I am an out of state student, and so, I am obviously clueless when it comes to housing in the area! I am sure I am not the only new student wondering "where am I going to live?" 😉

So I thought we should start a forum to get our questions answered by our future peers!

Here are my questions:

(1) Is student housing worth it (ex. the Helix)?

(2) Is Pomona a safe area to live? What parts of Pomona would you recommend?

(3) Where do most students choose to live?

(4) What other areas around/outside Pomona would you suggest to look for an apartment?

(5) What do you think about living alone vs. finding a vet student roommate?

(6) What about commuting to campus? Is it difficult? Public Transportation vs. personal transportation?

Thanks!

Here are my questions:

(1) Is student housing worth it (ex. the Helix)?

Yes and no..... It depends what you are looking for in housing. It is one of the most expensive places to live. There are other housing associations just behind the helix that are now allowing students to rent. They are suppose to be running a pretty good deal...and they would include all utilities except for something. But.... it is Pomona and the back side of campus isn't very nice. There are other towns around Pomona that are more appealing... but again do you want to walk to campus or drive five to ten minutes? All depends in what you are looking for.

(2) Is Pomona a safe area to live? What parts of Pomona would you recommend?

Depends on what area of Pomona you are in. There has been one or two incidents on or directly around campus. The areas right around the school I find to be ok. I would still not walk around after dark...even if I was in a group of people. I always carry some sort of protection. Some people choose mase (I keep it on my key chain at all times just in case), and some of my close friends carry taser guns. The best thing I can say is try to check out what area of Pomona you are looking into. If you get on the wrong street it could turn out badley. However, there are some good places in Pomona to live. Like I said you should really try and come out to check around. I was an out of state student and I had a friend check around for me.

(3) Where do most students choose to live?

Students are spread out among a different areas...so I can't really say where most students stay.

(4) What other areas around/outside Pomona would you suggest to look for an apartment?

Claremont, Montclair, La Verne, Rancho, Upland, and West Covina (there are other places as well... but I just can't think right now)

(5) What do you think about living alone vs. finding a vet student roommate?

I was told way back when I was looking to find housing and such that I shouldn't live with another vet student because of dealing with the stress of your first year, the different type of program, and having to spend so much time together, as well as adjusting to a new location. I must say that I live with two other first year students and we have had some rockey areas...but we are still all friends and it would be the same type of problems that you would run into with any roommate. We have not been in the same PBL group so it may be different if we do get put intot he same group. Living alone is ok... there are several students that prefer to do that but the cost of living in SoCal is so high that you really need to budget in any situation. It is nice being able to split rent and such.

(6) What about commuting to campus? Is it difficult? Public Transportation vs. personal transportation?

Ok.... YOU DO NOT WANT TO COMMUTE MORE THAN 20 MIN!!!! Commuting takes away from your study time and students tend to do poorly. There are a couple of people in my class that are commuting about an hour each way and they have a difficult time getting to rotations on time due to traffic, and not wanting to stay on campus to late because of the drive home and such..... JUST DON"T DO IT!!!
The commute to campus is not hard...but can be annoying if there is bumper to bumper traffic... you must be aware this is SoCal and at any time the highway can look like a parking lot...it is not an excuse to be late to any rotation or PBL session etc. If you are not use to driving in a lot of traffic then you may have more trouble and find it difficult to drive in SoCal.
Most students use personal transportation. I do not have my car out here.... so I use public transportation on occassion. I do get rides with my roommates and other classmates etc. I have not had a problem with the transportation. The only complaint I have is it is not very reliable for pick up times.... the bus could be running late or early. You will hear bad things about the public transportation but the people who say those things have never taken the bus before... so don't take everyone's word until you have talked to someone that has actually stepped foot onto the bus. That is what happened to me. Other students live close enough to campus and bike back and forth to the campus. They have not had a problem with this and it is good excercise!

Thanks!

I am happy to answer any questions! If I don't know an answer I will do my best to get one for you! Congradulations on acceptance!

Thanks for starting this thread! My boyfriend, me and our 110 rescue ridgeback will be making the drive cross country to school!

Because his best chance of finding a job will be around LA or Manhatten beach is there a happy medium anyone can reccomend us looking into? What's the absolute furthest in that direction would you go?

And oh yeah...where can we get Western apparel!? 🙂

I have been doing some research, at the interview I asked one of the students where they live and she told me, Upland, La Vern, and Claremont.

I am worried because I have a large dog... If anyone finds a place to rent with no weight restrictions please let me know.

