I keep reading on school websites that that require 1 year general chem, 1 year organic chem, 1 year physics and 2 years bio.... I know 1 year of the Bio is General (Cell and Molecular) but what is the second year all about? If you're not a bio major, what should you fulfill those requirements with?

Also, what is the best prep course for the DAT? I keep hearing Kaplan sucks but I hear about non competitors...

Are there any websites that have stats of under grad major vs. acceptance?

Please help this lost Pre-dent...

Jen

That was great...

Anybody know why there is a 2 year requirement for Biology? I don't understand. There is 1 year of General Bio and what is the second year?

Thanks,
Jen

I don't know of ANY dental schools that require two years of bio.

Now, I don't now everything, but I do not that this is NOT the norm for dental schools.

Most schools require 8 credit hours + labs of the 4 basic requirements: Bio, Inorganic Chem, Organicm Chem, and Physics.

8 credit hours = 2 semesters or two courses (with labs). Essentially this breaks down to a total of 8 classes that are called "pre-reqs".

So, which school are you referring to that requires 2 YEARS? I was an English major, so I was in the same boat you were when applying.

To answer your questions:

If a particular schools wants 2 years of biology, which i have not seen before, then you can take two semesters of biology, then two of the following: anatomy, physiology, microbio, genetics, embryology, botony, marine bio....cant think of any more...

I think that Kaplan is good, but it is overpriced. If you are a dedicated and disciplined students you can self-study. In fact, some of the highest scorers have done this. Get the Topscore software.

There is indeed a website with GPA/DAT info...

Also, take a look at last years STATS thread. You can see peoples stats and where they got interviews/acceptances, very helpful.

Good luck, and post any other questions you may have...

BTW, although Kaplan is overpriced, it is a VERY helpful class. I just wanted to clearify that. They give you alot of material to work with. You can always buy the "Big Blue Book" from any bookstore, but you'll miss some supplementary stuff Kaplan gives. Personally, I think $1k is nothing in the long run and any help you can get is good. I took the class and dont regret it one bit!

Jennifer,

UT San Antonio is now the first school I know of that requires two years of biology. Thanks for the link.

To answer your question: you can fulfill that with most ANY bio class. Try anatomy, histology, immunology, genetics, etc.

The list goes on and on.

Actually, like Gavin, I was surprised to see that some schools require 4 semesters of Biology including U of P, U of Louisville, U of Missouri @ Kansas City, I belive Indiana (not sure), UT Houston, and Baylor requires one more semester in addition to the normal sequence of Bio 1&2. I'm planning on taking Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology in addition to the regular Bio 1 and 2 to supplement these additional requirements. Good luck!

THIS LINK gives Indiana's prereqs. For those two lazy to bother, the biology portion looks like this:

Biology/zoology: 8 hours, lecture + lab
Anatomy: 4 hours, lecture + lab
Physiology: 3 hours, no lab required
Biochemistry: 3 hours, no lab required

Before writing the last post, I double checked all the school's websites to make sure on the Biology requirements, but like I had mentioned to you in the past, Indiana's website is one example of how hard is to navigate and find any information. It wasn't that I was "lazy" to not double check, in fact I did try, but again, since the information wasn't readily accessible (as it is in many other dental school websites) I didn't continue seeking it out. Out of all the schools' websites (about 16) that I visited, I found Indiana the most challenging when searching admission's requirements. BTW, thanks for the link.

Right, I didn't mean to imply that you were actually lazy. I'll be the first to admit that IUSD's website is crap to navigate. Sorry 😀

UOP requires 4 semesters of bio classes too.
