Thanks Cheshyre for the detailed inputs about WesternU. It is also my favorite school since I'm from Southern California (but I go to school in Norcal and can't wait to move back to my sunny Socal). I submitted my secondary since mid-August and still have not gotten any invite yet =( I wonder if they'll have any interview date in December?? Arrgghhh...I'm so nervous!!!

Thank you! I'm too excited to fall asleep!!! Hahaha I'm just laying in bed watching Scrubs, hoping I'll fall asleep soon.

Let us know what you think about Western! I'm still trying to decide if I should go to my interview 😕

And good choice for entertainment. I love scrubs!

I just got out of my interview, so I'll write more later tonight, but the school is awesome 😀

I'm up at work all night, so please post it I need something to read!

I guess I'll just start with a review of the day.

Although we were told to get there at 8:15, the day started around 8:45 with Dr. Adams, the dean, coming in to speak with us about the school, history, etc. Everyone introduced themselves to the dean and other interviewing students by stating their name, where they're from, and what college they attended. Of all the interviewees, I would say 90% were from CA. Of those 90%, I would say another 90% were UC grads, with the majority from UCI, followed by UCSD, UCLA, UCSC, UCD, and then Cal.

After Dr. Adams' intro, we were given presentations on admissions, student affairs, financial aid, and the curriculum by various faculty members and administration staff. At around 10:30 we were split into two groups, and went on the campus tour for about a hour. We were able to check out some classes, including an anatomy lab where we saw some guy just walking around with a human brain in his hand like it was nothing

At around 11:30, we were given an OMM demonstration by Dr. Redding that was pretty interesting. We went back to where we met in the morning to get our lunch, which was made up of a sandwich, chips, cookie, and water. We were then further broken up into smaller groups of three or four to have lunch with an assigned COMP student. Lunch lasted until 1:00, and interviews began at 1:30.

When you first get to WesternU in the morning, you're given an information booklet. Inside that booklet is a piece of paper indicating what time your interview is at. If your interview isn't until later in the day, you're free to do whatever you wish. All they ask is that you come back 15 minutes prior to the interivew.

The interview is really low stress. The faculty know that this can be a pretty stressful experience for some people, so they try their best to make the interview seem like a normal conversation. I was interviewed by two faculty members; one of them had read my file and the other had not. They asked basic questions, such as "why medicine?", "why DO?", "why WesternU", "tell me about *blank* experience you've had", etc. The only question that tripped me up was when I was asked about my GPA, and why I think I can handle the rigors of medical school. I had an answer, but she kept prodding me for more, but I can't really blame her. The interview was about 30 minutes long, but we all know that time flies. Afterward, you're free to leave or sit in on another class.

As for why I think Western U is amazing, I was a bit biased before coming into the interview today. I spent a few months at one of their medical centers earlier this year, and I was amazed at how awesome the faculty at Western U are. Every single faculty member I've met has been welcoming, informative, and available for anything. The COMP students I met were all happy with their choice, and recommended the school to me. Those experiences really made me want to attend COMP.

Another plus was how the faculty and staff did not try to "sell" the school to us. They wanted all of us to be sure that this is where we want to be, which was nice. Besides the faculty, I really like COMP's curriculum. It's broken up into three "phases", with the first phase having distinct classes such as Anatomy, but this only lasts for the first semester. The next 1 & 1/2 years makes up phase two, which is systems based. During second year, they begin having "small groups", where students meet to solve out problems (like PBL?). Phase three is the clinical years. Western U is a pretty established school, so their rotations list is solid. Nothing more to say about that. If you're not from the area, you may not like how a car is required in socal. Public transportation sucks, and you will need a car to get to your rotations.

When it comes to board scores, we were told they're in the top quartile in terms of score when it comes to COMLEX Level 1. Western U is also #1 in COMLEX Level 2 PE scores, apparently due to the early clinical experience and interaction with hired patient actors. Another plus for me is that COMP is located in CA. This may not matter for some of you, but I've been in CA since I was a child, and I want to practice medicine here. So it just makes sense for me to attend a medical school in CA. Being in socal also gives COMP students a lot of opportunities, such as research, or clinical rotations at some of the best hospitals in the world. Another awesome thing about being in Pomona/socal is that when you get some downtime, you're ~45 minutes from the beach, ~45 minutes from downtown LA, really close to the mountains, minutes away from great Asian food in Rowland Heights, etc. Basically, anything you could ever want is here.

Sure the campus isn't as nice as other schools, the area surrounding the campus isn't the greatest, and the cost of attendance/living is high (living costs are actually cheaper for some of us. Apparently a 1 bedroom apartment next to campus can be had for $750, which is unheard of in Orange/LA county), but it's totally worth it in my opinion. The great faculty, awesome curriculum, good rotations, and unlimited opportunities easily makes it my first choice.

I'm sure I missed a lot of stuff, so feel free to ask me any questions.

edit: The ISAC and SMSPP programs seem like pretty cool additions. I would seriously consider ISAC if I get accepted :xf:

Most students almost exclusively spend their time in the new building (the HEC). There's tons of break-out rooms, study lounges, nice big, modern lecture halls, lockers for the students, and the little cafe that sells snacks, coffee, sandwiches, etc. The only time we really leave the HEC is for either OMM, anatomy lab, or the clinical skills lab ... or if we need to visit the bookstore or library or some other building. So sure the campus isn't amazing overall, but the place where you'll spend the majority of your time is actually very nice.

Definitely, the HEC is awesome

edit: From what I saw, the PCC is pretty nice too

Hey all! I interviewed at Western on Oct. 7th....& everyone said it...it's really a relaxed day and interview....definitely went by fast....I spoke with an admissions counselor & once you get interviewed, there is about a 70% chance of getting in...but she did also say that many more people are applying this year than other years so it might be a little different...My interviewer was really nice & asked basic questions...why doctor? strengths/weaknesses? etc....I rambled a little so that worries me, but we'll see!

