Hey,

What is meant with "equivalents" in this case:

"Even-chain fatty acids cannot produce new glucose, since they yield only acetyl-CoA equivalents".

Hey,

What is meant with "equivalents" in this case:

"Even-chain fatty acids cannot produce new glucose, since they yield only acetyl-CoA equivalents".

If I had to guess,

Since beta oxidation of even-chain = only acetyl CoAs are produced and
beta oxidation of odd-chain = one propionyl CoA and multiple acetyl CoAs are produced..

The propionyl CoA then can --> succinyl CoA which can --> pyruvate and then enter gluconeogenesis
However since even-chain fatty acids only make acetyl-CoA via the standard beta oxidation they cannot make new glucose

I think it just refers to moles of Acetyl-CoA. But "since they yield only acetyl-CoA equivalents" sounds better than "since they yield only moles of acetyl-CoA" they probably went with that.
