  1. Pre-Medical
I'm going to be a sophomore this fall and my mother, who is an RN, says I should start to study some things. She suggests I read her pharmacology books because of all the different medicines I need to know.

Suggest anything, I have the resources.

So, What should I study now if I want to be a pediatrician?

Thanks in advance.

Why don't you just do some pleasure reading? There is seriously no sense in pre-studying, especially this early!

Look up Atul Gawande.

well, you are posting in the high school forum, so i'm assuming you are a sophomore in high school. in which case, yes it is way too early.

if you are a sophomore in college, then study MCAT.

Yes, I'm in high-school. So what CAN I do to prepare then? I want to be ready when I go to college and med school.

:nono:

plz don't read your mom's books.

you won't remember anything.

I'm already checking out Atul's the Checklist Manifesto, Is there anything else I could do?

Curiosity is great, so by all means, indulge as long as you realize that you're not exactly studying for your pharmacology exam six years from now. There are a hundred reasons for this.

This 🙄

Do you mind if I ask, why?

You probably wouldn't have the background knowledge to understand what you're reading. What good would it do for you to study COX inhibitors if you don't understand Michaelis-Menten kinetics? What good would it do to study Michaelis-Menten kinetics if you don't understand transition states/chemical kinetics in general? If you feel like you absoultely MUST start studying ahead of time, pick up the text books for your sophomore classes and work through those. That'll make things a lot easier once school starts. Your drive is really admirable though! Good luck!

Don't waste your time with that. If you really want to get ahead, study for AP tests you want to self study, or the ACT/SAT/PSAT.

Enjoy high school. Don't worry about medicine, anatomy, etc. You'll have plenty of time for that during undergraduate and possibly medical school.

lol don't study medicine books that's SO STUPID. You wont even understand 95% of what you're reading. Your mom isn't very smart is she? Study ACT, SAT, PSAT, AP tests, dude you got lots to do.

My mother is an NP, she was always handing me research articles to read or pointing out something in a textbook thinking I would understand it. Now that I have graduated with a BS in neuroscience and I am entering an SMP, I understand an alright amount of it, but I still want to gauge my eyes out when she does it. In high school it was utterly useless and if nothing else, daunting and scary.
I agree, study the SAT, maybe do some verbal reasoning problems for the MCAT. That sort of stuff doesn't really require college know-how it just takes a lot of practice. Some of the passages are a bit interesting anyway. 🙂
Do some volunteer work in a hospital if you aren't already. Might be good to make some connections to MD's you can later shadow in college.

Thanks everyone, I'll enjoy high-school like you all recommended.😀 While studying for the big tests

Study for MCAT now or you're only going to get into the Caribbean med schools...

Seriously. You're a sophomore. Read some Judy B. Jones and comic books.

Focus on the SAT at this point and have some fun!

Why not read some books that are both difficult and enjoyable? For example, I'm really into the Sherlock Holmes series, as shown by my avatar. It is a lot more interesting than a medical textbook, and my reading skills are improving. That'll help for medical school in the long run (also for undergrad and just life in general), but doesn't make me want to watch paint dry.

Read philosophical books. Not only do they make you smarter, but they're very interesting and insightful.

What he said. Don't forget to enjoy high school also.

Btw, who is HH Holmes?

Pharmacology is one of those things that you're going to forget in less than a month (and being generous with that estimate) after you study for it when it has no relevance to what you're currently doing. I learned pharm throughout the 1st and 2nd years of med school and when I had to study for Step 1 this summer (which is like the SAT for med school) it literally felt like I was starting over anew and learning from scratch.
So like everyone else said, don't bother learning it now, don't even bother learning any pharm in college, just study it when you have to during medical school.

Plus it's the one of the most boring things about medicine (in my opinion at least...), so don't get a bad impression of medicine from trying to learn pharm before you have to lol...
