMP roomate is from Oregon, and we were gonna stay with his friend, who is a current COMP student...so let me see what I can work out...but I may need ya for a day or two...if that is ok...and of course, the drinks will be on me...as I am writing this with a SPLITTING hangover...(SoCo and lime shots are my nemisis) I really appreciate the offer!!

About the laptop deal..we shoudl check out Dell too..and see what they will offer us. Gateway from what I hear uses crappy hardware and I would be hesitant to go that route...but lets look into Dell...

If we are gonna shell out some ca$h...might as well get a top o' the line system...No sense only crossing the street only half-way....

Lets see what we can work out....

I'm going back to bed....Uggghhhh

i'm gettin a top-of-line system from dell..namely a decked out inspiron 8000 😀 hopefully i'll have time to use it after first semester is over for a little fun n games.

have you guys sent in the fin. aid stuff? i'm kinda confused about some things...

prit

Okay,

Yosh mentioned he wanted a quote from Dell. As Prit said, he is going with the Inspiron 8000 series. I went with the exact same specifications as the Compaq (see above post), and the preliminary quote came out to $3030. I contacted a Dell representative and asked what discounts he can offer. I stated he will do some research and beat the price Compaq is offering as long as we have 10-15 buyers. That means he should be able lower the price to $2080 range. Vdub mentioned we should wait until July (just before classes) to purchase the laptop. The Dell representative also recommended to wait until that time because prices and promotions should change during that time. I would like to get a concensus on who is seriously interested in the group purchase and with what manufacturer. If we can agree with the specs on a specific laptop, we can save ourselves some decent cash. Post your opinions.

Hey RobbC,
how did those specs at Compaq turn out to be $3000? That's quite a lot for that setup.. even without considering any discounts. Whew. $2000 sounds like a much better deal... I'm wondering if we each can get slight adjustments in the configuration and still count as a group discount as long as we buy the same computer model though (i.e. Prit might just want the DVD-ROM, but you will want the DVD/CD-RW combo). I forgot I had an old college buddy who might still work for Dell in Austin so I will try and reach him to see if he has any advice for us. Since we don't need these laptops for awhile, July sounds like a good idea.. gives us more time to solidify what we want and who is really interested.

Have you guys seen the COMP thread on the Pre osteo forum.... thats comedy... but probably somewhat true and false....

come to think about it, has anyone who is doin sapp heard from them yet. HAs anyone paid. everytime i call they say they are sending letters out.. which is bull ****.. 😡 .

about the computers... i heard dell is not that good and that they recalled a whole bunch recently. 😱
im still favoring waiting, but who knows... we should look into other companies too like toshiba and sony especially.

oh and has anyone else found housing or understood how this financial aid thing works

seeya

geez! some of the people in that comp pre-ost room are sooo bitter. it really freaks me out. but i guess vdub is right about it being somewhat true AND false! i hope that won't be any of us next year!!!!

A different type of Question:

How does COMP plan to deal with the possibility of rolling blackouts and limited power during the peak summer hours in Aug, Sept, and Oct? This includes labs, refrigirated units, computer servers, etc...

Anyone current COMP'ers have any input?
😕

"labs, refrigirated units, computer servers, etc..."

who the hell cares about those, do u know how hot it will be there at that time, very hot,, they better have AC back ups. ..lol

hey everyone...

ok just a few things to mention. yeah i'm ignoring that comp thread in pre-osteo part. i posted a few times though. but hey...everyone has their own opinions about the situation. some have a harder time dealing with things. i'm going to make the best of my decision in choosing COMP and hopefully i can skip over whatever obstacles we encounter. in any case, i hope to have a great circle of friends that will provide the support necessary to have a great time in med school 😀

also, i too have been thinking about the power probs we are likely to face. once again there is not much we can do but hope the the school has made plans. we'll see what happens.

about the laptops...Robbc i don't really see how the quote came to $3000 from dell. was it a really tricked out inspiron 8000? actually the one i was considering did cost that much. but it had tons of extras. like the 15 inch ultra xga screen. also the 32mb nvidia graphics card (good for gaming 😀 the first of its kind). in addition, mine would come loaded w/win 2k and office xp professional. this was configured w/a 900mhz p3 and 128mb ram. oh and also a 32 gig hard drive! haha see what i meant by decked out?! and that came out to about 3100. so the compaq one should be in the low to mid 2000 range. i should also mention that amd just came out with the new athlon 4 mobile processor which is faster than the p3 at same clock speed YET it is cheaper. so when i get back from my trip late june...hopefully dell will have them available. compaq is the first to have the chips though. hmm what else...i think thats about it. oh and i'm not going to need the cdrw/dvd combo built in cuz i already have an external usb drive. maybe thats why the model you looked up was so expensive? (the combo drive by dell is about 400 more). so keep us posted on new developments and i think the ideal time to purchase a system would be late june/early july. nothing like competion from amd to drive intel prices down! i'm done w/researching laptops for a while...vacation time!

take care
prit

I am all for the "group" laptop purchase..lets get a bunch of people together and make this happen...We might as well unify as a class now..and get **** done!

