Hello,

I am wondering what medical schools require a dean's letter. Do they normally just require transcripts, or do all med schools at some point ask for some sort of letter from your dean (of good standing)??

Please just answer the questions and don't comment on what happened.

The gist:

Met a girl at a party, had a short relationship with her and it ended on rough terms. She was the dean's niece, dean does not like me...I don't want the dean to write anything to the medical schools. This is really embarrassing so please just answer the question.

TL;DR: What medical schools require a dean's letter of good standing, most or only some? Or is it usually just transcripts? Like do you need to send personal school records or is it usually just transcripts?

Unless your dean sets out to intentionally sabotage your application cycle, you should be fine. Now, if you have an IA, that’s a different story...

I feel like he will intentionally sabotage my application, do you know if all medical schools require a dean's academic standing letter?

Idk, to be honest. An adcom would probably be able to answer your question though

I don’t know of a single medical school that requires such a thing. You choose your letter writers OR your premed committee collects a bunch of letters from people you approach and then produces a committee letter on your behalf.

I’m not even sure what a deans letter is. They ask for your transcripts.

Any medical school can require it. So your choices are to
A) apply, possibly get a letter sent and possibly become doctor
B) not apply, not have a letter sent and not be become a doctor
C) wait until the dean retires, then apply, possibly get a nontoxic letter sent and possibly become a doctor

A Deans letter is not a letter of recommendation. It comes from the Dean of Students, and is usually to certify either that you do or do not have any egregious history with the school. Many medical schools will request one from your college upon acceptance or expected matriculation.

I see. I had never heard of this. Seems like an automated letter that gets sent out by the office upon being requested. I highly doubt dean’s actually have anything to do with it

No, i doubt they do. It's signed by the dean, but usually written by a conduct officer just certifying your conduct record. I don't see a reason why he'd purposefully interfere with the process.

I mean I will apply to medical schools regardless, I was just hoping that I could selectively apply to schools that do not require such a letter. I haven't really heard of it either, I know regular grad schools require it but I heard that Medical Schools normally only need your transcripts, and request the Dean's letter of good standing if something pops up on your transcripts (I have not gotten in trouble in school for anything).

I get the fear, but what would he say? “He dated my niece for a bit and it ended on rough terms, don’t take him”? He would be risking his career and the school’s image if he made something up, and I doubt he’s that petty. If he hates your guts he wouldn’t rave about you, he’d just say that you haven’t caused trouble on campus (property damage, cheating, etc). You’ll be fine.
