Hello!!!

How are you?

I am currently working on my Double Degree in Biology and Neuroscience. My question is what should I consider doing if I do not get accepted the first time around? I am not interested in doing a post-bac program as you cannot do anything with that certificate. I am willing to apply multiple times for Dental Schools, but at the same time, I want my life to be moving not standing as a post-bac...if I keep getting rejected. (Not all post-bac get accepted) Any thoughts.

P.s Sorry...I have curious mind....I need to have everything planned out so that I am not clueless when something unexpected happens. I have decent GPA. But now days, stats are not that only things that play a role in acceptance therefore I wanted to see if there are options out there.

what are your stats if you dont mind me asking? well, if you dont get in the first cycle, you will have to assess what the possible causes for not getting in are. if its not your gpa, but your DAT, then you would retake that. If its your gpa, and you want to increase it and not do a post bacc, i would suggest a 1-year masters. some people dislike masters, others dislike post bacc. but either way, students get in after doing either a 1 year masters or post bacc program ( if the perform well in those).

If you get rejected and it's not about stats, and not about applying to too few schools, and not about applying really late, then you'll simply have to look at your ECs and what about you is lacking in making you stand out more. Your essay or personal presentation might be lacking as well. And we'll assume you have beyond the pre-reqs in science classes, including many of the ones schools recommend as well.

You could do some research, volunteering, etc. But, I wouldn't focus exclusively on building up my non-stat related points, I would also try to do something I enjoy, like travel (maybe a volunteer opportunity abroad even), learn a new language, run a marathon, all things that are awesome and possibly make you "pop" more as a person.

You would probably do the same things as if you only had 1 major: reapply.

My gpa is 3.55 and DAT...I haven't taken yet....I know my GPA is bad but I can cover it up through the double degree. What kind of masters are you talking about? By the way, I truly appreciate your reply and everyone else....thank you!!!! 😍

There is no such thing as a post-bacc "certificate".... post-bacc just means taking undergrad level courses to increase your chances (mostly by bumping up GPA and taking upper level biology courses).

IMO with this pre-dental process is, if you play your cards correctly, there is no reason for you to need to reapply. What I mean is, If you got the right numbers, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY apply wisely to a good number of schools, your odds of getting in are very high.

IF you don't get in, the first thing you need to do is to contact the schools that rejected you and find out what went wrong, THEN you can start planning accordingly to fix the issue. Its hard for us to tell you what you need to do if you don't get in as in most cases, we don't know whats wrong with your application.

whos the "genius" responsible for making you believe a 3.55 is bad?

if you tell me your undergrad adviser, Im going to rage

Sounds more likely to be a case of SDNitis and the predents.com to me...

By postbac certificate...i meant certificate in Biomedical Sciences Program....thank you so much....I have another question....is applying to a bunch of school a bad thing?

Yup...you answered your own question...lol...my advisor even told me to wait a year or two before applying because most of my pre-req are from a community college. 🙁...advisors really killed my self-confidence.

Thank you for all the comments....keep reply...I am learning a bunch...thank you 😀

I wouldn't wait a year or two to apply as your advisor suggested. What is your science GPA? A 3.55 overall GPA is competitive to get into a dental school and you certainly won't need to do a post-bacc or masters in order to get in (unless you have a low science or BCP GPA). Also, some schools may not accept community college credit hours and some will only take a certain amount, so I would do your research on schools and apply broadly. If you do well on your DAT, you should not have much trouble.

Applying to a lot of schools it NOT a bad thing.... as matter of fact, with today's massive competition, its highly recommended. I applied to 18 schools this cycle, and many of my interviewers asked me specifically how many schools I applied to and how many interviews I had.... I was very honest, and it never hurt my chances.

Most of these guys don't know what theyr talking about. Why in the world would you be asked to wait a 1-2 years? Be like "Why don't I wait 10 years, or better yet, how about I never apply to D-schools?".... Welllllllll.... Did he ask you to wait 1-2 years because your science GPA is low? that could be a reason.... Whats your sGPA?

My science GPA is about 3.4. By the way, congrats to you for your acceptance into multiple dental school...👍

3.55 overall with 3.4 are good numbers. Your a perfect example of someone who really don't need a masters or post-bacc (in-case you don't get in)

Start working on the following
-DAT
-Letters of recommendation
-Personal statement
-Shadowing if you don't have it already
-And finally make a list of schools you are going to apply to. Pick schools wisely and I always advice people to apply to a good number of schools

By the way, when are you planning to apply? I think if you can take the DAT this May or June, You can apply this June.
