I'm now a junior with a 2.9 gpa overall. This semester I will prolly land all A's except for my physical chemistry class which is ridiculous, I expect a C or higher in that. Im a chemistry major with a minor in Biochem. I would like to apply to Dental school next year, but I feel that with my GPA, my chances won't be very good. What are my options after I graduate to improve my GPA, also, does it look like I have a shot for next year if I apply?

How's your science GPA? Considering the difficulty of the curriculum you chose, I honestly think you've got a shot depending on how much you've done as far as dental shadowing/experience and extra curriculars. If you did well in your pre-req courses, that helps a lot too.

You might think about going for a Masters after you graduate, but I don't think it'd be a waste of time for you to apply now.

THanks for the quick response, My pre req's are not terrible, but not great. I have mostly B's, the only C+ I have are in 1 semester of Orgo, and one semester of intro Bio 2. Right now I volunteer at a local hospital, but plan on shadowing this summer. I think I made a mistake by choosing a hard major since the classes aren't getting any easier.

A 2.9 won't even get you into clown school, or will it? Well, it'll be extremely difficult x5 to get into Dentschool for you so ways to beef up your resume is by busting out a masters program with a 4.0 and a 21+AA on the Dee ats

Yea, unless you're URM w/ extracurriculars stacked to the ceilingand decent DATS you're gonna be in for a rough time. I got <3.0 but in past 5 yrs got 3.8+ but still twiddling thumbs.

Chemistry is not an easy major, but if you think you made a "mistake by choosing a hard major since the classes aren't getting any easier" you may want to reconsider dentistry unless you feel that ds courses are likely to get easier.

You'll have a rough time if your pre-req grades are consistent with your overall GPA. Finish out strong in undergrad and seriously consider doing a postbac. And definitely study up and do well on the DAT.

I think this is a good point. I haven't started yet, but I've seen and been reassured that the dental school curriculum (like any doctoral program) is certainly intense.

You still have 1 more year to go. Don't put your head down yet. Think about retaking some of the courses you didn't do so good on. That will pull your GPA up a little bit, and work hard during your last year so you can show school an upward trend in grades. A 3.0 GPA isn't competitive anymore.
