What happens to cheaters?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
most cheaters end up becoming doctors...
i know that the most they get for a first offense is a "slap on the wrist" a "don't do this again or else" verbal slap

During the second Bio exam here at NYU dental a person was caught cheating and was dismissed from the class.

Yup, got booted out of the program and can never return.

Aren't lab partners supposed to help each other on papers? My lab partner and I always turned in very similar stuff, just put in our words, and even if somebody noticed it, I don't think it would have been considered "cheating". Laziness maybe.

I don't know the exact circumstances here, but almost being expelled seems a little severe.

for one of my lab classes, we were encouraged to work together with our partners. So, of course, our labs would be basically the same thing, which makes sense. So, we do this for an entire year (it was a two semester lab). No one brings up anything the entire first semester. We get an OK grade in the class.
Then, the last day of classes for the second semester, we're called into the dept head's office and accused of cheating. WTF...had they not been reading the labs before? I guess we finally drilled it into their heads that we just worked on the labs together and hadn't cheated. they made us do a couple of the labs over, which sucked since it was the end of the semester, but in the end we didn't get called in for academic dishonesty or anything

I was so mad that they had waited till the very end to bring it up

A friend of mine got busted for helping someone plagerize their homework. It was a calculus assignment which my friend worked out on his own, but made the mistake of letting someone else look at it so that they could figure out what to do. But the other guy ended up copying it verbatim, and the policy here is that the person who is copied is just as guilty as the one who copied. The professor busted both guys and told them that they were getting F's for the semester and that they would be reported to the Dean of Students for further action. However, after letting these guys stew for a few days, the professor called them in and decided to let them both go with a zero on the assignment and just leave it at that. I thought that was really cool of the professor. He realized that freshmen are stupid and they make stupid decisions, so he let them suffer for a few days and then let them off relatively lightly, and the lesson is learned by the parties involved.

I agree. I think that was a very effective and fair course of action by the professor. I don't think a naive freshman should have their future dreams ruined because they gave their homework to a friend (in hopes that they would use it correctly as a means of checking their own work) without knowing that the friend was too lazy/dumb to do the hw on their own and had to resort to cheating. However, if a junior or senior did this...that's when questions have to be raised. I know my school is VERY unforgiving when it comes to these things.

There were these rich siblings who paid "tutors" to do the school work for them. They basically spent a lot of time doing ECs while their "tutors" did a lot of the work. At times, the "tutors" would take the exams for the girl. The girl used to be one of my roommates. I didn't know her very well. Don't keep in touch with her.

It's a dog-eat-dog world.

So what happened to the siblings? Are they in med school now?

didnt know that there were even unethical tutors...

To tell u the truth from what I have seen, cheating never really does catch up with people. I have seen a lot of cheaters get into good schools.

I hope that when I get to medical school--wherever I go-- I won't have to run into a lot of gunners or whatever you call them.
Be very careful about your choice of schools, then.

birds poop on them from all their bad karma.

Even though the girl and I shared some of the classes, I don't think she was aiming for medical school. I think it was either law or business.

The lesson is that there are very good cheaters out there that get away. I recently went to U of T (U of Toronto) and saw ads advertising "professionals" writing essays or selling essays. I wouldn't be suprised if some students bought the essays or paraphrased those essays to avoid being caught.

U agree...and have seen the same thing as well...also people usually get caught and only get a 0 for the assignment..but can still get an ok grade in the course and nothing goes on the transcript...or file unless they are caught again...

Oh, well Business school, that's different you're supposed to cheat in business

Actually, I know two cheaters in my postbacc classes. One is at Stony Brook and the other is now at Cornell so I guess, no, alot of cheaters do not get caught.

I get a little burned up when I think about that. It doesn't seem fair, but then I think cheaters have really polished their skills to do it well. These students were not 19 but more like 30, so you figure this was their well developed choice.

I know of this guy who went to York University (North York, Ontario) who bought one of those 'professional essays' for his course. He always did this, however in one of these occasions his prof caught him BECAUSE some other guy in the class did the exact same thing and had the EXACT same essay. The prof. confronted both students (who didn't know each other) and the guy I know confessed and felt bad. He got an F in the course, and it lowered his GPA, however his GPA was already 'not so great' and he wasn't planning on any graduate schools..... at least his folks have $$$$$ ..... he is now working at one of his father's stores selling carpets.[
