I start my CA-1 year in July, and now I feel like I know medicine, but I truly know nothing about surgery. Is there a book that you would advise reading on a case specific basis during CA-1 year so that I will understand the surgical techniques?

Learn to taylor your anesthetic so when the drapes come down you've got the tube out with a mask on a patent airway. This makes the type of surgery performed irrelevant.

Achieve this and you'll prosper.

I don't start CA-1 for another year but I think the book you're thinking of is:

Anesthesiologists Manual Of Surgical Procedures
Author: Jaffe, Richard A.; Author: Samuels, Stanley I.

My program provides the CA-1's with this book at the beginning of the year. Maybe check with your program director?

I'll second this book, and not just because it's written by Stanford guys. It gives a little background on a variety of procedures (written by Stanford surgeons) and then discusses the Stanford-standard for the anesthetic. I found it tremendously useful during my first few months when I didn't know what to expect about the various surgical procedures.

any other books that are good to glance through before surgery? i guess it doesnt even have to be books, CDs? internet sources? whatever.

Thanks
