Is it even realistic for me to apply to dental school when all I can do in my chem classes is make C's???? I make A's in everything else but freak'n C's every chem class.....Hat's off to everybody that can pull better grades....3.5 gpa doesn't really show much when every chem class shows i'm a dumb@$$

Thats hilarious!! I've felt the same way. I don't know, I think Biology is just so different from Chemistry. I had a hard time at first in Chem, I got a C in my introduction to chemistry class. I'm starting to do better now though, I guess it's just a different way of thinking.

When you fill out an aadsas app. you will be prompted to list which courses you took in the science field. Therefore if you do well in ALL of your other bio classes your science gpa may at first glance not look all that bad. Sad as it is to say, that first glance is sometimes everything.

However, if you're attitude is that of defeat towards a single subject such as chemistry, then you may have to reconsider your commitment to the lengthy process involved in being accepted into dental school. I'm not trying to be rude but I also had a terrible time with general chemistry but I spent a lot of time at the library and with TAs and professors to improve my weakness. As much as it drove me nuts, you will also see that chemistry is the foundation from which organic chemistry builds on, which is further built upon in biochem and things learned there will continually pop up in physiology. Don't just accept C's, go the extra mile, its worth it.

If it makes you feel better I received C's in all my Gen Chem lectures. And a C in Ochem I. Although I managed an A in my Ochem II class. I also have all B's or B+'s in the labs. Chemistry is just a little harder for me. Im like you, I do better in my Bio classes.... Keep your head up. Good luck

I feel your pain man.....just buckle down and keep going.....not everybody is going to do good at everything......keep on truck'n...

you do have a chance. Just do extremely well on your GC and OC DAT scores to prove you know the stuff.

YOU HAVE A 3.5. You have a reason to apply, but as others said you can show you are on the DAT.
your in good shape.
good luck

Some C's won't hurt you at all. Buck up little camper!

Apply to 15 schools.

As long as you are doing good in your biology classes, I think you should be fine. 😛

Here is my situation...

This is my 3rd year applying to dental school and I need some advice....

I have a BS in Biology, and have taken every upper level bio class under the sun(Cell Biology, Genetics, Botany, Ecology, Histology, Parasitology, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology) except Biochemistry. I have also excelled in Art classes, being one of the reasons I want to be a dentist because it is an art form. My Overall GPA is a 3.47 and Science is 3.37 (not spectacular), but have never failed any class and only made one C in Genetics. DAT's are not great but not bad, 18/19/18 (15 in RC and QR,ouch!)and have gone through training in order to teach the organic chem portion of the DAT for Kaplan. I have taken the DAT 3 times and I hate standarized test, they make me really nervous; in each attempt I seem to mees up in one section which ends up blowing my AA) Since 06 when I graduated I have been worknig for an orthodonitst as an ortho assistant in which i have great LOR's and LOR's from 3 professors within my major. I have also shadowed general dentists, dental labs, and oral surgeons.....just to make sure this field is for me. I am currently tutoring students in biology at a local community college as a part-time job, and thinking about getting an associates in Radiation Protection Technology at a local community college. Since I only have a year left in this program, its not like I would be wasiting much time. I am guranteed a job with this program also in a nuclear power plant as a Radiation Protection Technician...I could then advance in the program because of my degree and end up being promoted to like a staff scientist. Should I pursue this job and take a break from dental school or get this degree and work towards a post-bac or take more undergrad classes afterwards. Applying each time is sooo expensive so I just dont want to make sure im not wasting time and money, but I am only 23 years old.

Any advice is greatly appreciated...thanks

Did this thread just get hijacked? 😕

Sorry, about that...

Went in the wrong thread...apologize!

Don't worry, I made Cs in GenChem, but scored a 25 in that section on the DAT. During interviews when asked to explain my sciGPA I often pointed that out and it seemed to work for me. Do the best you can (get a tutor maybe? some schools have free ugrad ones) in class and then rock the DAT.
