Hi everyone, I took a good look around the forums before starting this, but I could not find a "what are my chances" thread. 3rd year at a middle tier school in north east.

Step 1: 239
Preclinical: 75% honors in all classes
Clinical: just started, no grades yet
Likely senior AOA
Pubs: 3 pubs (0 ophtho), 2 patents pending (one optho)
Middle tier school in northeast
ECs: extensive and interesting

I know from the NRMP my score is at the average for ophtho, but do my pubs and ECs set me apart enough for a more competitive location? NYC area would be ideal, but from what I've read, it looks like that would be a stretch for me. Advice?

you should do well in the match. apply broadly including well known programs and "safety" programs. interview well, be nice and energetic.

if there is one program you are really interested in, an away rotation is helpful.

Ophtho patents pending? What are you patenting?

Get involved in ophtho research and get good LORs from ophtho attendings. They want to see how committed you are. I would recommned do not even bring up patents....that can go either way it is tricky.
Good luck

Just curious. When and why would having patents be perceived negatively?
