What are you doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I really have to stop napping. Every time I do it I wake up with a headache, feeling nauseated, and groggy. And then I can't get anything done. Like studying for my botany "quiz" tomorrow. (PS why do all plants look the same and have horrible scientific names?)

Don't discount the connections you can make during those!!

Well, that's why I went in the first place. But there was legitimately no time to even talk to other students. I was gonna tell them about the wonder of SDN!

Just picked up 20 gallons of black walnuts(in green hulls) off the ground from the ONE small tree in my yard. 😍 Left a note on a facebook city group asking if anyone had any in their yard that I could come pick up. I hope some people respond in the next couple days! My dad and I decided to do them this year(actually decided today . Just about too late).

To do them this year?
What do you do with 20+ gallons of black walnuts?

Home from camping. Had an amazing day exploring today- couple different parks and wildlife refuges, and stopped at two wineries on the way home. Dont want to be back in the real world.

Now I'm home on the couch with some hot chocolate. Nights like this make me wish I had cable!

A lot, unfortunately. They are a lot of work, to get the actual walnut fruit. Most walnuts you get at the market are from the English Walnut tree. Those are much easier to open.

Black walnuts are hard as feck. Literally. You gather them off the ground. The hulls are green in the tree and when they fall. You gather them when they fall. Remove hull when it is yellowish-green and you can leave an indent when you push on it. Then the hull will come off easily.

After removing hull, you have to wash the nuts in pails, vigorously agitaing the water/nut mixture to remove all debris. Usually need to do this 2-3 times per batch. Then spread nuts(still in shell) out on a screen to dry for a few days(away from squirrels, they LOVE them). Then put them in a cool, dry place to 'cure' for 4-6 weeks minimum.

Then, try and crack the shell open without crushing it to smithereens. The shells are HARD. Preferred method is to use a vice. I kid you not.

It's time consuming, but so worth it. They are much stronger flavor than the store walnuts(English variety).

Oh yeah, and the hulls dye your hands and clothes black if you aren't wearing gloves. Always wear gloves. And Black Walnut is toxic to some animals and plants. Can't dispose of hulls and tainted water in any stream or lake, will kill the fish. Can't put it in the compost or garden, will kill the plants. Earthworms apparently don't do well with it either.

But they are oh-so-good. Especially, in ice cream, cookies, cakes, etc. 😍

We have 6 black walnut trees in our backyard (the BF and I's house in NY) and we despise picking them up every time we mow. What a pain they are!

My toxicology prof must have done a good job. All I can think is laminitis in horses when I hear black walnut...

👍 Juglans is very toxic, but not to humans.

Reading notes about cattle, watching season 1 of 30 Rock, and thinking I want a steak and frozen yogurt.

I am having a massive chocolate craving right now, but I don't have any chocolate...

I think a quick trip to the store might be in order.

👍

Do it!

Chemistry...always chemistry. Still need to write up Results and Discussion, and then do the entirety of my take-home test.

But where are the Staedtlers?

I'm a persistent snacker when I study. Inevitably, I ingest a lot of sour patch kids. But I have some healthy alternatives these days.

And I'm not much for dried fruit, generally, but these:

are both so so amazing. Yum.

I told you, I need more! And I have that big bag of pistachios, lol. Eat them while I study all the time! 😎

Checking over my answers for this biochem take-home exam before I submit it...this is going to take a while. 🙄

Resting my ankle. Fell down the stairs and it really hurts. 🙁

My tea tastes really bad. I wanted the cherry tea, but it was decaf and I really need caffeine right now so I stuck a chai in with it. It.....didn't turn out that great lol

Abs, that sounds really gross.

Headed home and going to study. Thinking I should go to the gym.

I literally have done nothing all day. Laid on the couch and watched Grey's Anatomy and cuddled my kitty. Oh well!

Thinking I must have frontal lobe damage. Not so much because after I got home I went for a 5 mile run in the dark in the rain; but because I let a pair of Tastykake cream filled butterscotch krimpets sit on my coffee table for almost an hour. I just put them back in the box! :whoa:

Listening to my space heater heating up, hoping it will keep my room warm enough to prevent hypothermia tonight :scared: (not a scared face- a blue, hypothermic shivering face!) since it's started to get pretty darn cold at nights up here. Landlord took the furnace for maintenance, should be back Friday but I'm looking at a chilly couple of nights. Planning to hole up in bed with my new ultra thick wool socks suited for -40 temps, flannel PJ pants and my public health notes. Exam tomorrow, ack!

I have a sofa if it gets too cold!

Just filled out my absentee ballot so it's all ready to mail tomorrow. 😀

Trying to sign up for next semester classes and the stupid enrollment system is only letting me sign up for one class. All the others are not working. ARG.

Class scheduling is the WORST. I always have terrible luck with it. Well, last time wasn't too bad, but then housing was a nightmare...🙄
