How was your Dr. appointment![]()
Fine. She wants to run blood work but wants to wait until the symptoms I was having flare up again... So I am just in the waiting game right now.

Don't discount the connections you can make during those!!
. Just about too late).Just picked up 20 gallons of black walnuts(in green hulls) off the ground from the ONE small tree in my yard. 😍 Left a note on a facebook city group asking if anyone had any in their yard that I could come pick up. I hope some people respond in the next couple days! My dad and I decided to do them this year(actually decided today. Just about too late).
To do them this year?
What do you do with 20+ gallons of black walnuts?
A lot, unfortunately. They are a lot of work, to get the actual walnut fruit. Most walnuts you get at the market are from the English Walnut tree. Those are much easier to open.
Black walnuts are hard as feck. Literally. You gather them off the ground. The hulls are green in the tree and when they fall. You gather them when they fall. Remove hull when it is yellowish-green and you can leave an indent when you push on it. Then the hull will come off easily.
After removing hull, you have to wash the nuts in pails, vigorously agitaing the water/nut mixture to remove all debris. Usually need to do this 2-3 times per batch. Then spread nuts(still in shell) out on a screen to dry for a few days(away from squirrels, they LOVE them). Then put them in a cool, dry place to 'cure' for 4-6 weeks minimum.
Then, try and crack the shell open without crushing it to smithereens. The shells are HARD. Preferred method is to use a vice. I kid you not.
It's time consuming, but so worth it. They are much stronger flavor than the store walnuts(English variety).
Oh yeah, and the hulls dye your hands and clothes black if you aren't wearing gloves. Always wear gloves. And Black Walnut is toxic to some animals and plants. Can't dispose of hulls and tainted water in any stream or lake, will kill the fish. Can't put it in the compost or garden, will kill the plants. Earthworms apparently don't do well with it either.
But they are oh-so-good. Especially, in ice cream, cookies, cakes, etc. 😍
My toxicology prof must have done a good job. All I can think is laminitis in horses when I hear black walnut...
👍 Juglans is very toxic, but not to humans.

I am having a massive chocolate craving right now, but I don't have any chocolate...
I think a quick trip to the store might be in order.
👍

But where are the Staedtlers?
I'm a persistent snacker when I study. Inevitably, I ingest a lot of sour patch kids. But I have some healthy alternatives these days.
And I'm not much for dried fruit, generally, but
are both so so amazing. Yum.

I just put them back in the box!![]()
(not a scared face- a blue, hypothermic shivering face!) since it's started to get pretty darn cold at nights up here. Landlord took the furnace for maintenance, should be back Friday but I'm looking at a chilly couple of nights. Planning to hole up in bed with my new ultra thick wool socks suited for -40 temps, flannel PJ pants and my public health notes. Exam tomorrow, ack!Listening to my space heater heating up, hoping it will keep my room warm enough to prevent hypothermia tonight(not a scared face- a blue, hypothermic shivering face!) since it's started to get pretty darn cold at nights up here. I have a sofa if it gets too cold!
Trying to sign up for next semester classes and the stupid enrollment system is only letting me sign up for one class. All the others are not working. ARG.
