In regards to Anesthesiology, what do you guys think are the most important classes during 1st and 2nd year of med school? Also, thanks for the responses in my previous threads. I'm learning a lot here.

I just posed this question not 2 hours ago. Great minds must think a like. Check it out in the forum under "Interesting Classes/Subjects"

physiology. specifically CV and Pulmonary. But, Renal and Neuro are also important. pharmacology, esp. agents that modulate the nervous system.

Tell you the truth it doesn't really matter. Just try to enjoy medical school, don't make yourself miserable. Most important thing is to try to understand the big picture of medicine because chances are you'll forget the detail after step 1/2 and end up relearning the anesthesia specific things in residency.

The bad thing about anesthesia: you pretty much have to know everything. No telling when you'll have to sedate a Diabetic patient with Guillain-Barre.

The good thing: No one else in the hospital expects you to know anything.

At the ASA meeting in October, one of the PDs got up and talked about what he looks for on the app when selecting candidates to for interviewing and ranking.

1st and 2nd year grades - not even on his radar.

Important (in his opinion)
1. MSPE - which is mostly clinical clerkship evaluations
2. Step 1
3. Transcript
4. Letters
5. Personal statement
(no mention of AOA)

So:
Rock 1st and 2nd years not for it's own sake but because evals might be on your MSPE, they prep you for Step 1, they're on your transcript, and they might contribute to AOA. Specific classes - no one's gonna care.

Most important things to learn in 1st and 2nd year that are applicable to anesthesia

1) How to keep awake and alert in a dark room after staying up all night partying, drinking, and/ or responding to SDN posts.

2) How to sit on a stool for hours on end without taking a pee break.

3) How to get around the internet filters built in the hospital wi-fi networks so that you can cruise for SDN and internet porn when on call.

Just enjoy the ride, get reasonable grades, and do well on step one.
