Hi, I am hoping to apply to Medical/DO Schools later this year for the 2013-2014 application cycle and I wanted to get some input on what MCAT score I would need to achieve to be considered a competitive applicant. I will be taking the MCAT in July 2013.

Information about myself:

Graduated from a UC in 2010
Overall GPA: 3.56
Science GPA: 3.52
(No apparent GPA trend)

URM Status (Hispanic, Mexican American)

Volunteer, Work Experience and other EC's

-TA at a Charter High School (2007)

-Volunteer in the ICU at a Hospital (2006/2007)

-Mentor Program (2007): Involved in a group clinical research project under the supervision of an ER physician. Gave an oral presentation at the end of the program.

-Minorities in the Sciences-type organization (2006-2010): Specifically I participated in the a Summer Research Program (2008) where I worked on a research project for a lab in the Bioengineering department over the summer of 2008. In 2009, I presented my project in a poster presentation at a statewide Research Symposium. I received a Special Merit Award at the conference for top poster presentation in my division.

-Pre-medical Honor Society(2006-2010): I was an active member in the pre-health honor society for about 4 years. I became both a national member and an officer in the club in 2008. I held the position of "Clinic Coordinator" from 2008 to 2010, in which I oversaw our program in partnership with an inner city free community clinic.

-Shadowed a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (Private practice- 2012-2013)

-Held 1-4 different jobs throughout the 2008-2010 academic years (at some points, holding down 3 jobs and full course loads at once due to my financial situation): 2 Lab Assistant positions, 1 position working as a Computer Support Specialist, and 1 position where I basically cleaned dead drosophila(Worst job ever!)

Research Experience

-Research Technician (2010-Current): I have worked at one of the top non-profit research institutions in the nation for the past 2.5 years.

-During my time at the institute, I have published in the Journal of Immunology (3rd author) and also in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) (2nd author).

Since I will be taking the MCAT in a few months, I wanted to get some input on what the minimum or average MCAT score I would need to considered a competitive candidate? (I say minimum because obviously an ideal score would be 36+ :D). Depending on my MCAT score, what tier of MD/DO schools should I apply to? Should I even try top tier schools taking my GPA into account?

Also, on a side note, would I be a competitive candidate specifically at the UC medical schools (UCSD, UCI, UCD, UCSF, UCLA) if I were to get a score that aligns with their average admitted applicant scores (between 32-37). I know my GPA is comparatively fairly low, but I feel my research experience/publications will give me a slight boost.

Thanks so much in advance!
