Hey guys, I am a long time reader, first time poster. I just wanted to give you my stats and ask you HONESTLY what you think my chances are to getting in. This is the second year i have applied.
Currenly, I am finishing my 4th year Biology degree. Up to date, I have a 2.89 BCP and a 3.1 overal GPA.
I am writing my DAT again in November ( I am a Canadian Student).
I have about 30 hours in dental experience and some volunteer work.
I have applied to NYU, VCU, Las Vegas, UCSF, Howard, Tufts, Loma Linda, Boston and Meharry.
I sent in my application in the end of August.
SO FAR, I have got rejected from UCSF and from Loma Linda, but no inteviews.

What are my chances, if any? Please be honest. Thanks so much.

I guess nobody really know about your chance.

But why not take another dat exam. I know it is stressful...

But what r u gonna loose from taking another shot...

Do not feel discouraged about the stats in SDN....

Be yourself and show yourself that you can do it!!!!!!!!

Its a battle against yourself at this stage not against other sdners...

That is what I believe...

U got nothing to loose, so y not take another shot~~~

You will know by then if u can really get in or not....

that u have done your best...

Thank you..that is so encouraging..and insprining. so far it has been a struggle to get in, since dental in the last few years has gotten ever so competitive. Other then my DAT, what do you think about my stats otherwise?

You've asked for an honest opinion, so here it is: You're going to need a Masters degree with a good graduate GPA to get into dental school. With your stats the way they are, you have very little chance of getting into an American dental school and even less of being admitted to a Canadian one. If you're serious about dentistry, you can do it; it's just going to take a little more time and plenty of hard work.

thank you very much for your honest opinion...what if i do well on my dats in november, like maybe 20s across and have a really good semester this year in 4th year..i dont know how much that will change my gpa..what do you think?

I agree with the people above. First of all, if dentistry is for you, never give up! If your self-determination can overcome the temptations to be distracted by other options in your life, you'll be where you desire to be before you know it. Looking at your stats, I do think that you might need something like Master's degree in some sort of science and do well in it. And as much as possible, try to bring your BCP gpa up to at least 3.0. Finally, try to get more like 21~22 across the board since getting into dental school is being increasingly competitive. But again, if you believe dentistry is your dream, never quit and persist on!

I'll be honest...

basically, the only info you've given us is that you have a pretty low GPA (bad), about 30hours shadowing (not too great), and no DAT scores yet. From what I know so far, you have almost no chance of getting in this cycle unless you do amazing on your DATs. Definitely do a post-bac if you don't get in this year, and you should probably study harder than everyone else before taking the DAT.

You'll eventually get in, just don't give up

if you are applying for this cycle, i say your chances are pretty slim
even if you get 20s all across because some schools already sent out
all of the invitation letters for the class and pretty soon will be sending
invitation for alternate pools. There are some schools that will still
interview late in the cycle but i doubt it with those gpa right now.
If you are applying for the next cycle, then you should improve your gpa
and like you said, study for dat hard and nail it. Applying early in the cycle
is really important in the admission process for many schools so make
sure you apply early on top of all things and NEVER lose hope!!!
if you are determined and put your heart into it then you'll be fine!
good luck~🙂

to be honest, you're sort of late. but, you might still have a chance. First off, never ever apply to state schools (UCSF etc.). They hardly take any US out of state students, let alone canadians (myself included🙂 ).

if you can pull of a stellar dat score, you might be able to get an interview at nyu, i think. if you had applied to columbia, thye might have invited you, too. i know this from past experience; a friend of mine applied to columbia and nyu in november, and his dat scores werent out till Jan. he got into nyu, and was waitlisted at columbia. but, his gpa was in the high range.

plus, there are other factors that come into play; your gpa variations, your undergrad instituion (if youre a canadian, youre better off applying as a uoft student😛 ) etc.

lastly, there are many people out there without interviews. so, dont stress. just wait and be patient.😀

with all due respect, you're a second time applicant without the plums to straight-up ask the admissions committees that denied you the first time around (assuming you haven't otherwise you really wouldn't need to ask us). Sack up and ask the adcomm people why you didn't make the cut. figure out what you need to do and do it.

Given your non-competitive BCP GPA, I would expect them to tell you that you need to show your commitment to science and smash the DAT test. If I were a dean of admissions I would tell you that your only hope is to get 20's across the board. Your poor BCP GPA tells them you are risky from a "pay 4 years of tuition" perspective. They need to believe you can finish dental school...remember it's a business...they are doing this to take your money as well as educate you. They want people they have confidence can finish...and dental school will be 20+ credits a term of nothing but science. Your BCP is a HUGE red flag that is telling them you can't hack it.

You asked for honesty.

with ur gpa, u need 23+s. also, get more volunteer experience. try to go to grad school too. get a 4.0 there. gl!

Hi,
I honestly can feel your pain because I have a >3.0 BCP. I have gotten one interview, and I submitted my app July 15th, and it was completed around the end of September.

I don't honestly know how I got that interview, but I think they were looking at my work outside my scores (obviously, since my scores blow).

Hopefully your other activities showed that you have a sincere interest in dentistry because 30 hours does not seem enough.

I know that my chances for this cycle is bleak, but that is why I am preparing for a post-bacc degree if I don't get in this cycle.

Personally, I keep my expectations low, and have back-up plans always in mind.

I'm sure that eventually you will get in somewhere (I have some faith in the system) if you truly show perseverence for dentistry.

Good luck! :luck:

Don't schools stand to make 2x or 3x the amount of money off one seat than if they accepted an American. Why don't they?
