Okay, so first of all I am a junior and going to be a senior really soon (20ish days). I am really interested in ER Medicine and Trauma Surgery (shadowed a trauma surgeon for a while) and wanted to know things I can do this summer in AZ. I feel like I should be doing things that will be beneficial for me during my pre-med years but AZ is so lame there are barely any research positions for high schoolers and most hospital volunteering program is already full of repeat volunteers. I want to be productive this summer and was looking for things I can do. I want to work on getting my EMT-B license but I have to be 18 and that is still 2 years away for me.

What are some things I can do here in AZ, and I'm not lazy to look for anything, I already have for a LONG time but can't find anything! I would like to volunteer at a hospital, research center, or any other place that has to do with patient care and medicine.

Please help me out! 🙂 Thanks! Anyone else going to HS in AZ and want to do something productive over this summer?

Volunteer as an EMT cadet. That's what I'm doing.

You live in az? Ill look into that! Thanks🙂

At your stage, you don't have to do anything medically related. Just pick something you're passionate about and excell at it.

Can someone give me more info on what a EMT Cadet does? Thanks. And also how I would go about getting a position as a cadet?

EMT cadet I'm sure is to similar to a nursing intern, only that you're shadowing/learning as an EMT certification. Talk with some local EMS agencies to see what they offer, or the state's EMS office usually has some good info.

However, I was aware that PA was the only state that allowed EMT/EMT cadets under 18. It's kinda pointless too if you want to go to school out of state after you turn 18. You usually need your national registry (which requires you to be 18) in order to get reciprocity in another state.

At this point look at volunteering somewhere. I would be very surprised if you found a volunteering position at this point that directly involved patient care. If you're 16, at this point they really don't care what you're doing. Just do something. Maybe a job? 🙂

I don't know what the rules are in AZ, as I live in VT.
Basically here what you can do as a 16 or 17 year old is this:

-Spend time in the ambulance and on the job learning from actual EMTs
-Take classes in preparation for the EMT-B exam.

So it's actually a meaningful experience, and it's free. But you have to be accepted and I think you actually do have some basic responsibilities.

Well this summer, I'll be practicing my Spanish with some kids in Phoenix.
Not very medically-related... but the school I want to go encourages doing things I want to do, so yea 😛

I go to HHS by the way.

Thanks for all the advice guys, looks like AZ doesn't really have a EMT cadet program, they do have a Fire Fighting cadet? Ill keep looking into it! Higley? Lol, I go to queen creek! Sooooo, how bout those football games (;

Couldn't you also just be a first responder. I've never heard of an EMT cadet I'm not sure if their the same thing but just called differently depending on what state you live in.

I took an EMT B course the summer after I graduated high school. But I don't think there is anything wrong with just relaxing as you summers may be filled with other activities after this!

What rule states that you have to be 18? I've seen 16 year olds working on EMT squads.

I think the LAW says something (in most states) about being 15 or 16. Most training programs say 18 and/or have a high school diploma or equivalent. If the received training and certification on the job, they are probably okay.

Yeah, but I don't think the law says you need to be 18. Most of my local EMT squads have training programs for 16 and 17 year olds.

The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGEN) in DT PHX takes high schoolers for research. You'll get paid $10/hr for 40 hrs weekly over the course of three months to do research as a Helios Scholar. They also take academic year students that want to intern on an unpaid basis.

Check out the AZ Academy of Emergency Services. You can get your EMT-B training there and then you can apply for EMS or hospital ER Tech jobs and volunteer opportunities. The EMT-B program us 8 weeks in length and costs $1200.

Has to do with National Registry.

You have two certifications as an EMS provider, National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) and your state certification. Your state certification is the one that allows you to practice in that state, but the requirements for each are pretty varied state to state. This is how some people can practice as an EMT while only 16 or 17.