I had a question for those that rescheduled other interviews....I have two interviews WVSOM on OCt. 15th & LECOm Oct.22.....& I'd really like to reschedule & wait til I hear Western's decision....

Is it easy to reschedule, or do I have to come up with a good excuse? & if so, what's a good one? Thanks!

Interview invite!!!

They woke me up with my phone vibrating at 10:30 after a 12 hr night shift at the hospital and I let it go to voicemail. Then I had a feeling like "what if that was Western giving me an invite". Then I checked the number and saw it was actually a 909 number, checked my VM and there it was! Called, scheduled and went back to sleep till 3pm hahaha

Back to work in a few hours for another night shift.

I have been "complete ready for review" since 9/27 (would have been earlier if would have sent the letters to the Ostepathic and not the podiatric programs :scared: Anyway -When were you complete and what are your stats if you don't mind posting?

Interview invite yesterday via phone call in the AM. Unexpected because I thought Western had written me off. See you guys 11/4! I was complete around Mid-August.

For anyone who is an undergrad at UCSD, Western is coming to the campus today to recruit. It is at 4pm in Student Center B, right next to the HMP3 offices. I am heading over there to see their presentation!

Stats are in the underdog thread in the main forum. I was complete in mid July so you weren't complete until over 2 months after me. They take their time, thats for damn sure. I'm sure it will be worth the wait though.

Damn... interviewed on Sept 23 and still no word. Has any1 who interviewed that same day hear anything yet?

hmm...i was completed there early august, and i havn't heard anything from them yet..should i be worried?

i applied to both campus on my primary app, but i only turned in a seconday app for the ponoma campus, will this affect anything?

yea, but sloh called in and asked them. I'm just wondering if any1 else has herd anything through the standard mail notice.

Interview invite today at 3pm! be sure you pick up area code 909 phone call~

joleo i haven't heard anything yet either and i interviewed with you on sept 23. and it's now been over 3 weeks.

Since I had upcoming interviews, I called and was able to get the decision over the phone. I was accepted 😍. However, they did say that letters were going out next week. Good luck, everyone! :luck: btw, I interviewed 9/23.

Congrats! 👍

Did they say what day next week?

No, she didn't say what day or anything particularly specific as to when next week, just next week.

Interesting that it has taken this long to get back to everyone. From their website:

Question 12: When are acceptance letters and final notification letters mailed?
Acceptance letters are mailed no more than two weeks following your interview. Alternates are selected from the list of alternate candidates after the class is filled in April. All applicants will be notified of their final status in August.

Breaking their own FAQs

Last year, I heard that they had an issue with overadmitting (led to some problems the year before that so they were being cautious) so they basically didn't let anyone in from Jan. - Apr. until after the final interview.

Well that would suck. Luckily my interview is next Saturday 😉

Nice. Best of luck - maybe I'll see you there, hah. We (DO2014) have an exam on Monday so there will probably be a ton of people studying at school.

I have a friend in your class. 👍 Its going to be interesting trying to decide between Western and AZCOM if I get in. We shall see. Gotta focus on getting in first.

For those of you that have been accepted, did your application status in BanWeb change?

I've been obsessively checking it since last week

I just got a call from Western for an interview, I was wondering what the turnaround time from interview to decision has been. I have 2 more interviews in the 2 weeks after Western. I might delay them in order to hear from western first. Thanks for any replies! And good luck on the decision Sin

Going off of what we were told during the interview and the 2009-2010 COMP thread, two weeks should be the turnaround time. But it has taken longer than two weeks for those that interviewed on 9/23 this year, so they may be a little busy with other things. I'll be sure to post in this thread if I hear anything this week.

As for your other interviews, I think you shouldn't postpone them. The ADCOM meet on the Wednesday following the interview, so what you can do is give WesternU a call and let them know you have other interviews coming up that you would cancel if they were to give you an acceptance. It seemed to work for Sloh and EBAMom.

Thanks, and best of luck on your interview 👍

OMG got the call from Robin at 5:30pm! Interviewing on Oct 30th... so excited! I thought WesternU had written me off.

see you guys next Saturday!

Why do they interview people on a Sat?? Anyway, I'm excited/anxious about the interview! See you all there!! Should we get a confirmation email about this? Cause as of right now, I still don't know what time my interview is!! @_@

Also, do you know if they have ever rescheduled the interviews? I live in Norcal and I wonder if I should book my flight now or wait until I get the confirmation email???

this is random, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't make a difference, but I figured I'd ask anyways, does anyone know if having an acceptance and calling a school would help as far as them reviewing your application quicker? I know it does if you have had an interview and just waiting for the results through snail mail.

I think it wouldn't matter, considering by the time they schedule you an interview and you attend it, the acceptance deposit would have most likely already been due.

When were you complete??

I submitted my primary late June
received the secondary early July
completed and submitted early Aug (I retook the MCAT on Aug 5th and didn't get around to it until after the MCAT)
emailed Robin to put my file on hold pending my new MCAT score (released Sept 7th)
I emailed Robin with an update around mid-Sept
Robin calls for interview invite- 10/19

I'm not exactly sure when I was "complete"...

yeah, my thoughts exactly, figured I'd post the question reconfirm, thnx

Interview Invite for October 30th!!

Does anyone know any more information on housing, more specifically with clinical rotations years 3-4? I was just wondering if people ended up changing apartments, etc. or if it's possible to stay around the same area. Any currrent students or applicants that have any insight would be greatly appreciated! 🙂
