I am starting pharm school this Fall and was looking to brush up on a few things this summer to help me get started on the right foot and not play catch up the whole time. I graduated undergrad in Dec 2005 so it wont be too tough to get back in the swing, but I was wondering what would give me the most bang for my buck in my first semester.

My school starts P1s with Pharmaceutics, Med Chem, and Pharmacology the fist semester. Knowing that, what are the key things I should have down pat?

Here's my list so far....

1. Functional Groups
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

As you can see it is quite extensive so please only add what is necessary.

Thanks

I'd recommend an in depth review of alcohol absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. You should also learn the pharmacodynamic properties of alcohol, if you haven't already. Just don't drive while you're studying.

Congratulations on pharm school! Seriously though, just try to enjoy your summer. Travel, read, booze it up, hang out with family friends, etc.

^^ completely agree, don't worry about jack the summer before, you'll have plenty of study time coming your way

relax and sleep lots. work and save up money if you can.

don't crack open any books, it would be a waste of time.

Brush up on: 1) Sleep 2) Socializing 3) Going Out With Friends 4) Sleep 5) Having Fun

It's definately not to say that you won't get a chance to do any of the aforementioned while in school it's just that you'll be much happier if you also were able to enjoy your summer before you start. I was in the same boat asking everyone what to brush up on and every last person told me to relax/have fun/party. I didn't crack a book and did perfectly fine my first year. Enjoy the time off, you'll be missing it once school starts!

Like they said I would party.

If you really feel like starting the burn out process early maybe look at your A&P book, though my undergrad one paled in comparison detail wise to my pharmacy school book. We didnt do med chem til 2nd year so fxn'l groups wouldnt have done a whole lot of good where I go.

Study up on which bar has the best drink specials.

LOL, glad there is forum wide agreement on one thing!

I listed a few things in this thread for another member. They may help you too.

I wouldn't study until you get closer to school in July or August. Enjoy your summer, because you need to be well-rested for pharmacy school.

I know that Biochem is useful for sure but..
I'm taking Genetics right now, originally just to increase GPA, but is the knowledge helpful in pharm school at all??
I know that there is class like .pharmacogenomics in pharm school? I am just curious.. just want to know if I should just study to pass to class or try to concentrate on it like my biochem class..

I would just relax the summer before you are going to have plenty of study opportunities after it. I know that at UK the first semester was pretty much a catch up to get everyone on the same page.

you should get a headstart by reading Lippincott's
Pharmacology 22nd edition.. and try to memorize drug
names and class for the drugs they'll teach you 1st semstr.
once you know those, you can focus more on other things
they'll teach you once school starts instead of digging
on the names.. Lippincott is a lifesaver, i strongly recommend it.
