Hey everyone,

I will be applying to schools this summer and am putting together the schools I wish to apply to. Can you give an assessment of choices?

I graduated over a year ago and currently work in the technology space. The work I do, however, is related to health care and I've had a significant part in bringing this company up from working in a shared space to being featured in the media now.

My GPA is 3.8+ for both cumulative and science. I have about 100 hours of shadowing - 1 General, 2 specialties - and I also participated in a variety of dental programs from a few dental schools in my area. I did research for 1.5 semesters although not heavily. I've also accumulated alot of experience in other health care fields (medicine, physical therapy, public health, health tech, etc.) because I tested the waters in various professions for a few years. I also worked alot during my undergrad years (internships and part time job as cashier and such).

I'd say that the above are my strengths but I have some weaknesses as well that could hurt my application. For example:

1. My volunteer hours are nothing like the other's here. I did Habitat for Humanity for a summer and one-time events here and there. Other than that, most of my time has been spent at work.

2. I graduated but my school is still offering to write a committee letter. HOWEVER, the process hasn't even started at the school and the application is opening in a few weeks. If I get lucky, I'll probably get a letter completed in July or something. I'm thinking of submitting my letters individually and just explaining that I already graduated and the committee process at my school got delayed for a long time if schools ask.

3. If I get a letter from a dentist, it'll be from a specialist. Not sure if this is a minus since I don't have one from a general dentist. Maybe it doesn't matter at all?

4. My AA is a 21, TS is a 22. BUT, my RC is an 18 and my PAT is a 19.

I'm applying to schools in the NE such as Rutgers, UConn, UPitt, Columbia, Harvard, UPenn, Boston, Stony Brook, NYU, UMaryland. I am a NJ resident.

Any thoughts?

You need to retake the DAT. Your RC is too low and that's a big factor in determining if a student can read scientific literature on the spot and obtain correct information to answer difficult questions. Everything else just showcases that you memorized reactions and biological mechanisms.

Not all schools do the committee letter so it's not like schools are going to ask you, but I feel like there is a slight advantage to the committee letter as they can sum up all of your letters into one nice cover letter. I got my dentist letter from a pediatric dentist, it didn't seem to be a issue that I knew of.

If you're not a NY resident Stony Brook is a shot in the dark.
