You should do well and should match somewhere...

Why don't you do some away rotations at places your interested in?

I think you have a good shot. Are you just wondering or how much time are you willing to put into making yourself a stellar candidate? There are things you can do.

What kind of things can be done? I know it is officially 1 year away until my class goes through the match, but with the increased competitiveness this year I am already starting to worry! The DO degree doesn't make me worry any less either. Any advice from DOs that matched this time around??

Im glad i can answer this question (meaning i matched)

I would:

1) Take step II early. Nail it. Trust me, you need something to separate you. It isnt Step I, so it should be Step II, research, PhD, peace corps, something. Step II is probably the easiest to manage off that list 😉

2) Find a place (or two) that has taken DO's in the past amd rotate there. For example, dont try to go to Cornell or UCSF for a rotation, because you might get it, but it wont help you match (or even interview) there. I found on my interviews that Vandy, JHU, Florida, Rush, and UTSW were DO-friendly, meaning that if you look the part on paper, it really doesnt matter so much where you went to school or what your letters are. I rotated ar Vandy, fell in love with the program and ranked it number 1. I cant say that it would have been #1 if I hadnt rotated there, but it is the place for me.

3) Apply widely (I applied at 28 programs)

4) Get two letters from MD physicians that you rotate with. I was told point blank at two of my rotations that having excellent letters from "MD anesthesiologists" made a big deal in my selection.

5) Relax

Good luck this year. PM me if you have any specific questions.

To follow up, while MI, FL and IL arent CA and NY, they are competitive regions in their own right. Don't be just another guy, find a way to stand out.

hey,
i gave you my stats a couple of months ago. A D.O with really similar numbers.
After the first two years of school i was in the bottom 25% however.
So i matched at the ninth place i ranked (out of 13).

Going to the bronx (einstein program).

I never took my step 2 usmle and took the comlex after my app had been sent through eras.
If you want to stay in those states, i may suggest that you rotate at a decent program in one of those states. It will show that you are willing to live in that particular location.
And if you decide to take the USMLE step2 in time for it to be seen when you send your app, you must do well. Doing worse on that test may very well be a critical blow to your app. SO if u are going to take it early, commit to a date and set aside study time.

So to summarize. you've got a great shot at being an anesthesiologist. A good one in the states you listed. Do not discount, however, the amount of variability that lies in the match.

you'll be fine. still healthy to worry a little bit though. keeps u on your toes.

Later

You stated to do something different... I do plan on taking step 2... but I am a little worried I may not do as well as I did on step 1... When do you think would be the best time to take it, so I dont have to show them my score unless I want to.... Would mid august or early sept be a good time???

also I am very interested in rush and florida.... esp florida... if you dont mind me asking what were your scores to earn an interview there....i understand if you do not want to reveal your scores...

thanks

congrats

after you submit your ERAS.

The earliest you can transmit your ERAS is Sept 1. So if you take it so your scores are ready after that date you can choose to submit it after your app is sent. If you do worse, you dont have to send the score. If you do well, you canhop online and request for your USMLE transcript to be resent.
The problem is that if you have done worse and decide not to send it, you may be asked during your interviews if you have taken the test (and how u did). Carefully chosen words can help you get around this question without indicating you have done worse. Still incorporates an element of shade.
At most interviews, I was not questioned about step 2 results.

I am the last person in my class, last place. 😱

Got called into the Dean's office for inquiring about AOA, told me to stop kidding around. 🙄

I GOT NO HONORS

Failed MANY Med school exams, BARELY PASSED THE STUPID SHELF EXAMS 😛

Passed Step I and Step II by the skin of my teeth --> <<200 :wow:

Did no away rotations in anything 🙄

Applied to 30 programs, I got 18 interview offers 😕 , went to 17 of them, ranked all 17 and got my second pick. :wow: :wow:

Oh my god, I am so happy I didn't go to a Caribbean School or a DO program, I would be in Family Medicine TODAY! :barf:

I'm not sure how serious you are, but hopefully you will appreciate the fact that many of your future DO/FMG collegues have worked their tails off to be where they are....just a thought.

That is exactly my point. People talk about the difficulty of getting into Anesthesia recently. I don't see it for US Allopath Grads, more and more US Allopaths are applying, hence the increasing difficulty for DO and FMG applicants. Am I wrong? This is my observation, maybe everyone finds it easy.

Or you would have had to actually do some work.

Aahh...nothing like rewarding mediocritry. Proof that anyone can succeed once they get into medical school.

I hope you're joking, but you never know. Regardless, you could also go to a med school, learn something in your classes, do well on boards, find a hobby, have a life, and even get your first residency pick. Maybe thats the "DO advantage"? I admit we got a little squeezed out at some of the big names this year (not too many DO's, if any, interviewed at MGH/B&W, Columbia, UCSF, etc.) but we had many matches at great programs and I know that it was a relatively tough year for our specialty.

As for advice, I would take Step II and do well on it if your Step I score doesnt distinguish you, but I would suggest this for an MD student as well.

is this guy really lying? i dont think so. plain and simple TRUTH. it will be 'harder' for DO/FMGs in the future.

Idio...just shove the "DO advantage" bud. wake up and smell the roses.

     You are really going to get heated up over this one bro.

#1 MGH
#2 Columbia
#3-#17 from NYC right down the Coast.

I worked hard to GET IN at an Ivy League US Allopath School. I took it easy, so what. I got what I wanted. You didn't work hard to get in at US Allopath schools, but you did work hard to steal a US Allopathic Residency. Good for you. My Main Point is 😱 THERE IS NO DO/FMG ADVANTAGE 😱

WORK HARD TO GET IN AT AN ALLOPATHIC PROGRAM IN THE US

Reading your last few posts I'm pretty sure that you couldn't be a bigger tool if you tried. Do you really think ANYONE on the planet believes that DOs have an advantage in matching? We know that DOs have it harder, so what is your obsession with the DO vs MD thing? Please leave the forums now that you matched and go be a cancer on whatever "lucky" program got you.

Hey I'm new at this so forgive me...

I have a quick question... I took Comlex Level I and II and USMLE Step II, but I DID NOT TAKE STEP 1. I scored > 600 on both Level I and Level II and > 230 on Step II. I have several interviews from FL, IL, IOWA, and NY (8 total). I was wondering should I go back and take Step 1?
I have great letters (1 IM and 2 anesthesia) and great class rank... Does anyone have any advice for me? I wish I took it!

I think you are going to be too late in the game if you decided to take USMLE I now. 4-5 weeks to get your results....already Nov....you aren't going to generate anymore interviews. I think you will be just fine with the application you have already put forward. Just me 2 cents.
