What are you meds students wearing to classes these days? Street clothes (casual wear) or a button up shirt with khakis? :p

I actually have the same question.

Living in Boston for the past 4 years, I now have two separate wardrobes--preppy sweater type stuff and skanky clothes for summer when I'm at home in FL....but now that I'll be going to med school IN Florida, I think I need new clothes! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

My guess would be street clothes unless you go to Georgetown and have a dress code. :p

It really depends on the school and the day of the week. Some school have preceptorship days. So you might see people in shirt and tie (male)

But I plan to dress casual and jeans on other days.

Georgetown has a dress code??

I figured everyone would wear "scrubs". Don't you have anatomy lab everyday and nobody wants to bring a change of clothes?

Basically it depends on what you are doing for the day. If you have preceptor or plan on interviewing patients you have to look professional (slacks, nice shirts, and ties for the guys). If you are just have class wear whatever is comfortable, jeans, shorts, T-shirts whatever you want. If you have anatomy lab, I suggest scrubs, you'll want to keep one pair that you are willing to throw out at the end of the semester. I hope this helps.

-straight form a now second year

Georgetown has no dress code but if you walk into one of their lecture halls, it just may seem that way. Just kidding...I think I can make fun of them a little since I went there. Anyway, I would suggest you go casual your first year unless you have preceptorship or lab because you'll have to dress up for third and fourth year so you might as well enjoy the freedom of wearing whatever you want now.

The only dress code I know of is at this DO school. I think it is Lake Erie but I am not entirely sure.

That's so weird...after a bunch of SDNers went to interview at Georgetown, they started this whole thread about the dress code there...so it doesn't exist?

I agree with the casual except for patient contact days opinion.

Where I went to Public Health School, the first year med students all wore casual clothes -- jeans, t-shirts, sweaters. When they had patient contact days, they'd look a little more spiffy.

Where do people change? Does your school have locker rooms?

It's aloha shirts and slacks on patient contact days for us (guys, that is)! Thank goodness, for I tie a horrible windsor knot! :p

Stupid Hawaii not letting stupid mainlanders in...stupid...grumble...grumble

georgetown does not have a dress code. that's ridiculous. i'm an ex physio, and everyone wore whatever--shorts, sandals, etc.

this is what i like about SDN, you can have a 15+ post topic on what to wear to school. wear whatever you want. if you need to wear something nice they will tell you beforehand. other than that they don't care what you wear, or even if you are there in some cases. don't plan on wearing your scrubs from gross all around, they stink. you'll probably get a locker, leave them in there and forget about them until you go to gross. you'll never smell formalin again and not think of 1)gross lab, and 2)whatever locker room setup your school has where everyone keeps their clothes. at first it's nasty, but you get used to it. some people took them home every week to wash them, most just left them for months at a time and at the end burned them.

Geesh, half of the days I wore the same shirt and scrub bottoms I slept in...with Tevas

I always hear folks talking about how nasty their scrubs get and how they have some type of ritualistic burning ceremony after gross.

Although I think the burning ceremony would have been pretty cool, I'm lucky in that UTMB lets students get a new set of three scrubs anytime we want. We just go down to our laundry service in the hospital, turn in the old, nasty ones and get new, clean ones.

Are we the only school that does this? It seems most places with an associated hospital ought to have something similar for their residents and staff. Do they just not let students play, too?

Take care,
Jeff

PS, after gross, we pretty much adhere to the typical island dress code..shorts, sandles and some type of shirt. This obviously doesn't include days with patient contact.

most dental schools have dress codes

I'll confirm what cleanscrubs and FunkDoc said -- no dress code at Georgetown (I went there too.) I can see why people might make that mistake. Students at Georgetown dress very nicely compared to most schools. I certainly was shocked by the difference when I got to California!

People at my school wear jeans or sweats everyday. On days with patient contact, males wear khakis and tie and females wear pants. I think that I am the only girl to wear a skirt. I am sure that is different on the east coast and more conservative midwest schools.

As for scrubs, if you want anyone to sit with you at lunch, I would suggest you leave the scrubs in your locker. Every school I have every seen has lockers and a changing room for you. Believe me, you do not want to wear your nasty fascia-covered clothes around any longer then you have to!

I think medical schools should require dress codes. You're going to be a doctor, you should dress like the upperclass citizen that you are. Think four hundred dollar shirts...one hundred dollar ties. If you're a female, nothing but sweater sets.

i think this could possibly be the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard, except the part about upperclass citizens, can't argue there.

Have an old pair of shoes that you won't mind throwing away... Shoes get NASTY in gross.

It's funny, at the beginning of first year, you can tell everyone was more out to impress. As the year went by, people relaxed into their comfort mode. Here, it all depends. But I think being on the East coast ppl are more conservative. Most people just wear jeans and sweaters in the winter, and in the warmer weather, shorts, T-shirts, and everything else. Some girls wear skirts to class and nicer things, but no button ups here unless it's preceptorship day.

What about baseball hats? Can people wear them to class and lab?

Many people, including me, wore baseball caps to class all the time. Usually not on lab days because you would be amazed at how the formaldehyde smell permeates everything you bring in to the lab. I think it partly depends on the culture of the school. Ours was pretty laid back so everyone was casual. Everyone wore scrubs to the lab. We did have lockers to keep them in, but they were in the hall. Most people changed in the hallways, except some of the girls who went to the bathroom to change. Anyone walking by would get quite a show!

This might be a dumb question, but where do we get scrubs? Should I buy them now before school starts, or will the school give them out?

Do people wear other clothes (like a T-shirt) underneath scrubs?

At our school, you are issued one pair of scrubs, and change it at a machine for a clean pair. But at most hospitals, they are free for the taking. And it's ok to wear clothes underneath, except for surgery.

i've heard a lot of schools now require students to wear hospital gowns to class

Thankfully, my school is pretty laid back. I plan to where very laid back clothes (jeans, shorts, t-shirts, khakis, flip-flops, etc...pretty much what I wore to college classes) in medical school. Of course, the sun in Miami forces me to where just that. :D

As for dress, I'm afraid that if they request my presence at 8:30am everyday then they get what they get...

the only time I plan on making an effort to look nice are preceptor days, then it's suit all the way. Sweater sets? get real... :p

Hey I vaguely remember people talking about dress codes at med schools, does anyone know if MCP Hahnemann has one??? What are we ladies supposed to wear???
