what would the schools do when they received these withdrawals and you try to explain to them later on?

I crap you not, my friend from Canada just found out recently about his roommate hijacking his email account.
Because there are only a few Canadian schools, most students would apply to the same schools.
My friend's roommate also applied to the same school. They both interviewed there but I guess the roommate is jealous of my friend, he sneaked into my friend's room, used his email account, sent a withdrawal letter to the school.
My friend did not even realize about that email until recently he found was looking for a document he sent to his PI in his "SENT" box.

that is just HORRIBLE!

thats sick... i guess theyre not roommates anymore!

I think the schools would give you the benefit of the doubt. It's not like they throw your file into the incinerator when you withdraw...

How does he know his roommate did it? Premeds at some schools totally suck, glad I don't go there.

Is this what people refer to as "gunnerism"? 😆

i believe so. not looking forward to ppl like that in medschool. Had no idea ab the term until application process began.

Oh my goodness... I am still in shock and find it hard to believe this. Please confirm if this is true. That is just plan wickedness. I am a firm believer of "what goes around comes around". Just wait and see what happens to the roommate that did that. Makes me wonder..How many premeds out there are capable of doing such heinous act? I will not be surprised if the number is pretty high.

Moral of story: Never trust anyone....Personally, I follow this rule always...I try not to expect much from people, because the heart of men is wicked.

he is not on SDN, hes considering legal actions

I can't imagine people doing that to me. At least I hope the school would inform me about my withdrawal or new status change before I move to the city and the school goes, "I thought you withdrew?"

I mean, how hard is it that if someone wants to screw your life badly and send snail-mail letters to the schools they know that you are planning to attend?

Dear admission officers,
I decided not to attend

And this is why you shouldn't set Firefox or IE to auto-login into your important email account or share the password with anyone.

Email accounts aren't magically hijacked.

Well get him on SDn so he can share his story with us 🙂 sounds like a fascinating story. I would love to know what the bad roommate has to say.

There will be blood.

Considering the mentality of a lot of pre-meds, I can't say I'm surprised in any way by this story.

How bout when all your friends conspire to cheat in every exam since freshman year? And i decided to opt out and say no and ended up with a 2.66gpa while they had 3.4s+.

Why would you be friends with people like that?

Isolated story man! We might be competitive but most of us are ethical. From the story, its clear that the roommate is few fries short of a happy meal. His actions are not only immoral, but also just... dumb. You can't exactly hide sent email.

Wow. That's the most Machiavellian thing I've ever heard of in the pre-med/medical student world.

Sorry to break this to you but you didn't get 2.66 because you didn't conspire to cheat. You got it because others are smarter/study harder. 99.9% of the people with 3.4+ GPAs never cheated.

why didnt the roommate just delete the sent mail? that's what i usually do when i send fake withdrawals. 😛

btw, i was kidding. i dont do that...

Wrong. I think this is a personal answer everyone should answer deep down....how many premeds will remain ethical behind closed doors?I dont think I will be quick to say this is an isolated situation...If anything, it is a shame that someone can do such crazy act. I think this just goes to show that there are some premeds that are wicked enough to do that...I don't honestly think many people are ethical behind closed doors (especially not premeds!!!!!!).....while I know must people will claim otherwise, I know deep down this is not true..I am just really saddened by this story. Very disturbing!

Sorry to disappoint you but the hearts of men are good.

Anyone who believes in what goes around comes around only does good because "it comes around" and therefore is not really good. You are a good person because a good person is the right thing to be. You are looking for excuses for yourself because you can't handle the fact that bad things happen. The truth is, to live in this world, you need to come to understand that bad things will and always will happen and it doesn't mean you should curl up into a ball. It means you get over it and keep living a good life.

I heard these wise words from someone on SDN: "Get over yourself, Hamlet."

Give people some more faith. People aren't bad. They're just deprived. It's obvious how easy it is to be misled or become "bad" but the fact is not everyone has as strong a will power as others do. I have patience though and I can wait for people to attain it. People that can't get this strong will power are just weak and need some time.

Don't get me wrong. People with strong will powers can get tempted too, we're all human.
I believe Samuel L. Jackson says it best:
"Hamburgers! The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast. What kind of hamburgers? "

No wait, not that one. It's this:
"There's a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you. I been sayin' that **** for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ***. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a mother****er before you popped a cap in his ***. But I saw some **** this mornin' made me think twice. Now I'm thinkin': it could mean you're the evil man. And I'm the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here, he's the shepherd protecting my righteous *** in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you're the righteous man and I'm the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that. But that **** ain't the truth. The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepherd. "

About the roommate, he is probably just a douchebag but give him some time. The fact that you got into med school should make you pretty happy and I'm sure there are ways around this situation. Besides, it's better than getting shot in the face.

