Hey,
I'm a third year interested in psych, family and EM. My question is, I'm a pretty avg student, somewhere in the middle third of my class, Step 1/210 and not involved. What do I need to do in order to have a decent chance in EM. I was a treasurer in one of our organizations so far, but that's about it. And I hate research. Any suggestions?

Have you talked to your school's EM advisor? If you don't have one, get one through SAEM (online advisor). Good luck

Let's make this a game of hangman, shall we:

Fa_ _ _ Mc_ _ _ _ _ PA _ _ _

I'll take a "y"

Fa_ _ y McFa _ _ y Pa _ _ _

Who's next...

Unfortunately tonight's puzzle has only 1 n, so...

Guess this is meant to be sarcastic. Don't know what it means, but thanks for your help.

Yes, sarcastic indeed.

F...M...P (you'll soon find out what that stands for at the conclusion of the hang-man game) is an inside joke for the forum. Whenever someone ask about scores, matching, grades, pay...the standard reply is Fatty...(oops, almost gave the puzzle away).

It is someone's way of saying "I've answered this a million times and don't wish to answer it again, please search for the answer". Don't take it personally, and as you see, others usually come in and fill in the gaps for the original question (or interject derivatives of FMP and such, if you're lucky, you'll get a "some dude" response...that's an honor).

Hi. After reading the attached pdf file, it seems like MANY people have couple publications and were fairly heavily involved in research. Is doing research during med school almost expected when going into EM?

p.s. I'm only an MS1.

No, but it can help a weak application. Those with low scores and grades should seriously consider research as a selling point for the application.

ooh ooh give me an L! and then an R!

BTW - that is supposed to be a head and a neck...

Fa_ _ y McFa _ _ y Pan _ _

L,R

Thanks Iatros. Fatty McFatty Pants. Ok, I will look at the FAQ's and see about some research. I do have a weak application. And thanks scout for that link. I have see it before somewhere. Anyway, thanks all for the informative comments.

Is this the first time anyone has Fatty McFatty Pants their own question?

I am now in tears! I cannot stop laughing! The self-Fatty has been done!

Yeah, you could interpret it as that. But I think it has morphed. The folks who have been on this forum for 3-4 years can correct me, but I think the history goes like this

1. Two members get in a an argument about what happened at a dinner for interview applicants at a residency. One thinks the other insulted his PD's weight. They go on for a couple of pages of insults and anger.
2. A careful reading of the record suggests that no original insult was intended however.
3. After that FMP became a comment that suggested that somebody was trolling and should just shut up.
4. It then became a way to say that a thread was exhausted and people should stop posting.
5. What you said.

More senior folks like App, Quinn and Spyder can tell me if I got it wrong.

It was about my PD, but not specifically - it was as if someone said it about my PD, not actually - but I wasn't the originator.

Thanks for the elaboration/clarification 👍

Choco-

As you can tell, most "EMers" have a "good" sense of humor. Atleast, we're a bit twisted, but that's ok.

You dont' have to be a "superstar" to get into Em. Shoot. I graduated high school with a 2.8. Just kick butt on your 3rd year rotations, keep your options open, spend some time down in the ED, maybe pick an elective early in the 4th year, and apply. There's not much you can do NOW as an M3 to really amp up your application (I wouldnt' worry about no research), just do well on your tests/rotations, if you're still interested in M4 year, apply, and see whatcha get. But you should get a better idea of what EM really is about by spending some time in the ED. Maybe on a weekend you have off or when your'e down in the ED for a consult, kind of hang out a bit....

So, basically, you don't "need" to do anything else besides really understanding what EM is about, do an EM rotation, see if its for you, then apply!

What? You graduated high school? I knew there were some overachievers lurking in this thread....
