I am an out of state student, and so, I am obviously clueless when it comes to housing in the area! I am sure I am not the only new student wondering "where am I going to live?" 😉
So I thought we should start a forum to get our questions answered by our future peers!
Here are my questions:
(1) Is student housing worth it (ex. the Helix)?
Yes and no..... It depends what you are looking for in housing. It is one of the most expensive places to live. There are other housing associations just behind the helix that are now allowing students to rent. They are suppose to be running a pretty good deal...and they would include all utilities except for something. But.... it is Pomona and the back side of campus isn't very nice. There are other towns around Pomona that are more appealing... but again do you want to walk to campus or drive five to ten minutes? All depends in what you are looking for.
(2) Is Pomona a safe area to live? What parts of Pomona would you recommend?
Depends on what area of Pomona you are in. There has been one or two incidents on or directly around campus. The areas right around the school I find to be ok. I would still not walk around after dark...even if I was in a group of people. I always carry some sort of protection. Some people choose mase (I keep it on my key chain at all times just in case), and some of my close friends carry taser guns. The best thing I can say is try to check out what area of Pomona you are looking into. If you get on the wrong street it could turn out badley. However, there are some good places in Pomona to live. Like I said you should really try and come out to check around. I was an out of state student and I had a friend check around for me.
(3) Where do most students choose to live?
Students are spread out among a different areas...so I can't really say where most students stay.
(4) What other areas around/outside Pomona would you suggest to look for an apartment?
Claremont, Montclair, La Verne, Rancho, Upland, and West Covina (there are other places as well... but I just can't think right now)
(5) What do you think about living alone vs. finding a vet student roommate?
I was told way back when I was looking to find housing and such that I shouldn't live with another vet student because of dealing with the stress of your first year, the different type of program, and having to spend so much time together, as well as adjusting to a new location. I must say that I live with two other first year students and we have had some rockey areas...but we are still all friends and it would be the same type of problems that you would run into with any roommate. We have not been in the same PBL group so it may be different if we do get put intot he same group. Living alone is ok... there are several students that prefer to do that but the cost of living in SoCal is so high that you really need to budget in any situation. It is nice being able to split rent and such.
(6) What about commuting to campus? Is it difficult? Public Transportation vs. personal transportation?
Ok.... YOU DO NOT WANT TO COMMUTE MORE THAN 20 MIN!!!! Commuting takes away from your study time and students tend to do poorly. There are a couple of people in my class that are commuting about an hour each way and they have a difficult time getting to rotations on time due to traffic, and not wanting to stay on campus to late because of the drive home and such..... JUST DON"T DO IT!!!
The commute to campus is not hard...but can be annoying if there is bumper to bumper traffic... you must be aware this is SoCal and at any time the highway can look like a parking lot...it is not an excuse to be late to any rotation or PBL session etc. If you are not use to driving in a lot of traffic then you may have more trouble and find it difficult to drive in SoCal.
Most students use personal transportation. I do not have my car out here.... so I use public transportation on occassion. I do get rides with my roommates and other classmates etc. I have not had a problem with the transportation. The only complaint I have is it is not very reliable for pick up times.... the bus could be running late or early. You will hear bad things about the public transportation but the people who say those things have never taken the bus before... so don't take everyone's word until you have talked to someone that has actually stepped foot onto the bus. That is what happened to me. Other students live close enough to campus and bike back and forth to the campus. They have not had a problem with this and it is good excercise!
Thanks!