I too will make the across country trip, (with my dog and cat of course)

Thanks for starting the thread🙂

Great thread! Thanks for starting it 👍
Finding a place to live can be quite troublesome.

I'll be traveling coast to coast at the end of May (when my lease is up) so anyone else up for the journey, let me know! lol, well thanks for starting the thread....I looked into the Helix and last year they were offering 1 bedrms for ~$1350. Super nice inside w/ stainless steel appliances and cute bathrooms but....It's expensive! So I'll prob try to find something in $600 (still debating on the roommate thing) and w/in biking distance. I'm originally from Cali (san diego!) and I hated the traffic. Seriously, it can be bad, so try to find housing that will keep you going against traffic, if that makes any sense. 🙂

I lived in Rancho Cucamonga at the Terra Vista Apartments - they allowed dogs with no weight limit in their 3 BR apartments. At the time it was the older of the Lewis Properties so that's why they allowed dogs. Rancho is right near Victoria Gardens which is an outdoor mall. Everything you need to be entertained. I'd recommend it. Pasadena is also a decent place. Claremont is closest to school but also more expensive.

Here's their site:

thanks everyone for posting recommendations on where to live....

can you please include travel time via car and also consider time stuck in traffic from each of these locations?

thanks!

Im still a little confused. Can someone spell out for me what would be a good medium between LA/Manhatten beach and school? I dont do well with maps 🙂 thanks!

... wish we can all sit down and map out these routes in detail - pros/cons, cost, traffic time, pets/no pets, safety of area...sorta like a pseudo PBL session 😀

Midway between Manhattan Beach and Pomona is Buena Park (by Knott's Berry Farm).

There are tons of jobs closer to Pomona though as even the commute (time wise) is far between Buena Park and Pomona, as is Buena park to MB.

What exactely you mean by "LA" I do not know. LA is frickin HUGE so you have to be way more specific for that (Pomona and Manhattan Beach are both cities in LA County, even though they are about 40 miles from eachother for instance.)

There are a lot of places around that rent specifically to the Western students so they are very receptive to dogs of all sizes.... however you want to make sure they know you are a vet med student when talking about pets..... Western apparel can be purchased on the web site through the book store.... there selection online isn't as good as in the actual book store.

As far as commute times from different locations...I would not try and commute past 20 minutes but that is my preference... 40 minutes could also be ok but I feel it would be pushing it.

I will do my best to estimate time but it is just a best guess...traffic is very unpredictable so I am not even going to try the with traffic times....

Claremont 10 min
Montclair 15 min
Ontario 20 min
Upland 20-25min
Rancho 25-30
LaVerne 20-25 min
Chino 30-50 min (depending on which part)
Long Beach 60-80 min
West Covina 30 min
Pomona 5-10 min depending on which part may be longer

I have been told by some professors that you should allow up to 40minutes extra commute time to different locations due to traffic.

I forgot to mention that there is a housing web page that is set up to help find room mates and different renting possibilites. Most of them have cost to rent, what is included, and commute times. It is a good resource and it is how I found my place in Claremont.

mdnghtdnc thank you that was very helpful! I take it all the places you listed are more towards the Manhatten Beach area? In that case, would I be going against traffic every day? Or its completely unpredictable?

Also, would you say you do what you need to do at school and go home or is there sometimes a lot of back and forth to school? I am a home-body to study (no libraries for this girl) but I fear having to go back to school for group meetings or dissections etc. ?

Ha Ha! Very funny Robezzy08.

What's in Manhattan Beach job-wise that makes it so imperative you live there?

Glendora 20 min
Diamond Bar 10 min

The areas I listed surround Pomona in no such order. If you bring up a map on google or such you can see where in relation they are.
It is suggested that you study within a study group! It is very helpful and it is what the program is about...however I like to study at home as well. I actually study by myself through the week and meet with a study partner when needed. It works for me but it does not work for everyone. There is still a lot of back and forth to the school. You have scheduled rotations, thing labs, and anatomy lab which will keep you commuting. ANATOMY lab is a must... you need to spend as much time in the anatomy lab as possible which means extra trips to campus on weekends. Most of the activities are scheduled between the hours of 8 and 5 but extra time for study groups etc are scheduled whenever. I just stay on campus until everything I need to do is done then I go home to study.... this sometimes leaves several hours a day that I need to study at school, or run home and then come back.... hope this info helps... and I highly suggest finding an area as close to the school as possible. The facilitators and even the Dean of the college says it is not wise to commute from a far distance.

