What's up with Howard???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have received nothing. I heard that this is the norm for Howard year after year.

If I am not African-American, should I not even bother applying to Howard? I've noticed that most of their students are black with a couple of latinos.

Well if you want to attend Howard to become a doctor, then go ahead and apply. Howard is predominantly blk but they do accept non-blacks. Don't cut yourself short by not applying because you are not blk.

Ms. Dawson:

Are you applying MD too?

Yeah I am applying MD also..but with my family AND some of my experience, my first choice happens to be DO school. But ultimately the name of the game is "GET IN SOMEWHERE"....so to increase my chances it makes sense to apply to a range of schools in my area...which of course include MD and DO schools.

Howard's medical school community is pretty diverse and from what I can tell pretty seperate from its undergraduate community which is 99.9% black(exaggerated). Obviously being a historical black medical school, the majority of the entering classes are minority, but most people are still pretty shocked at the fair amount of non-minority med students.

I think I just like diversity. I would have no problem going there, as long as I get a quality education.

Ms. Dawson, I'm on the same boat as you are. I prefer DO but I'm also applying MD to increase the chances to get in somewhere. I also applied to Howard and haven't heard a single word from them. On a happier note, I have two interviews lined up already (one MD and one DO)!! Good luck with your quest for a medical education! (and wish me luck too).

Goodluck Shinken! And congrats on the interviews...my files just got complete at some schools (secondaries are slow with a baby lol) but i hope to get some good news on interviews soon myself.

I agree with robz,

I have been living in NYC for 13 years and am very used to diversity. Hell, I went to a high school in which the white population constituted about 10 percent of the whole studentbody. I feel that I would probably have more in common with black people in Washington than I would with white people somewhere in the south or the midwest.

Is Howard one of the schools that submits secondaries before verification (with just your preliminary info)?

I can't tell you the answer to that because Howard is the only school that hasn't sent me a secondary. The have sent me nothing, not even an email that they transmitted my info from AMCAS.

Has anyone received secondary informantion from Howard? If you have can you post what they told you?

Thanks and good luck.

Application downloaded 12.14.03.

Secondary received 1.5.04. Not bad!

Hey all, this is my very first response to a SDN thread (so bear with me). I completed my AMCAS in sept., recieved an invitation to interview late oct., couldn't attend the interview till the last day they offered me (dec 9th). And recieved a letter of acceptance on dec 19th.

Now in response to the secondary, my interview invite letter was accompanied by a few biographical questions but no essays. On the day of interviews we were given a two sided paper that had essay questions that resembled that of a secondary. We had to complete it and give it to our interviewer before we left.

Hope that helped.

First off, congratulations on the acceptance. A 10 day turnaround between interview and acceptance is great!

Also, thanks for the info about the interview. I though the secondary seemed a lil too good to be true!

Is HU your top choice or are you waiting on other schools?? I would also like to know your stats if you don't ind (PM me if you'd prefer).

This is a question that is as puzzling as it is old.

That is a wonderful question and certainly one that many people would like to have the answer to. What exactly goes on at Howard's School of Medicine?

Coops

Anyone else heard from howard? I sent them my secondary a while back and they still haven't even cashed my check. Looks like i'll call them tomorrow.

Hi,

You mentioned that they still hadn't cash your check. If I remember correctly Howard's application fee was $45 payable by money order or cashier check only. In the letter that accompanied the application they mentioned that due to the number of apps received they would NOT notify students of missing materials or submission of incorrect form of payment. Pull out your letter and double check. I hope your app is not waiting for review because they won't deposit your bank check. How long ago did you mail it in?

However that may not be the problem, Howard is notoriously slow. I have yet to receive my app complete post card (and I'm pretty sure my lor's have been received). Keep me posted.

Good luck!

Same darn thing happened to me. I sent a personal check in Sept but it wasn't until Jan (when I noticed that my check was not cashed and they hadn't contacted me) that I checked a copy of the secondary and saw that they do not take personal checks.

I ran to the post office quickly and got a $45 money order...attached a note to it stating my boo-boo...

This is a little off topic, but for those of you who have had a chance to check out the medical program at Meharry and Howard, which do you prefer? And why?😎

HI guys:

I sent in my secondary several weeks ago and my LORs were in last week. I called today and although they hadn't processed anything yet, the lady processed the LORs right there and promised to take care of the secondary tomorrow.

Whew!

So, anyone have any idea how long until I might here about an interview? Aaaaand, anyone know how Howard's doing as far as filling up the class?

Thanks.

Evo

EvoDevo, what is the phone number you called?

evodevo,

I called the admissions office at Howard today, they told me that my application is complete and is under review by the committee. If you want to know, I sent in my secondary in October and my LOR's came in october or november.

I wish all of you luck in this hectic process and hope that we all get what we wish for, ACCEPTANCES!!

Thanks for the upday, dmitri! 🙂 I'm going to call back on Monday to make sure everything's going along smoothly.