National Registry allows a person to take another test, and pass. It has a bunch of requirements of mainly being 18, have a high school education, etc, the basics. Getting national registry is basically another certification, however it is somewhat meaningless. Doesn't boost your pay or scope at all. It is important though to have if you plan on moving to a different at any time in your life. Most states will require a state and national certification in order to apply for licensure reciprocity.

South Dakota requires new EMTs and Paramedics to be nationally registered, so therefore we need to be 18.

So if you get nationally registered does it become easier to get licensed in other states?

I've already tried Tgen. They are really picky about high schoolers because pre-med students and grad students can apply to the internship so it would make sense they try to only take them. I've heard from somewhere that they don't like to take in high schoolers. I applied for the Helios Scholar Program and got a rejection letter.

Also, I can't just go and do my EMT-B cause apparently in AZ you have to be 18. There are no EMT cadet programs here... What requirements do ER Techs need? EMT-B huh?

There honestly isn't anything medically related for me to do here! 🙁 Please feel free to give me more advice! Looks like EMT and Tgen are out of the picture (for me). Hmmmmm, what else?

Not true. The year that I did TGEN, there were 15 high schoolers out of 30 Helios Scholars. They are picky so you have to submit an app early and it helps if you have already spoken to someone that would agree to take you into their lab. You can also start emailing professors over there and ask if they would take you on as a volunteer; there were a few high school students that got in this way. You have to be persistent to get into TGEN but it can be done!

Okay so I emailed a few research professors at ASU's Biodesign Institute and one of them has replied saying, "Yes I will be happy to meet with you." and then she copied her assistant in to set up a time and date. Will it be basically like an interview where she will ask me my motives and why I want to do this? In my first email to her, I stated that I was a excelling high school student who is looking to expand clinical skills by volunteering my time towards her research project. I have a few week before I go in and talk with her. What are some things I should do? Like look up stuff about her research (i've already started that), and how will this basically be like??????? graduate2be, please help me out!🙂

Biodesign is a great place to work; I worked there while I was in undergrad and learned A LOT.

Ok, so treat this like a job interview. Read up on the professors research and prepare a few intelligent questions to ask her before hand. She will likely ask you why you want to volunteer. Its OK if you say that you are trying to get experience so that you can apply to medical schoolbut don't beat that horse to death. Mention that you also want real-life practicle experience that csn help you as you make decisions about school and career. Oh, and this isn't clinical experience if she takes you in as a volunteer; medical schools will consider this to be research experience (that may have future clinical applications) which is just as valuable. What professor responded to you?

Dr. Anderson! How should I go about dressing? Have you ever talked to Dr. Anderson?

Karen Anderson? SMART lady! I didn't work in her lab (I worked in the Haydel and Curtis-Clark labs) but I am well aware of Dr. Anderson's work and reputation. I would dress in Dockers, nice polo and nice shoes. You know, business casual. If you get into her lab, you'll have one up on a lot of undergrad and grad students. She is really a good mentor frim what I've heard...

Yes! Karen Anderson! Yeah from what I see on her lab website, she seems like a really smart lady! Being a high school student, I obviously don't have full knowledge of what they are researching in complete depth (I have a general understanding and I will be looking into it more the next couple of days to get a better understanding). I stated in my first email that I am a high school junior, and want to volunteer so hopefully they don't think of me as being "dumb" compared to other research assistants and such... That kind of scares me, just knowing that I've never really had formal lab experience or knowledge of how Proteomics can help identify immune response biomarkers. What do you think?

So for starters, NO ONE is going to expect you to be an expert on proteomics, immunology, the Western Blot, or any of the other stuff that you will eventually learn about. The point of reading up on some of these things before you meet with Dr. Anderson is to ensure that you have a base level of background knowledge. She and the grad students and post doc's will teach you what you need to know. In fact, when you start, you'll probably start off washing glassware and equipment so that you get familiar with the lab. You may next start to learn how to make cell growth media or start to shadow someone in the lab as they work on a project. As the lab gains confidence in you and your abilities, then you will start to get more and more responsibility. Take it from me, you are starting this in the right way and you won't regret taking these steps. This is a really good thing that you are doing. Keep in touch and let me know how the experience is! 🙂

Where in AZ are you, Phoenix, Tucson, elsewhere?