Can anyone give me some recommendations of apartment complexes that are close by, beside The Helix.

Since I will be moving by myself I would like it to be safe, clean, quite, and of course close to campus.

Also, I am not sure if I will have a car. Is the weather nice enough to ride a Vespa or bike year round?

Thanks,

Karlee 😀

If anyone is into the whole "live in a trailer" thing like some students do at other schools Frank G. Bonelli Park's East Shore RV offers long term spots and is like 750 a month for everything. Oh and they are located in La Verne off of Fairplex which is about 3 exits away from Western. So that could get rid of the pet issue and isn't a long commute. They have a convenience store on site, a guard to get in, and on site laundry too.

I'm planning to apply to Western this fall... not going to change my mind... but this thread freaks me out a little bit. I hate the traffic in Dallas and Houston, so I'm pretty sure LA/Pomona would be torture... and you have to carry mace or a gun? :scared:

Here's another question that has crossed my mind: say you drive a nice car... are there safe places to park around the school and around where you live?

Don't get freaked out...It's not a gun they are carrying it is a stun gun (teaser gun)... guns themselves I do not believe are able to be on campus. I feel perfectly safe being at Western.. however I do cary Mace just incase... its not worth risking it. Western has very good security officers that will walk you to your car or to the Helix. I live in Claremont and feel very safe. I leave the door open to catch the breeze etc. It is fairly nice out but during the winter months their is a lot of rain, and can drop to 40's. Parking will occur in the new parking garage that will be done by the time next years class arrives for orientation or at least that is what we are told. Any way there is parking lots all around campus that are watched by security. Parking in housing complexes usually have parking that is secure but it depends on the place...some people have to park on the street.

The best place to look for housing is on the housing website that is set up by western... they have a list of places that are available or will be available and tell you what is included as far as parking etc.

Pomona is not a place to walk around by yourself after dark, that is for sure and no one is hiding that fact.... so it is something to consider. I feel safe and I am originally a really small town where everybody knows everybody.

OOPS I guess I should have left my gat at home:meanie:

Totally kidding....carrying a gun without a CCW in California is illegal, nevermind the University Rules.

Haha. I'm sure that's how it is in most states, even here in "the south"... lol.

I guess it's fair enough to say that big cities scare me, but I'm sure it's just something that one has to get used to.

im moving out of my house in July. I live in Chino Hills....probably 20 min away from Western.

The landloard basically left us alone and we told him our dogs were outside.... he lives in michigan...so he'd never know, you know?

anyway, it's a 4 bed/ 3 bath. one of the bedrooms and bathrooms is downstairs. it's on a 10,000 sq ft lot....pretty spacious backyard.

the neighbors are nice and quiet. 2 car garage with RV parking on the side of the house.

the house is a little over 1800 sqft. the master is huge with a walk in closet. it's a 2 story house.

anyway! it was $2250/month with a depost of 2250 plust first months rent. he wants a cashiers check sent to him. AND, i think we paid a pet deposit....i forget how much...maybe $1,000.

safe neighborhood with lots of shops nearby. PM me if you're interested. I can see if he would want me to find a tenant. 🙂

oh, and i found this house 3 years ago when i was looking to rent on remax.com

That place sounds really nice. It's just so painful... my mortgage is just under $800 a month... how can everything cost so much? ARGH!

Apparently I might have some issues to sort out with the location, haha. Oh well, not going to worry about it right now!

So how soon do you think I should start apartment hunting? I wasn't planning on taking a apartment hunting trip to CA until the beginning of July. Is that too late?😱

I think that's a perfectly fine time to go looking. The fortunate thing is that even though there is a large college consortium nearby (The Claremont Colleges), most of those kids live on campus so you're not competing with them for apartments/houses off-campus.

The problem I ran into with waiting was that a lot of the places are rented for an entire year...not just a school term. The other problem was that a lot of the good places go quick. There were a couple of places I was looking at that were posted on the bandweb site one day and the next day they were taken. So the sooner you can do it the better...just one less thing you need to worry about. After all you will need to focus on the move too.

So I have been looking around a lot for housing and have been looking in the surrounding areas, I keep running into the same problems....... Cost and size restrictions on dogs!!!

Most of the places I have found are from $1000-1300 for a 1 bedroom!!!
And most of these places allow dogs but have silly restrictions like less that 20 or 30 lbs. I have a 65 lb dog and think this is going to cost me a lot of money.

I just wanted to see if people are seeing these same prices and if not if you can direct me to a place I can live with a big dog.