Good lookin' out Rob!!!!!

Keep up the good work!

Hey Prit,
I think the $3000 laptop referred to the computer priced by Compaq when Rob gave them the specs.. so it's not the Dell computer that costs that much.

As far as rolling blackouts goes, I work for a clinical lab and our backup gas generators are pretty much used to keep the freezer/refrigeration units powered as specimen/reagent preservation is the top priority. I don't know of the situation in Pomona.. if they've had to deal with any blackouts at all.. and what steps Western U. has taken to help conserve energy.

Vdub- Did the admissions office promise to send acceptance letters earlier than the June 1st date for SAPP? If they already directly said they were mailing out acceptance letters, I'm not sure what the holdup might be. Did you try calling Dr. Leo (SAPP director) about it?

Oh yeah, as for those Dell recalls, you might or might not be thinking about the recall on some batteries that were put in Dell computers... this battery recall is not a new thing though. One recall went out last October for much older laptops that probably don't meet the minimum requirements for the laptop we need and the newest recall on May 3rd is for batteries in the Inspiron 5000 and 5000e. Supposedly the faulty batteries can cause some units to smoke and even catch fire. I think the main point is the batteries are at fault, not the computers... so hopefully we won't come up with that problem if we purchase any Dell laptops. It is a good idea to check out other brands like Toshiba and Sony though.. there are some winner laptops from those brands, but I'm not sure if we could get the same tech support and prices as we could get with Dell.

Smiles- Yeah, that COMP thread in the Pre-DO section does contain a lot of negative feedback about the school. Obviously, it all can't be false.. so I guess we all should keep aware of the problems mentioned and if anyone ends up feeling overwhelmed by something, try and help that person out if possible.

Hey everyone, I know I've been passive 🙁 , but July 16th (I'm planning to do SAPP) is coming fast and I do want to get to know everyone before I move down to Pomona. I'm going down there this weekend to look for a place to live, and then I'm gonna fly down again on the weekend of June 1st to finalize where I'm going to stay.

In regards to financial aid, I called the financial aid office last Friday, asking when the first check disbursements would be available...August 13th.hmm...school starts the week before that, right? I tried to verify it again today, but I just got a message machine... Anyways, I'm also in the process of applying for the Navy HPSP. I won't know until 2-3 weeks if I get in...Is anyone else doing the HPSP?

Melancholy , do you go by Lanny? My first name is Leni (pronounced Lenny), and I have a fraternal twin (Lani) 😀

Have a good week everyone - I'll be workin' like a slave, but thinking about the light at the end of the tunnel 🙂

Lemon

Lemon,
I too will be out there in Pomona the 1st week of June with my "new" roomate to find an apt too..and we are getting together with a bunch of COMP-ers...you are more than invited to come out with us..and get the 2005 class rolling....
E-mail me and we will discuss the plans..I too applied for SAPP too..no word yet..apparently we have plenty to talk about.

Melancholy
I sent you a private message to see if this works...did you get it? Let me know eh?
Thanks!!!

Hey Lemon,
Long time since we've heard from ya. 😛 Yeah, I go by "Lanny"... it's a long story, but it's my real first name.. not a nickname or a derivative of anything. If you want to know the story behind it, you can ask later.. heh. Leni and Lani? Actually, I get called and my name gets spelled all sorts of names by strangers.. Lenny, Leny, Lani, Lannie, Leni.. you get the picture. If they get close enough and call me Lenny I am usually ok with that for the time being.

Is your boyfriend also coming down to check out apartments or are you going to look for the both of you? Need any help looking around while you're down here.. I will probably be free Saturday morning to late afternoon. Well, give me a holler if you need any info.

As far as HPSP, I thought there were other COMP'ers who accepted that scholarship.. might want to search this thread for it. Someone also started a "Navy-HPSP-Open Discussion" Thread recently in the Osteopathic forums.

Yosh- Hey John.. private message (PM) DOES work.. cool. I replied back.. read it and let me know what you think. I'll get in contact with you however in the next day or two, okay?

I'm doing the army hpsp and there are one or two other people who mentioned air force(Lisa B?) and navy(TNT).

Melancholy,
I got the message...and it does work..thanks....and thanks again!!

Where the hell is everyone?

Hey what's going on out there? A fellow COMPER is having trouble getting his password...and is feeling quite left out. He is reading the posts religiously...and is anxiously awaiting his debut on the board. If anyone knows how he can get his password..please drop me a line. He regisitered...but never got any password.

Thanks...
--John

Hey John,
I saw in the general forums that they wanted to put up a tech support forum because it seems like there are quite a few other people having trouble getting their passwords as well. Your friend might have to wait it out a little bit until this gets fixed. Are we talking about your future roommate?

Melancholy
Wow, I feel you with the name discrimination 😉 Now I gotta hear the story about the origin of Lanny...

Actually, my boyfriend, dad, and possibly brother are going down to Pomona this weekend. We are going to have a realtor take us around to different places, but thanks for looking out! I'll keep ya'll posted on how it goes. It will just be my boyfriend and I on June 1st.

