I will just say this simply.

You have misplaced priorities.

You are letting what someone else thinks dictate a decision in your life. You say you think you will regret not going to a top school, but the reason for this is because your godfather went to a better one. So while this might sound like an internal issue, it was created by an external force.

The sooner you get over things like this the happier a person you will be. And this goes for every aspect of life.

Didn't say it with particular schools in mind. I guess what makes a school "good" is a matter of opinion. But like someone said above, MD is MD and I tend to agree. I'll leave the school research to you 😉

Simple response: If you don't want to go don't apply.

Just be aware applying to medical school really is a crapshoot.
Even if you word your essays well, some schools where you are slightly above to even absurdly above the averages, are the same ones that can slap you with a rejection letter two weeks after a secondary.

I wouldn't be surprised if the application process consisted of setting up a minimum floor of grades/GPA, setting up a nice qualified applicants pile...then throwing it all in the air - and shooting at it with BB guns. Whichever has a hole through it gets the interview.

Point blank: Regardless of where you go to school, your godfather will always find a reason to make you feel like you're less than. People with a superiority complex rarely need a reason to make you feel like you're unworthy. You go to a top tier school, then get a mediocre step 1 score. He'll rub his near perfect score in your face. You want to be a Family Medicine Physician, he'll make you feel terrible because he's a surgeon. You get into a good residency, your godfather will talk about how amazing his residency program is compared to yours. You get a great job as an attending at a small practice, he'll toot his prestigious academic position as "the best job of all time."

At the end of the day, go to the school that fits you best. Apply to schools you're interested in, regardless of ranking. Do not let amazing schools with great programs that could really suit you and your long-term goals fall by the wayside because someone doesn't see its value. As you get older, you will come to understand that sometimes, when people belittle you, it has less to do with you and more to do with their own feelings of inadequacy. Laugh and live on. Or you'll spend your entire life being ruled by someone else. And being a prisoner of someone else's feelings, thoughts, and emotions is no fun.

I have very good grades. I go to a well known good state school and as long as I do well on my MCAT there is no reason why I won't be able to get into a few medical schools (I am assuming state schools). However, deep down, idk if its because I was subjected to my godfather's bravado of the top tier schools and med school he graduated from that has always made me really want to go to a top medical school. I honestly feel at this point that I would not be happy going to a school not ranked in the top 25 maybe top 35. Yes my dream has always been to be a doctor, but I want the degree from the top school to get him to stop acting like he is better than anyone else. Would it be bad if I don't get into the school I want to go to say UPenn for example to take a year do what I can to make my application better (maybe getting higher mcat scores) and applying the following year even if I get a medical school acceptance.

Your goal should actually be to get into a top residency. Most residency+fellowship tracks take longer than medical school alone, so where you go for residency is a better indicator of your capabilities. Although getting into a top 25-35 med school is great, it means nothing if you cant get into the specialty/residency of your dream. Think of it: you can get into any residency from any school. You could go to harvard, screw up and land in a primary care residency in the middle of idaho. OR you could go to a midtier school, kill the steps and become a renowned ortho surgeon.

Reminds me of a friend I have 4.0 33+ who only applied to top 10 schools because he felt he had to go there... then reapplied to top 20 schools.... then reapplied a third time to top 50 schools and finally got in... I'm sure it was a very humbling experience.

No matter how great you are or think you are, there are thousands out there that are greater.

Dropping an acceptance for a reapp to try and get into a top-tier school however is foolish.

Best advice here. Shoot for the stars, but don't be a fool.

If you want to only go to a prestigious school and want to go into medicine as strongly as you claim you do, apply to only prestigious schools year after year until either you get accepted or your bank account reads empty. No point in even applying to non-top tier schools if you'll live with regret and a bad taste in your mouth the rest of your life. That's a poor way to be forced to lead life.

P.S. - the best physicians do NOT solely attend the best medical schools. Choosing a surgeon based on pedigree is asinine. I would choose my surgeon based on how successful they are at surgery, even if they went to bum-f medical school. I'll take a "poor trained" expert surgeon over an "excellently trained" fumbling Dr. Hodad any and every day. Intelligence and pedigree =/= doctoring ability, period.

That reason isn't even genuine regardless of how you feel it is. You're being motivated by what someone else did rather than developing your own passion in that field.

Genuine reasons? really your questioning my motivations? My father is a physician/surgeon, my mother a nurse. I have three siblings but I am the only one out of the children going into medicine since we have been discouraged throughout my entire life. I know more about the medical establishment and current medical issues then all premed/med students and even some doctors i know. You don't understand what it feels like when somebody you look up to in your life (godfather) just tries to make it known that you will never measure up and yes regardless of what you think people do look at your CV and will choose to go or not to go to you based on your credentials. My gf just had a surgery done and the deciding factor was the schools he was educated at and she couldn't have been happier with the decision.

Doesn't matter. Saying you're pursuing medicine because of your family background or what your godfather did etc isn't valid.

Get a new avatar pic, get a gf and get a life while your at it.

I seriously disagree with your motivations and the rude way you responded to some of the other people on this forum, but here's my two cents anyway:

Don't apply to schools you don't want to attend! If you want to take a gap year and work on your credentials first or just have some meaningful experience, go for it, but don't turn down an acceptance in the hopes of getting a better one because, quite honestly, you may not. I'm not saying anything bad about your ability to do well on your MCAT or anything like that, just that you need to be honest with yourself.

Also, if you happen upon a school that you fall in love with but isn't the most prestigious one out there, apply! If you know you'd be happy there and satisfied with your education, that's what is important. You can convince your godfather of that later.