I am also relocating from Chicago so I do not have a clear idea of how much apartments really cost. Thanks

Hi Sbrook,

Woweee, if 65 lbs is large, what will I do with my 105 pounder!? Haha j/k - kinda. I have def run into this problem before and somehow it gets figured out. We are looking too but havent found anything too great yet. Are you going to take a trip out there? I am in Washington DC so we might take a trip out sometime next month but not sure. I will certainly keep you updated!

LLIPPY, i think anything over 30 lbs is crazy BIG

I am not going to be able to travel out to Cali until I move in, but my mom and sister live in San Diego so they are going to look at places for me. I will also keep everyone updated on anything I find.

Good Luck Hunting:luck:

it looks like their rules have changed a bit, but whatever place you find, you can try contacting them and telling them your situation. (they were going to let me rent 2 yrs ago with 3 dogs...a german shep mix and 2 maltese....but it was for their houses not apartments)

also, with private rentals, some people will be more lenient if you say that the dog will be outdoors (but just say it...dont do it, i know it's lying....but if you gotta do it...do it) they might let you have the dog. just make sure the owner doesnt come to check up on you. lol. the past 2 landlords i have have lived out of state.

also, you're on this site!!! find someone to room with. 🙂

good luck!!

I don't recomend lying to a landlord....especially since Cali is a very legal state.....meaning they have really stupid laws and regulations and if you get caught by the landlord you could be out of luck...loosing housing deposit, a place to live, etc....

Keep checking the site for housing on the Western website.... the landlords are more willing to allow large dogs when you let them know you are a vet student...but be prepared any pet you have no matter the size will cost you extra in a security deposit... and 1300 for a single bedroom is one of the better prices. I have two roommates to help split the cost of everything. We have a three bedroom with three private bathrooms and pay 1950.00 and that only includes water and garbage. California is not cheap... that goes for groceries, and other things. It is one of the most expensive places to live.

Goodluck and happy hunting.... oh I strongly rec. that you come out yourself and look at places or have someone look at it for you. Some of the adds and pictures look really nice but can be an illusion.

*BUMP*
I've been looking for apts and was wondering if anyone else has done a search out in Pomona. I have some leads, esp w/ the roommate situation but mainly from craigslist posting and not the western housing list, not as many leads on there as I would've hoped...but it's only April so maybe more places will pop up next month.
So I'm interested in the "luxury" apts b/c I'm tired of living like a poor undergrad! I figure it's possible to find something really nice, i.e. 2+ BD's for $700/each person (not including utilities) Some of the more nicer places to live: Ontario, Upland, Clairemont and Rancho. I'll be looking at places/apt hunting April 19th so let me know if you're interested...or if anyone has advice/suggestions that'd be awesome. Also, if you're looking for a roomie....PM me!🙂

Rancho generally has the nicer end of apartments, my last roommates just moved into Madison park apartments (they are located right of the 210 freeway so a bit of a drive) but rent is reasonable. RC is a big plus cause most of its new and theres tons of shops and what not. Chino area on houses/apartments would have the best price for your money (IMO) as with Chino Hills. Some places I looked at were the Canyon Club Apts in Upland, they were nice and roomy 2 bedrooms prices around 1200/month but parking they gave you one cover and then there was open parking but to us it seemed like it would be a problem. The Crest in Pomona is nice very spacious, and first floor apartments are allowed pets with a deposit. Pine club is old and ghetto for what they charge, although there is an albertos down the street which is a plus 🙂 The Park in Pomona seems really nice but the crowd that hands around there not so much.
If you have 3 people the Country Club villas/ Terrace are super nice, in Upland, never rented there but on a decent side of prices for being on the golf course.

I'll have to look at the other places I looked at last time I moved.

Terra Vista was nice, from what I remember of them there was a set of newer apartments all along that area particularily off of church street, It was a little for us but they were in the price range of most the apartments in the area and the amenities were nice.

Mountain Springs was ok - parking seemed like it would be a problem and walking around the evening we looked wasn't as family friendly (some weird people/kinda suspicious)

I didn't look at the Pepperwood Apts but there are quite a few separate apartment complexes along Foothill especially as you get into Upland area that are all fairly decent, the one even had sand volleyball courts a nice pool and what not

If you have the time when your out here looking I suggest going during the day and pick your top 3-4 and visit each one at night, we always look for are there children out playing because that kinda gives the impression that residents feel safe if they aren't hving to guard over the kids 24/7. Asking the local police is also a good idea. We had one in ontario, The Waverly, that we were ready to sign leases on and then talked to a local officer (try flagging down a cop at 10pm at night, its pretty entertaining) and he said they had responded to numerous domestic violence/burglary/attempted rape calls and told us to stay away from there.