I told my supervisor today that I'm leaving work to go to med school - that took a big load off my shoulders 😀 The idea of finally starting med school is starting to sink in...

Also, I called financial aid again...they clarified that the checks for the first semester will actually be available on Friday, August 10, and we start school on Monday, August 13th. If you haven't already, make sure that the financial aid office has your file straight because when I called, my file was on hold because I was still considered to be on the alternate list 😡 oh well, it's fixed now.

Hey nullpyoj, Lisa B, and TNT,
are you doing your indoctrination camp this summer? If I'm accepted, I have no choice - I'll have to do it another summer...

Is anyone going on vacation before school starts?

I know I'm rambling...good night.

Lemon-I start OBC in Fort Sam Houston (San Antonio) next summer. I had the choice to do it this summer but I declined because of work and my cross country move, etc.

yosh-i'll be on Long Island on Memorial day weekend. i'll give you a ring when i'm down there.

Going to Cancun for July 4 with the family!

Peace!

Hello everyone,
I just finished reading the last few pages of posts and realized I should get in on the action! The last time I checked the board was January, so I'm a little behind!

I'm currently living in Corona (about 30 minutes from the school) and would love to get together with those of you meeting in June. Please post the details or send me a private message.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you!

UGH, I didn't realize how expensive it would be to move. I'll be travelling around 400 miles and the cheapest moving truck I can find is $250 from U-HAUL. Is that really a good deal? Maybe I should just leave some stuff behind. I thought of taking down a free fridge (from my sister) but it may even be more expensive to transport it. Anyway, thanks for listening. I just needed to vent a little...

So, I'm not sure if I can wait to buy the group laptop thing. I'll be starting in the summer and I won't be bringing down my desktop. Although I may not need the laptop for the program (is that true, first-years?) I think I'll be out of touch with the world without a computer. The one I'm looking at is a Sony VAIO FX120. It has everything we need: Pentium III, 700mHz, 64MB, 10GB, 56K, ethernet card, DVD/CD, 13.3" monitor, 6.6lbs. I saw one at Fry's electronics for $1499.99. All I'll need is the software. Do you think that's a good deal?

can any first or second year students , comment how much we will need our laptops in the begining. i mean will all the classes be based on powerpoint or is there any old fashion whitebord and marker teaching, or slides... i hope there is.. so if any one knows, any info would help...

Hey everybody! I have some important information for those purchasing a laptop for our DO class of 2005. I spoke to someone in financial aid who told me that the award letters don't include the cost of a laptop. To request additional funds to help pay for the laptop, you must submit a receipt, and then request the additional budgeted expense. This is done after the 1st official day of school. The laptops also are required to be purchased on or AFTER June 1, 2001 in order to qualify. I received the specs and went ahead and ordered a laptop(thinking I was doing good to stay on top of things and get ready for school). I received it a couple days ago and since I received it before June 1, I may not be able to list it as a required expense for my school budget and will be unable to get additional loan funds to pay for it. Financial aid is investigating my problem further, but for those of you looking to buy a laptop, you might want to wait 'till after June 1, 2001, so you won't have to go through what I fear I will. Good Luck! 🙁

Hey Gemini,
If you are willing to try alternatives that are probably cheaper and better than U-Haul, check out the following page:
http://www.epinions.com/hmgd-Moving_Services-All.

The reviews for Penske Truck Rental look very promising. I checked the website and Penske has locations around SF and in Chino, so it won't be a far drive for you. Also, I believe Penske has unlimited mileage, the trucks are in better condition, and it seems like the overall pricing is better. If you have AAA, you can get a discount as well. (See: http://www.aaa.com/aaa/238/reed/showret.html) I didn't get a chance to look at any other companies, but try to stay away from U-Haul unless it is a last resort. Penske might also match competitors' prices, so check with them first.

About the Sony VAIO, I don't know how to compare the quality of the VAIO vs. a Dell Inspiron, but if you wanted to compare prices, try putting that same tech. configuration into a Dell laptop on their online site and see what price you get. The only thing you would want is 128 megs of ram (instead of 64 megs), but you can purchase that online separately for probably $30-$40 dollars and install it yourself with a little help.

Hope this helps.

(On a side note: Prit, if you read this, watch out for the notorious Monkey Man!)

Is everyone asleep.. or just busy? 🙂

Just wanted to let people know I have also used www.half.com (along with a $5 coupon) to order three anatomy books and I have had satisfactory experiences with the results. I saved somewhere between 50-70% off on some of these books.. there were some selling for cheaper, but I wanted the ones in nicer condition. Most of my items came within the expected arrival date and were in close to new condition. I suppose that "anal" behavior that some students might have also extends to the condition of their textbooks.. heh. 😀

Anyway, it seems like they wanted certain editions for the anatomy dissector/text book and not necessarily the newest ones. Would a probable reason be the fact that some newer editions might have mistakes that need to be updated?

hey all!
greetings from singapore..another 8 hrs b4 we head to india. anyways not much to say. i'd get 128 mb ram and not 64. thats about it...
