What was your organic chem grade?

I hear that organic chem is one of the hardest classes that pre meds take. I was just curious to what your grade was and where you took the class?

My sentiments exactly, especially considering the OP asked on SDN. Let's save the headaches and generalize:

70% will be A's
20% will be B's
10% will be C's (for those students who didn't decide to pursue medicine until after they barely got through o-chem because they didn't study).

For Chem 3A, I got an A. For Chem 3B, I got a C-. But I got mugged two days before my 3B test. I was beaten pretty badly and had to be hospitalized. I decided to take the test anyway. Needless to say, I did pretty poorly, but I guess I have an excuse.

Love the time saving measures!
For the record, organic is not that worst or hardest, it is difficult and can be extremely boring, but is not any harder than biochemistry, and in my opinion upper level bio courses (molecular, advanced genetics, etc.) proved much more strenuous.
Reconsidering, as far as required classes for most medical schoosl, ochem, gchem2 and physics2 are the most difficult obviously.

Got a B in first semester and a C in the second semester at a state university. My experience is that you'll either "get it" or you won't. I didn't get it. But after the MCAT is over, it doesn't really matter.

I totally agree. It's almost impossible to memorize every reaction you encounter. If you understand the mechanisms behind the reactions and can predict/understand why certain molecules react in certain ways, you'll be a lot better off. And its fun to visualize the models in 3D. Use the construction sets.

How in the heck will asking random strangers their grades give any insight on how Orgo will go for you? Ask upperclassmen at your school, or better yet, just take the class and find out since it's a pre-med prereq and you have to take it anyway. Organic is always hyped and it turns out to be really challenging for some people and a breeze for others, just like ANY OTHER CLASS.

I thought Orgo was the hardest class, but not the one I hated the most (I hated physics the most). I've noticed those who like Orgo (spatial reasoning/memorization) don't like Physics (formulea) and vice versa.

If not, take Schore if he's teaching.......... do not take the bastard that was on probation...(i don't remember his name)

Other advice.. try to get Nambiar.. he rocks.. is easy and is this little cute indian man who yells at people who read newspapers or fall asleep in class.

Anyway.. i had him for 118C and managed a B+. I had Nasiri for 118A, 118B.. I also had her for prep chem.. which helped me get used to her EXTREMELY THICK accent... she' s hella nice though.

Wow that was a quick response, Nasiri is actually teaching this entire quarter for chem 118A, and Schore is doing 128. I'm really glad to hear that you did very well in her class, especially since I heard that she was tough. In terms of my grades, my current GPA is 3.59 which isn't too high or too low, and i'm currently registered for BIS 101, Stat 13 and Phy 007A as well as waitlisted for CHe 118A. (I'll definatly drop one class if I'll get into ochem since I don't want to kill myself with so many sciences, but I'll have to make that decision later on.)

basically, orgo is all about finding patterns. O1 is pretty simple, like any "normal" science course, very similar to Gen Chem.

O2 is where finding patterns comes into play. Memorizing straight rxns won't do, this is what i tried on the 1st midterm and got a D. I studied rxn types nad patterns for the final and got an A+, averaged to a B+ since the final was worth more.

oh yeah, o-lab can lick my b@lls. worst class ever, i couldn't do ish right. everyone laughed at me too (haha, i laughed at my self also).

i think one of the reasons pre-meds feel organic may be the hardest class is that they haven't yet been accustomed to a subject that 'can' require hours of laborious study time. at least in a consistent manner. before this, for some at least, a weeks worth or even a couple days of studying is enough to do well in intro bio/chem classes. with organic, a dedicated practice of solving problems and understanding principles is necessary to continue on. and with organic being one of the first classes taken by an undergrad that requires tedious extending work, the adjustment is usually what's troubling them. just do your work is the only advice i can give...

That's true. Organic's scary reputation made me actually take it seriously, so I put a lot more effort into it (I exceeded my grand total of bio/genchem lecture attendance by the third week of organic chem). I think physics is the dark horse that isn't often proclaimed to be hard but can get you if you're not careful. Well, if you take engineering calc-based anyway, god only knows what you learn in algebra based.

Case, I actually have to disagree with you, it all depends which college you are attending. In some colleges gchem bio and phys are super easy and you can get away with spending an hour or two per week on each subject while other colleges will require you spend at least 3 hours a day on each subject.
