I am interested in finding out daily and call schedules of ob gyn residents and attendings... what time do you come in in the morning, what time do you leave, how often are you on call, etc. Please mention what year in training you are, and if you are part of a small or big program? Thank you!

I'd like to know the average number of hours worked per week during residency and after getting into private practice or being an attending.

Can anyone provide sample call schedules during residency? They did this in the psychiatry forum and it was actually pretty interesting to see how different hospitals function...

Your question is honestly too general to answer. The problem with OB/GYN is that it encompasses a very large area (OB, GYN, REI, ONC) and undoubtedly the "schedule" is extremely different depending on what rotation you are (as a resident) or what you practice (as an attending).

If you want a general overview: expect to work an average of 80 hours during residency which is an average of a couple of bad weeks and a couple of good weeks. In our residency, we generally had two weekend calls and several weekday calls (GYN) with a nightfloat team on for OB. Everyone got 1-2 weekends off per month. With respect to hours, you'd come in at 5:30-6 to round on OB/ONC, 6:30 on GYN services and generally were scheduled to stay till 5. However, this varies with rotations.

As a fellow/attending your schedule depends on your specialty/practice setting. If you have a specific one in mind (e.g. general OB/GYN, private practice), let us know and we'll see who can offer up some information.

Overall though, as mentioned in previous threads, it is a hard yet enjoyable residency, and afterward you can gear your practice to your priorities provided that you are flexible with how much money you want to make, and what setting you want to be in.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for taking the time to answer some of our questions. I would be interested in knowing about how many hours private practice general OB/GYNs work. I would want to make at least 250K per year and would not want to work more than about 50-55 hours/week. Would that be easy to do? The other specialty I'm interested in is psychiatry and for the extra hours that OB/GYNs have to work I'd have to be paid commensurately for the extra work.

It depends on where you want to live. 250K is a little high as a starting salary in larger cities, where you're looking more at 200-220K these days. A viable option that comes to mind is Kaiser Permanente or some of the much larger practices. You can definitely get over 200 and work around 50 hours a week.

Can you tell me more about kaiser Permanente and larger practices? I want to do primarily OB to start and move on from their. I am interested in learning more about the time, salary, and general lifestyle that goes with OB.

Thanks
