I am planing to do some away electives in NY however I live in NJ and was planning on commuting to NYC. The commute would be at least an hour each way. my question is do you think it's possible to commute or do you guys start so early that I would have to leave my house at 4am or earlier to be on time. Also what time do you usually leave the hospital? Would I even have enough time to get like 6 hours of sleep a night if I had to commute an hour each way?

thanks for your replies.

My typical non-call day is from 6am-4pm. I wake up a 5am and try to be asleep by 9:30pm which gets me about 7 1/2 hrs on a non call day. That may seem like a lot, but when you're losing a night of sleep q4-6 days, you may find yourself needing more than just 6 hrs to get by.

For you to be at work at 6am, you would need to leave at 5am. is the transportation near you reliably running at that time in the morning if your taking public transport? is it safe at that time in the morning? (you might feel differently depending if you're a guy or girl). i know on cardiac rotations, the residents are typically coming in much earlier, near 5am. i personally can't imagine a one hour commute as a resident and think circumstances would have to be pretty extraordinary before that would be worthwhile.

Thanks for your reply. Are you doing your residency in NYC? 6 to 4 isn't bad at all. Yes there is relaiable public transport into the City and depending on where the hospital is it might take me 40min to get there. I would of course move into the city if I matched at a hospital in NYC, but this is a one month elective and I don't feel like finiding a place to stay for a month or renting a hotel room.

anyone else?

I go to a school in the city. My experience on my gas rotations was cases started at 7:30. As an MS3/4 you dont really need to be there to set up the rooms (I came a few times and all it did was cause confusion) so if you are by the ORs in scrubs by 7/7:15 that is totally fine. Between 3 and 5 I was usually told to go home as there was no further point in me being there but obviously that is attending dependant; I can't imagine needing to be there much past 5 though.

PM me if you have specific questions. If you don't have a rotation set up yet I would get a move on, I think most of them are pretty booked.

Thanks a lot, I'll be scheduling aways for next year in 2 weeks. Which hospital did you do your gas rotation if you don't me asking.