One thing I would suggest is go for a central A/C, although if your gonna be at school all the time during the heat of the day then not as big of a deal but we lived in an upstairs apartment and we'd have it going all day and never quite get it cool.

I was looking at the Waverly but will take it OFF the list! So the most lux communities seem to be Rancho and ChinoHills...how bad will the drive be? Is there a train/commuter system from these areas? Montclair seems really nice too and is much closer, but haven't found much online yet.
thanksGeeQued👍

Rancho would be probably 15-20 ish with no traffic Chino Hills is about the same (the 71 gets super backed up in the morning once it turns from freeway to signals) I lived at the furthest point in Chino off of Pine at the 71 and it could easily take me 30-40 minutes to get to Cal Poly exiting off of Valley/Garey

Yeah definitely stay away from the waverly, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot stick

As for public transportation I have no clue but SoCal kinda fails in that department so I'm pretty confident in saying I highly doubt much exists around there. Foothill transit is the one I see but have no clue as far as their routes.

I was looking at some of the newer apartments in north Pomona, about 1.5-2 miles from campus. From photos the apartments look very nice, just pricey though- about $1,000-1,200 for a 1bed/1bath!

Anyone have any insight on the surrounding areas?

What is the zip code of this "in north Pomona, about 1.5-2 miles from campus"?

Maybe Upland, Montclair? Just from what I've seen online, these apts or even townhomes, are very very nice!
SFgeckos, what are the complexes called?

I am currently going to school in the area Cal Poly Pomona so I guess I can add a few things and maybe repeat something’s that have been said before.

As has been said before the area where Western is located (Pomona) is not the best and should be avoided. I am a guy and I would rather not be walking around there at night especially in the areas away from campus. The campus itself seemed safe.

As for the question regarding public transportation there is a Metro Link (commuter train) station located on the west side of the campus.

For apartment choices close to Western, the Crest apartments are a good choice but are a bit pricey. They are very close to Diamond Bar and getting to school should not be too much of a problem but there may be some congestion at the intersection of Mission Avenue and the 71.

The Pine club apartments are also an option, but the area they are located is not the best , kind of ghetto, but is manageable. Would not recommend walking around outside of the complex, which is gated, late night. There are a decent number of Cal Poly Pomona students living in the Pine Club apartments. Cost wise they are definitely cheaper than the The Crest. Not sure on the pets issue. Getting to Western should not be too bad from the Pine Club apartments.

I have seen the Terra Vista apartments in Rancho Cucamonga from the outside and they seem nice. One of the problems of Terra Vista would be getting to school since they are farther away than Pine Club and The Crest. It would take some time to get freeway as well. Depending on what time you would need to get to Western in the morning you would hit traffic especially if you need to be there by before 9AM. In the evening after about 4:30ish heading back from the school you would hit traffic. The area is nice and there are also a lot of stores very close by and as mentioned before Victoria Gardens which is an outdoor mall. Your commute to Western would be around 30minutes with light to no traffic.

Other areas to consider would be(commute should be less than 25-30 minutes):
1.Chino Hills (depending on where in Chino Hills lots of stores around, also a nice area)
2.Diamond Bar (nice area)
3.Chino
4.Montclair (North of the 10 is pretty nice, commute would not be too bad either)
5.Ontario

EDIT:The amount of time it would take to get to Western from Chino Hills/Diamond Bar depends upon where in those cities you will be commuting from, so it may take less time from some areas in Diamond Bar versus some areas of Chino Hills.

Thanks so much for the info! I'll be touring the area this Sunday and have a few places I'll be looking at pretty much all over the area - Pomona, Chinohills, Montclair, Upland, Rancho, Ontario....

As far as times....

Clinical Skills activities begin at 8:00 AM on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and sometimes Wednesday evenings...not every day depends on group number and scheudle.

PBL is in the afternoon for first years and is usually from 1-3:00

Labs are on Tuesday and Thursday from 1-5:00

Question and Answer sessions are scheduled on Fridays from 4-5:00 if requested by the students.

Vet issues is from 10:00-12:00 on Wednesdays and MCB (molecular and cellular biology) is from 10-12:00 on Fridays.

I hope this gives you some idea for times. Some of the rotations you will do for clinical skills are off campus and take some time to get them as well. The furthest we have been so far this year has been a 45 minute commute.
