What are my chances? Is the Step 2 too late?

Hi Guys,

Yet another "what are my chances thread".
This is my situation:

  • Attend a Low/Middle tier medical school
  • STEP 1: 252
  • STEP 2: Taking in December/January. I know this is too late, should I try to take it earlier?
  • High passes in surgery, pediatrics, neurology and psychiatry rotations
  • Passes in IM and Obgyn. 'Superior' IM shelf exam (if that counts for anything)
  • Some (1 summer) IM research... no papers/abstracts
  • Decent LORs
I am very interested to apply to IM programs, may venture to try my luck at some of the small community Rads programs as well.

What are my chances for IM. I know my chances are (very) small to match/interview at top tier places, but how about middle tier institutions such as Cleveland, University of Chicago etc??

Someone obviously hasn't been paying attention to this year's ranking thread . . . :nono: (I kid, I kid . . .)

I think that 252 opens a lot of doors my friend. I think you are correct in that you'll probably not find a invite to one of the "elites" with that 252 alone. However, with that said, I think many of the commonly bandied about "top 30 programs" would interview you.

And step 2 is NOT an issue with such a high score on step 1

You will definitely match at a decent IM academic program.

Taking Step 2 to have a score ready for residency directors is not a good use of your time. You already proved you are a good test taker. What you need to do it take an early medicine Sub-I and get honors or a high pass. A couple of my friends were in this position (good grades, pass in medicine). Both did well in the sub-I and ended up at good places for residency (OSU, Jefferson). Good luck!
