What area of OT would you like to work in, and what influenced this?
No particular reason - just wondering :)

Geriatrics, so far anyway :)

When I volunteered at the home for my prerequisite OT hours I loved being there. Interacting with the patients and the staff. I even made some good connections while I was there. But the patients were so awesome, they would talk to me about absolutely everything. Lots of interesting characters and stories. Every day there was interesting and I learned a lot, being there also solidified my desire to become an OT.

I only volunteered at a home, school and hand rehab center so I havent seen all the fields OT work it. It might change, but at this point I would love to work with the elderly.

Yourself?

You are seriously the only other person I've talked to who wants to do Geriatrics!

I LOVED shadowing at the nursing home. I did about 24 hours there, and it was my favorite place. Even in such a short time, I also felt really connected to the people living there and I still think about them, even though I shadowed way back in October...

I also shadowed in ICU, kids' clinic, adult outpatient, nursing home, and on the pulmonary floor of the hospital, but not even the kids' clinic was as fun as the nursing home! haha

I actually want to eventually do equine-assisted therapy, but I need 3 years of experience before getting certified for that, so I want to apply to some sort of long-term care for at least those 3 years.

Have you been accepted to a program?

List of area Im considering
Neurorehabilitation: Spinal Cord injury, Tramatic brain injury etc.
hand therapy: become a brachial plexus specialist.
peds: If i decide peds will probably work in the NICU or Early intervention any age above that is out.

MOTStudent- Lol, yea I would love to get into geriatrics.

Wow equine therapy that sounds very interesting. You sure got your bases covered when you shadowed, I wish I did more of a broad range when I shadowed but I was having a hard time finding volunteer/shadowing opportunities in my area when it came to hospitals.

I applied to Kean, Seton Hall, NYU and Columbia. I already received a rejection letter from Kean. It was a big dissapointment. The reason why was rejected was that I had a B- in intro to psych, but I thought it wouldn't matter since my higher level psych courses were A's. Thank God it was the only school that asked for Intro to Psychology, my pre-req GPA is higher for the other schools. I also thought they should've taken in to account that I was 17 when I took that class. I curse youthful indiscretions! I don't blame them though, they had very limited spots.

caduceus27- Interesting settings, I'd be a little afraid with early intervention in the NICU. Newly born babies always look so fragile to me. I also like pediatrics but more in a school setting when they're 4 and up. Good luck in getting in your desired fields :)

I would love to work with kids mostly in the school settings, or in an outpatient clinic.

After many years working in special ed, I am not looking to work in schools. I'd also love to do NICU or EI in homes, but I am so interested in neuro, upper extremity therapy, and who knows what else at this point. Is anyone else worried about working in a particular setting when you get out of school and then having trouble moving to a different setting because you don't have the proper experience? In other words, getting pigeon-holed into one practice area?

I've thought about getting 'pigeon holed' as you put it if I do go into geriatrics and some ten years down the road i feel the urge to switch settings. I'm thinking there may be seminars one attends, kind of like a refresh course. I could be wrong. I have that worry sometimes though.

I am hoping to get into the SC rehab clinic or the geriatrics rehab clinic at the VA.
