What do AEGD/GPR/Specialty programs look for in an applicant? I am clueless here...is it like getting into dental school that is based heavily on GPA and test scores? Anything else?

Agreed. If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge not getting matched.

same things that got you into dental school in the first place. above average grades, test scores, research, personality...

no need to reinvent the wheel.

From my experience in applying to OMFS - it's all about grades (board score, GPA, rank). Second is showing dedication to OMFS (externships, shadowing experience, LORs) and knowing what the field is about. Third I would say is personality and communication skills.

I felt community-service/research/student government didn't help at all.

1. publications
2. CDE
3. extracurricular activities
4. private practice experience
5. public health experience
6. LORs
7. SOP
8. specialty program completion

Theses are the attributes listed by the program directors in a survey when they were asked about the qualities they look for, in an applicant
