What are considered above average EC?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know DO schools don't focus on research as much as MD schools...but how much does having a second author publication help for DO schools?
Impossible to predict. It depends on too many factors: school, person reviewing, journal, the type of project, under what academic subject, academic impact, etc. I have a second a authorship on an entomology paper in an average journal, yet I don't expect it to really help me too much.

How much did you contribute to the paper?

How much did you contribute to the paper?

Decent amount. Helped with literature review and collaborated with grad student on experiments. Obviously I am listing it in my app but not sure how much DO schools will care.

Are we still telling each other how average or not our ECs are? Does anyone want to help a sister out?

Most of my experience is payed because I needed the $$$ through college

3 years (avg 10 hrs a week) of being an autism therapist.
240 of cognitive research w/ 4 and 5 year olds with a poster presentation where I was the third author.
220 hours of leadership as a psychology club officer.
50 of volunteering as an ESL tutor to adults.
Shadowed 4 (only 70 hours) doctors, 3 DO (anesthesiologist, neurosurgeon, and a family doctor who practices OMM) and 1 MD (family medicine).
Tutor inorganic and organic chemistry at my U.
Currently working with undeserved minority in building college aspirations and aspirations to study science and math. (about 6 hours a week)
In July I am starting an internship where I will be screening 4 year olds vision and working with the school nurse to help refer them to a optometrist or an ophthalmology where they can get the care they need. (That will 10hrs a week)

Those are the most important ones...there are other things but they are silly and just hobbies.

I am a little nervous about this whole thing, specially since getting my MCAT score back. I scored a "stellar" 7 in VR (2.5 points below my FL average) for a total of 29 (11,7,11). Now the kicker is that I don't have much clinical volunteerr hrs:

80 clinical volunteer in ED
50 shadowing (ongoing) 1MD and 1DO in FP
200 volunteer non-clinical in public health projects at state health department

as far as research hrs i think I am fine (i.e. a bunch of hrs -3years- with posters and a publication 2nd author)

no leadership (what is considered leadership anyway?)

I am in the public health field (non-trad)

so...my clinical volunteer is pretty weak

what do you guys think? beef it up between now and submission of app (1 month or less) or just concentrate on making app better in other aspects...
suggestions?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that i have a part time gig at a clinical lab...does that count for anything? if so, how would you list that under the apps?

If someone could comment on my volunteer/EC/community hours it would be appreciated.

ER/Fracture clinic volunteering at a hospital (3 summers) 120 hours
Tutoring (2 school years) 100 hours
Physician shadowing (60 MD 20 DO) 80 hours
Research assistant 15 hours/week (just started this May)
Campus organization 33 hours
Campus club 32 hours
Organized a fundraiser for Diabetes 15 hours
Intramural Sports 15 hours

Your clinical volunteering is probably a little below average, but everything makes up. Also leadership is a lot things, from coaching a sport or activity for kids to being a project manager for something to being an officer in a club.

I guess I'll post my EC's as well, see what peoples thoughts are. Please note that these EC's are a mix of already accomplished and upcoming, but all are likely to be reported on AMCAS when submitting in 1 year from now:

~120 hours volunteering in an Emergency Room
~150 hours volunteering in Urgent Care Center at a cancer hospital
~50 hours shadowing an Academic Cardiologist, 3 hours/wk for one semester
~30 hours shadowing Cardiologist in a community hospital, 3 hours/wk for one summer
~120 hours shadowing Academic Neuropathologist: attended weekly department seminars/case presentations, learned some histopathology analysis, 4 hours/wk for 2 semesters

Started a club in undergrad that was concerned with cardiovascular, renal, and respiratory physiology and translational research in these areas. President of club for one year (senior year) and club is still active.

Teaching Assistant for Cell Bio and Physiology (one semester each)

20 months full time research in Neuroscience (no publications)

Vice-president of a student organization at a medical school (one year at time of submitting AMCAS)

Shadowed several CT surgeons through a shadowing program at my school - 24 hours shadowing for one week.

Graduate Research Assistant (2 semesters upon submitting AMCAS, 15 hours/week)

Let me know what you guys think!

🙂

You're good, though a little limited in the non- clinical volunteering, but otherwise perfect.

Alright my turn.
2 years working at a senior's community center/ day care (5 hours a week) - clinical?
1 year at hospital ( 4 hours a week)
5 months working at a food warehouse ( 3 hours a week)
1 year helping and coaching a Russian cultural theater group for kids and helped preform twice. ( leadership)
2 years being part of the neuroscience association at my university, 1 year as acting co-president.
Also I'm not sure how to include this, but I was a provider for my grandparents through out college. I cleaned, translated documents for them, took them to doctors and acted as a translator, etc.
Also hopefully I'll be getting about 30 hours of shadowing done.
Though I don't think I'll be able to do any research though. Maybe 4 months max if I can get into a lab the semester before I apply.

no leadership (what is considered leadership anyway?)
Being a club officer or some kind of manager/overlooking others. I've heard things as being a ski instructor qualifying as leadership. It's really broad.

