What types of opportunities for research while doing an MPH?

For those who have completed MPHs, what is a typical week like? Is there ample opportunity to get involved with research and faculty, or is most of one's time spent on coursework? How much of a difference does it make if someone does 1 year MPH at somewhere like Hopkins (where you have to spend a lot of time on classes since it's 1 year) versus doing an MPH for 2 years?

I haven't completed my MPH yet, but are you asking someone who is currently doing their MPH? A typical week for me, is 2 days of classes (enrolled full time), and because of the semester schedule, I have the rest of the days to do a) research with a professor b) research job with the local hospital. I personally enjoy the 2 year program that allows me to work alongside taking classes because I get a mixed schedule as opposed to ALL coursework and then ALL work. I still have enough time to delegate towards studying in addition to my classes, and establish myself with career opportunities at the same time. It seems this would be a personal preference and this is what I have to share. I hope it helps!

Thanks for the message! As a medical student I will be able to apply for the 1 year Hopkins MPH, but have heard that it's an intense 1 year where they basically squeeze in a bunch of coursework in 11 months. That compared to say a 2 year MPH at Columbia where I'm interested in some of their research is an interesting comparison, but as a medical student I really don't think I can take 2 years off to do an MPH. 1 year makes sense. I kind of wanted to see what types of opportunities there may be as a 1 year MPH student by hearing about how 2 year MPH students get by. Sounds like there is time, but with a 1 year it may not be much. We'll see how it turns out. Thanks for your insight though!

Just to clarify, is that the combined MD/MPH (doing both degrees at Emory) or doing an MD elsewhere and then applying for a 1 year Emory MPH separately?