Where's the supposed admissions office hostility I've heard so much about? 😉 They've been so sweet to me......

evodevo,

I know what you mean. When I called them, they were nothing but sweet and courteous towards me. Who knows, the department can still be slow and disorganized but the only impression that they made on me didn't reflect this view.

Good luck

dmitri

All I have to say is that Howard sent me a secondary three separate times, took my money order, and had me in limbo for 8 months.... I finally got an interview offer at the end of May!!!!! I'd already made my final decision on May15th as per AAMC rules 🙄 😕 🙄

I don't get it 🙁

I decided not to respond to the interview offer, you know to repay the rude behavior... but somehow I don't think they'll get the message

So does anyone know when they stop interviewing?? I mean, I've given up on hearing anything, and it seems that Howard is soooooooooooooooooooooooo slow.

Anyone receive any good news? If so, congrats! 👍

i called them just now...2:51pm on April 1, 2004
and I'm "under review"....what on earth does that mean? my app has been complete since November.

I want to withdraw my app from there, whats the best way? as in the easiest way? I was thinking of calling, cant be bothered to write, after all they've had my file since nov/dec or so

They are really disorganized I think.

I was sent an e-mail early March and asked to pick an interview date by 2 days later (this e-mail was sent at 4ish Weds and I was to pick by Friday).

Then when I called, it turned out they ALREADY scheduled me an interview date...one that wasn't even listed on the choices.

I then rescheduled and decided to cancel my March 30? or 31st interview.

I hope their adcom isn't reflective of their school....

I called and they said to write an e-mail to Ann Finney.

I have been under review since January. . .Mind you, I've called at least once a month. Same story.

Anyone have Ann Finney's email address???

If I was to know that Howard was like this I would have saved my money and been contempt with the interviews I already had. I have been complete since november and still no word from them.

aiight, so i talked to my boy, this second year at HU. he said its getting so late, that its time to make some moves if you really want howard to get on the ball with your app.

He said to write an email to Dean Cannon....(maybe "CC:" Ann Finney), but if you go to the DEAN, you go to the source. Plus, always send an updated transcript or new LO-Interest. all of which might help.

thats my 2 cents.

I already did that! Since HU was the only school I applied to that didn't ask for an essay, I sent one to dean cannon in letter format. It was at least 1.5 pages long. Still nothing. I don't want to harass them, but I mean, dang! Why no love HU??

Hey all,
i'm new to sdn; i wanted to share my experience with HU. My application was complete since november. I called a couple of weeks ago to check my application status and was told that i was actually selected to interview there. An interview date was picked for me and I started to look for cheap airfares. Two days later, an admission officer calls me to say that the interview was cancelled because I wasn't selected yet. I was only placed on the list of those who may be interviewed!!!!!! I was very disappointed and upset at the same time. Why can't HU make an effort to get things straight and not give wrong info! HBS do not necessarily have to be disorganized and supa sloooow in the admission process. I think Meharry is more competent at getting back to the applicants.
hope all of you get a least one acceptance. That's all we need after all.... one!

Hi guys:

So I sent the email to the addresses above, and I receive the following response. Note that it appears to be a form letter, but apparently I never received it to begin with, and I've been complete since Feb. 🙄 Anyway, hope this helps.

RE: NOTIFICATION OF APPLICATION REVIEW
Dear Applicant:
I am writing to inform you that we have received and reviewed your AMCAS application. Secondary applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. Interviews are currently being conducted, and we expect to continue interviewing through the end of May, but no later than mid-June. If we are able to invite you to the College of Medicine for an interview with one of our Admissions Committee members, we will inform you of available dates in writing. Please do not contact the Office of Admissions to request an interview.
Applicants who have completed the application process, and who have not received an invitation to interview by May 31 should receive written notification of a final decision on or before August 30. Please forward all correspondence directly to the Office of Admissions, to insure that it becomes part of your application file.
We will consider applications with MCAT scores from 2001 through 2004 ONLY, that is, scores not more than three years old at the end of the current application year, 2004. Letters of recommendation must be dated during the application year 2003-2004, unless you are a reapplicant and have requested that we consider your letters of recommendation from the prior year?s application, 2002-2003. You will receive no further correspondence regarding letters of recommendation or MCAT scores, so please review your materials to be sure they are sufficiently current.
Due to the large volume of applications, if we are not able to invite you to the College of Medicine for an interview, you will receive no further correspondence from our office regarding an interim status.
We appreciate your patience, and thank you for your interest in the College of Medicine.
Sincerely,

Has any one heard from Howard lately?

I've recieved and submitted secondaries to Howard, but havern't heard anything since. Although they tell you not to call, I did. They told me that if I got the opportunity to go somewhere else to take it. On the other hand I heard they have rolling interviews (meaning they interview untilo the class is full). So the message is unclear. But I heard they are notorious for being slow. A friend wanted to go to Howard and she had not heard from them so she accepted a seat at Temple. Three months later, Howard offered her a seat. Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Three weeks after classes had started at Temple. It's sad