Senior community center would be non-clinical. Definitely get on that shadowing.

I would classify your EC as being about average. Maybe a little bit more for having strong non-clinical volunteering.

Well, it's considered a level 1b clinical setting and all the staff are either CNA or nurses. So it's rather ambiguous whether it is more clinical than non-clinical, that being said I do participate in facilitating physical exercises and feeding a few of the clients.

If they're called clients and not patients, it's non-clinical 😉

Under what category a job in a clinical lab fall under?

Work
Clinical experience?
both?

How would you enter this in your AMCAS,AACOMAS?

I'd still consider it to be non-clinical volunteering.

I'd consider it to be clinical research or work. Unless you're directly working with patients, I don't think it qualifies as clinical.

I put it under work. Anything paid goes into work imo.

I'm curious about this as well. I lived with my g'rents for 2 years when they were ailing. How does this fit into the app?

I have a question, i worked for my Dad's small business throughout my college, however it was unpaid (my parents pay my tuition, so least i can do is help them out) . Is it ok to list this as work?

I did about 20 hrs a week (mostly weekends), making invoices, marketing, making flyers, doing Web design etc...

Can someone let me know how I rank with EC's since I feel I am going to be even more of an underdog now (may void my MCAT late June to retake late July...), so stressssssed:

Red Cross disaster services volunteer (500 hours/6 years - present): responded locally to fires, floods, CO poisonings, other natural disasters.
Red Cross EMT (300 hours/2 years - present): deployed nationally to disaster areas (Joplin, MO for the tornado and White Plains, NY for Hurricane Irene) where I was directly assigned to work for patients under the care of nurses/doctors.
EMT for my non-profit emergency ambulance corp (100 hours so far, still doing it): pre-hospital care (note: this isn't a transport company, this is emergencies only).
Shadowed two D.O's that worked together (switched every other day, 200 hours total): Used OMT daily, and they were family medicine/internal med doc's. They also operated a state of the art "patient centered medical home" (PCMH) and the office I shadowed them in was also a resident-training clinic, so I interacted with them as well.
Service Club member/public affairs officer (4 years, 300 hours): Helped plan and attended events ranging from cleaning highways and walking dogs at the local animal shelter to hosting dances for children and adults with special needs and arts and crafts with senior citizens in nursing homes.
Research at my undergrad institution: involved extraction of phthalates using high performance liquid chromatography (200 hours, including being selected to attend a undergraduate research and creativity celebration my college hosts, a poster presentation, an oral presentation, and a certificate of excellence).
Peer tutor at my undergrad college (2 years, 240 hours): including all major science courses, English, and mathematics. Had to maintain a 3.0gpa and get a B+ or higher in the courses you wanted to tutor to be invited to the tutoring program.
Teacher Aide for my high school's summer science camp (40 hours): aimed specifically at increasing interest in the sciences for disadvantaged students middle-school. Taught a&p, dissection, water biology, ecology, engineering, forensics, etc etc.
Adult Leader for my high school's summer service days program (40 hours): involves fixing, cleaning, and organizing inner-city schools, places of worship, houses owned by the elderly, abandoned yards (to make fields) and things of that sort.
Volunteer for my city's senior citizen nutrition program (100 hours): which involved helping plan, cook, and deliver meals to the large number of senior citizens in my city that can not get out to the store themselves or are bedridden.

Extremely above average.

OMT daily in family medicine? That's pretty cool. I shadowed a FM DO who was legitimately interested in OMM (teaching it to residents and using it in her practice) and she said she only used it once or twice a month on the same patients and occasionally a patient who would call in because they had sore muscles.

Yeah I was really lucky in that regard. I can't think of a day where I didn't see it being used. My favorite was on a 6mo pregnant woman with severe sinusitis, and my friend I recommended go see them for OMT for his cerebral palsy.

Some of these have already been answered... but I'll just give my opinion. Here we go:

I have done 100 hours of voluntary clinical research with direct contact with patients and doctors so far at a top rated hospital, along with 5 years and 400+ hours volunteering at an elementary school, i hold a leadership position at a club at my school, and I am president of an outreach foundation aimed at helping immigrants. along with playing music and doing sports, just wondering is that average or above? My gpa is ehh so I'm hoping my EC might give me a few looks

Your ECs are great and well rounded. You're definitely fine in this category. EC's might make up a little for a lower GPA, but it depends on how low, low is. The MCAT helps balance a low GPA more than ECs will.

Are we still telling each other how average or not our ECs are? Does anyone want to help a sister out?

