Hi,

I am just starting out my glide year, and I really want to make it a memorable and unique one. I have to work full-time, but in my spare time I want to do some great things. I need some inspiration.

Anyone either have a great job, great travel experiences, great volunteering they'd like to share? Anyone start a foundation, start a business, or pursue an exciting hobby?

As for me, I'm considering freelancing as an artist at least part-time, but I'd also like to illustrate a children's book.

Thanks,

T

I organized a Women's Health Fair for the underserved Chinese community in my area.

well, this is what I am intending on doing for my glide year...

1. Fall-Spring: EMT-B certification
2. Fall-Spring: Job related to medicine: ie research/clinical
3. Fall-Spring: Part-time job for cash ie bartend, wait tables
4. Spring-Summer: Medical Spanish (SALUD) immersion program in Latin Amer

It has been very difficult to find a job related to medicine b/c most employers want a 2 yr commitment and/or certification ie Med Tech, Surg Tech, ER Tech, Lab Tech etc. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

I was hoping you could give me more informatioin on your medical immersion program

SALUD sounds great and I know that many people have had a great experience, but it is costly.

I organized my own "immersion program" and saved alot of cash by going to this Guatemalan mission (San Lucas) and shadowing a doctor and working on other projects in this rural town. I bought a couple of med spanish text books and I think I learned a ton. But you forget if you don't keep reviewing or use in your daily life.

Back to my point, I spent 2 wks in Guatemala for the price of 1 with SALUD (and I could have saved even more if I wanted to by pinching while I was there). The negative is that there isn't a formal program all set for you, with formal clinical/shadowing opps.

tofuturkey- saw your previous posts about how you have a JD and can't find a job in chicago.

what I would do, yo is stop by some doctor offices and human resource offices to apply in person.

I myself was looking for a job at the beginning of this week and started the phone calling bit. luckily I snagged an ER tech position at one of the resurrection health clinics.

The ER director called me to tell me to go in and interview and thats what I did. I didn't wait for my online application to be reviewed cuz I was told that being there in person always presents the right impressions- you care about their job opportunity and sometimes its a little harder for them to turn ya down especially in person. on phone, anyone can be their own bitter self.

I also had to fill out the application in person even tho I filled it out online which to me kinda indicated how online apps are taken in comparison to doing it in person.

good luck and if you have questions pm me. I would start with just googling and finding yahoo's directory for some doctors' offices, get their phone #'s. Target friendly staff cuz friendly staff most always means friendly doctor. If you're looking to work in hospitals, just hit up mercy, res. health clinics, advocate, and u chicago, northwestern. they have tons of openings for anyhting from receptionist to patient care reps.

Such hard workers!! 😉

I'm going to do all the things that I won't have time to do in Med SChool:

- teach myself to play acoustic guitar
- work at a job (during the nights) which is completely wacky and responsibility free
- spend next summer in Europe (Greece/Italy/Switzerland)

bungee jump
learn to fly
sky dive in case I'm a crappy pilot
I'm going to Europe
sex
clean my room