I made this plug before, but lifeguarding is a good experience, training is simpler, and the hours tend to be more flexible (I.e you can still work during the school year), and if you keep your certs up to date you can do it in college as well.

Hello, do you happen to know if she is still accepting volunteers?

I am going in for an interview later this week. I honestly don't know, I know that a lot of labs are full because I tried all of them.

Interview went great! I will be helping with dry research until I turn 18 due to lab policies. Dr. Anderson is such an amazing person and everyone on her team is great! She said that she won't be taking on anyone else for this summer/year because she has a lot of people in the lab I suppose! Can't wait to meet up with one of the postdocs and learn everything I need to know. For now, time to research everything we talked about! 🙂

Very good. Told you it would go well. Now make like a sponge and absorb everything that they expose you to. 🙂

So I turned all my paper work in, they made me an ASU account and created my affiliation. But its almost been a month (tomorrow) since I had interviewed. I haven't gotten word on when to start back yet. I emailed the professors assistant about 10 days ago asking if all my papers were processed and she said she would get with me asap when everything is ready. Its almost halfway into June and not a single email. I am kind of disappointing but I am just going to wait. Doing just a month of research would be pointless imo. Cause I'd only have like 3 weeks after training and such. Any advice????

Not doing research while in highschool won't kill your med school app. Hit the gym.

I am doing it more as building a relation with this professor as she is really cool and said I she would love to have me research for her during my actual pre-med years!

But talking about the gym, I've been going to LA the past week and I am just too sore right now. Weekend=recovery.

Then do it during your premed years. She won't change her mind if you tell her that you'd rather wait until then. Hell, I told the professor of internal medicine for UofM med school that I'd do a project for him, got caught up in school work, bailed on him (apologized profusely) and he said not to sweat it, and contact him next year (he actually said that he was pretty sure I wouldn't do it).

And with that, I'm going to bed. Two 3 hour flights tomorrow.

Eh, I personally want to see how it is. I, in a sense, have nothing really better to do this summer!

Where are you flying to? And for what occasion if you don't mind?

Back home from Florida. Vacation

Do whatever you want, just don't bend over backwards for this. You're still in high school. Plenty of time to rack up those EC's.

Awesome man! Have a safe journey back!

yeeah i'd agree.. I had no research whatsoever and got into some pretty good schools if I say so myself 👍 moneys a different story though..

you'll be fine dude, but if it does happen have fun 😀

good job dude 👍 what's the research about? (sorry if you said it, but i didn't see it anywhere.)

Sorry for the late reply! Just got back from research. So the research I am currently working on deals with T cells how those detect the viral peptides that are created in an infected cell. Right now what I am doing is a bunch of Datamining and finishing up a database that will allow me to create a algorithm that will help compute some stats on them such as why the peptides are folding the way they do and other stuff. I can't do any wet research due to my age but this is not to bad! And also, I am completely new to this stuff so I am learning as I go so if whatever I said doesn't make sense, its because I am half educated on these things (I am reading a textbook and watching vids to develop a full understanding) or I am just tired and I am typing jibgab. The end

My friend killed zebra fish in her lab.

That actually would be pretty sick! Not to say I am a fish murderer or anything 😉

I'm currently deciding between something like that, and doing studies on nosocomial infections.

Congrats by the way.

I'd say do the HAI research! The immune system is just amazing and so interesting! The postgrad student gave me a crash course on immunology 101 today and it was pretty sick! So much studying to do!

I'm taking Immunology as a requirement for my major either this year or next year.

Nice!!! It's some good stuff!

P.S, how is there no green dot showing your online but you still reply? On ur phone?