Your clinical is lacking as you said, but it's not THAT bad. The fact that you've been doing research for 3 years will tell adcoms "he didn't get tons of clinical experience, but it's not like he was doing nothing during that time". Your MCAT is good as well. Leadership is whenever you direct a group of people and delegate tasks, as well as do them yourself. So being an officer of a club, or being the founder of some service project/internship. Lots of people have gotten in without leadership (although, I consider it to be really important!!!). 😎 You'll be fine though.

If someone could comment on my volunteer/EC/community hours it would be appreciated.

Don't forget, "+6k posts on SDN before applying". But yeah, your ECs look good. Well rounded/diverse. For your grandparents, you can put "Caretaker" as the position, and in the description explain your responsibilities. I think even without research you'll be okay, assuming your GPA/MCAT are average. But of course, research will only help... and if it's interesting/fun, it'll be good for your brainz.

Also I'm not sure how to include this, but I was a provider for my grandparents through out college. I cleaned, translated documents for them, took them to doctors and acted as a translator, etc.

Put "Caretaker", and explain the situation in the description. Make sure you show them why your situation is actually worth putting on the application. Some people have asked if they could put "babysitting little brother". That's not really an EC, since you're just keeping an eye on your brother. But if you have a legit explanation (which I'm sure you do), be sure to explain it fully so they don't brush it off as fluff.

I have a question, i worked for my Dad's small business throughout my college, however it was unpaid (my parents pay my tuition, so least i can do is help them out) . Is it ok to list this as work?

I was in a similar situation and listed it as work experience. So yeah, put it under work experience. 🙂

How about my EC's...compared to many of these they seem lacking 🙁
*4 years church volunteer-Sunday school teacher, maintenance work, mowing lawn, etc
*1.5yrs nursing aide on surgical floor of hospital, full time w/full time classes
*1 semester tutor Chemistry and Biology
*Host/Organize blood drive at college (leadership)
*3 years of various jobs-25-35hrs/week
*1 semester research w/poster presentation
*6mths (100hrs) family practice shadowing, 8hrs surgery shadowing, 30hrs MD shadowing
So what do you think??

Umm i have a bagilliongazillion hours of volunteering, do you guys think that is enough???

Lol jk. Most of you guys are wayyy above average, i envy yall. Gonna spend my summer stalking doctors and volunteering to get it up by the time interviews roll around (assuming i get called for some).

Who knew neurotic SDNers would have above average ECs in addition to above average GPA/MCAT scores. SDN should start its own medical school.

haha...from the looks of it, I would be instantly rejected if they ever did make a school!

Stop making me look bad everyone! Overachievers 😉

Yea.

SDN MD would be 3.99/40 MCAT/5000 hours volunteering, 2000 hours shadowing, president of 5 clubs, 10 publications, started own fortune 500 company, LOR from Obama.

SDN DO would be 3.90/30 MCAT/4000 hours volunteering, 1500 hours shadowing, president of 4 clubs, 5 publications, started own fortune 100 company, LOR from Biden.

Hey guys, here is my less-than-stellar ECs. Hoping for some feedbacks:

1. 200+ Volunteering as a CCE (1 year)
2. 50 hours volunteering in a local Convalescent home (1 year)
3. 100 - 150 hrs of non-clinical volunteering (mostly community services)
4. Part of a Soccer Team that participates in an annual competition (we practice every week)...also served as the team's vice-captain (2007 - present)
5. 1 month volunteering in a hospital in a third-world country
6. Member of a Medical Club in my University (2 years)
7. Worked Part time during my first 2 years in college
8. Tutored in Chemistry, Biology and English (and 2 foreign languages) for 2+ years
9. Co-founder of an organization in LA (a little, insignificant organization, mind you ) that aims to bring movies from my country (a developing nation): in fact our organization was the first organization to bring my country's local movies in the big theaters of LA...don't know if that counts for something )
10. 40 hours shadowing a DO and an MD

Notable absence is research: It never fascinated me and thus never felt like giving it a go (and probably never will!)

I noticed someone already asked about leadership...

Does being vice-captain of a soccer team count towards "leadership"? What about being a co-founder of a small organization?

Thanks.

my friend had absolutely no research and minimal volunteering, like maybe 50 hours or less total lol and she still got in after applying late, she had an MD gpa though. Your ECs look great to me, and yes i'd count that as leadership.

400 Hrs ED Volunteering (EMT-B)
50 Hrs Misc. Volunteering (marathons, habitat for humanity)
2 years full time resarch. (1 but hopefully 2 publications, the second being first author)
2 years full time cardiographic technician/supervisor (patient and physician contact)
NO SHADOWING, but close family friend DO graduate from my in-state, regionally biased school writing me a letter

is the lack of shadowing a killer? I'm still working on getting at least some experience to hopefully have some by the time (fingers crossed) i am granted an interview somewhere.
