I saw that Western's system is not compatible with Apple products!!! 🙁 😡
I just bought my Mac this past year and I REALLLY don't want to shell out more money to buy a new laptop but can current students chime in on this...I know it is just a "recommendation" that we get a windows laptop but is it really impossible to get by with a Mac? Thanks in advance!

I cant comment on whether or not you'll get by.

However, software such as Parallels Desktop or VMware, give you the option of running windows on a mac osx platform. Maybe in the worst case scenario its something you can look into?

This is one of the many ******ed things about WesternU. They basically lie and tell you that you need a PC, when really their lazy IT department doesn't want to deal with Macs. If you want my advice, STAY AWAY from WesternU. Their curriculum is a mess and the professors are mean and purposely try to fail students. I suggest reapplying and trying to get into SCCO, I wish I would have done that 🙁

janedoe88 I tried private messaging you but it did not allow me to...your post makes me really nervous about going to western. Are you considering transferring? And do you know anything about the school getting accredited or anything about how the board exams went for the students that are graduating this year?

Look, I'm not trying to persuade anyone to going to a specific school, in fact, I think anyone on this board with a 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 4.0 that's going into Optometry over Medical school is in IDIOT! There are NO job openings in Optometry.

Western University of Sciences is a sh*thole of a school, please consider going ANYWHERE else! I'm even jealous of my friends in Puerto Rico that are enjoying their classes. Instead of having a normal schedule where you take 3-4 classes, you will be having one class at a time for 3-4 weeks. Image trying to learn everything in an entire semester class in 3 weeks. Every week of your life will have a midterm or a final. If you get below a 70% on any exam you FAIL the ENTIRE class, even if you get 100% A+ on the lab part. My friends that chose WesternU over other ACCREDITED schools realize their mistake. This is the last post I will state on the subject, you have been warned.

Hi, I'm a first year at WesternU and many of my classmates use Macs. The reason why the school recommends a PC is because the M&S software that is downloaded on your laptop at the beginning of the year is required for vision screenings (part of fall curriculum) and many of our labs. The people with Macs just bought a really cheap PC for this purpose & use their Macs for everything else. I myself have a PC so there may be other ways to get around this that I don't know about (you can private message me if you really want me to try to find a classmate who got away with not getting a PC).

For the record, I am LOVING my experience here at WUCO. The professors are incredibly supportive and always willing to help, by e-mail or in person. I love my classmates and everything "janedoe88" has written in response to your post is an exaggeration or a lie. For one, I can't think of a single mean professor!! Our professors are our STRENGTH! They do EVERYTHING in their power to help you not just pass a class, but really learn the material. That one comment "janedoe88" made about professors "purposely" trying to fail students is the biggest lie. Also, our IT department is so nice and fixes any problem with your laptop (although yes, only on PCs). Of course because we're a new program, the curriculum is still being changed, but it improves every year and should be quite settled by next year. Only a few classes are three weeks long, and all the material you learn is a foundation for future courses, so it's not like you would take the three-week course and never use the material again. I personally enjoy the asynchronous schedule and have succeeded in it, as it really helps keep school from feeling repetitive and not having a true finals week is lovely. We do not have a midterm/final every week, but we definitely must study a lot; what else would you expect being in optometry school? There are a few classes where you have to get at least 70% on every exam to pass the entire class, but why should the standard be any lower? We're going to have DOCTOR in our title, and I would like to think being BETTER than average at ALL times is important. I am also confident that WesternU will be accredited by early summer (earliest possible time for a new school).

I am excited that you are coming to WesternU, and I hope you chose it because you truly wanted to come here (apparently unlike "janedoe88")! Every person is different, but I know I belonged at WesternU and am thankful I chose it. Work hard and you'll have a great experience!!

I talked to Western U about this and ROXY23 is correct. I personally own a Macbook Pro and I run a program called "Parallels". This program allows you to run your MAC OS and have an easy separate icon for Windows 7, its easy to use I love it. If your not good with technology, the IT department are extremely helpful and they know there stuff.

Also, congrats to all 2017'ers.

Cheers!

PSA: How to Beat a Troll Senseless
Public Service Announcement: This was originally posted in the PreMed forum. Given the rise of trolling in the Optometry forum, it seems necessary to remind members about the best ways to deal with trolls.

Quoted from EvoDevo's original PSA:
Quote:
It's Prime Trolling Season (tm). In that spirit, I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that....

Trolls do it for the attention. If they don't get attention they get really, really annoyed. It's probably because they were ignored as children, have small genitalia, have a face that not even a dog could love, or some such combination of the above.

We're working on dealing with this issue. In the meantime, you guys have a fantastic way to help yourselves deal with assclowns such as this guy. It's called the ignore button. To wit:

o Find the user that you don't want to hear from, and click on the user's name.
o click on Add User X to your Ignore List
o Reload the page you were originally viewing
o Voila! No more assclown. (It's as if their posts never existed)

Remember, as tempting as it is to get all inflamed with guys like this....you hurt them worse by annoying them. Hope this helps.
Also, the report post button is your friend.

Trolls are considered "problematic".

Reported posts are viewed for consideration, whereas in-thread complaints may be overlooked. Do not use the Report button for frivolous complaining, but if you feel strongly justified in your belief that a poster is TROLLING, please alert the Moderators by reporting.

Thanks for your cooperation!