I'm pretty sure my roommate sent nasty letters in my names to the adcoms at Penn, Vandy, Mich, Wisc, etc and THAT'S the real reason I was rejected from those schools. Of course there was the accidental rejections I got to.

That bastard. Well, nice to know none of this was my fault.

Thats disgusting! I am sorry to hear. Hope things work out for your friend

I am making a new email account with a super secret pwd and making sure no one knows about this account. This shall be super hush!!!!!

Those Canadians are pretty crafty. I like it. Some healthy competition like that is good for everybody (except the hijackee).

im just wondering how many other people out there just checked their "sent" folder in their email? I did. Must be paranoid.

If that happened to me and I couldn't get my spot back I would sue him for every penny he's worth. That's quite possibly the most wicked and evil of all things someone could do in this whole application process. I don't even believe it's real.

Which is probably not a heck of a lot. In the U.S., he'd also be criminally liable for making unauthorized access to a computer system in that manner.

Dude,
Are you insinuating that I do good only because "it comes around" and therefore I am not good.?

I am just going to ignore that statement. All I was just trying to do was to express how unbelievable I find it for someone to commit such act. By the way, if you want to go all biblical on me.... "The heart of men is wicked"..(Jeremiah 17:9) ..The bible does not only say it is wicked but it says the heart of man is "desperately wicked"

I am by no means trying to turn this into a discussion, but it seem to me that you sound like someone capable of committing such act!....thats sick!

Having said that, I know not everyone is capable of doing such act, but it makes me wonder how many people are really capable of committing such act....Common guys!!!! ...How can someone be so brave and bold to hack into another persons email and send an unsolicited withdrawal email?...That is sick !

Uh, the quote was from Pulp Fiction.... I guess you've never watched it before. Give it a watch, it's pretty funny.

But I love discussing pointless things, it gets boring around here.

Why is it that you find this act unbelievable? Ever seen someone get shot before or killed? I haven't, but I know it happens. Your biblical quote does nothing, it's merely a quote with no significance whatsoever. How does this make me someone capable of committing this act? If you are by no means trying to turn this into a discussion, then you are by all means a troll. You're not even worth arguing with, I came here thinking it would be fun but now that I see what you're capable of, it'd probably be a waste of time.

Point is, s*** happens.

Hmmm... a good motivation for murder!!:beat:

wow, that's kind of crazy.

btw, which school is this. In the Canadian system, noone really sends withdrawls before acceptance. most ppl don't even have multiple interviews. Considering acceptances go out on may 15th in canada, i think the medschool might realize something was fishy. Hope everything goes well ...

just like in a bad thriller... wow just wow

if i were that medschool, i'd look closely into both ur friend and roommate. there is def. smth weird going on between the two. and honestly i'd be scared of both:scared::scared::scared:

Is there any proof, or is this conjecture? If he can prove it, then the schools will most likely understand and reject the roommate. If he can't, then how does he know it was the roommate?

Also, can you explain this sentence? It doesn't really make sense:
"My friend did not even realize about that email until recently he found was looking for a document he sent to his PI in his "SENT" box"

Honestly, I do feel sorry for the situation that is mentioned here. If this individual you speak of does such thing, he should never be considered for a service-oriented career. Quite frankly, he should be blackballed to the wazoo. Such an act is unexplicable!!

Stop feeding this thread, you're only generating hatred, which is completely useless. I can't believe you guys want to be doctors.

sorry, wasn't clear, was typing this when I was at work
basically, he was just looking in his SENT BOX for some other mails but he saw the sent mail with subject: withdrawal from application

ya, I see that it's weird for someone to "withdraw" from a Canadian school so maybe the school might suspect some foulplay here.

according to my friend, he is considering taking legal actions but he has yet heard back from the school. Maybe the school is still trying to investigate this little incidence.

and yes, I got paranoid (yes again) and checked my SENT box 2 times like some people here. haha

In case you're not feeling paranoid enough, keep in mind that it's very easy for someone to go into your sent box after sending an email and delete the evidence of it!

Oh man, how fitting to come across this thread. 2 nights ago, I had a dream that somebody withdrew me, and I don't even have a roommate!

That's such a terrible thing to happen. I hope that the schools understand and unwithdraw your friend.
