OK, so I know this depends on your specialty, your competitiveness, and how many places you apply to. That said what's your budget? Please list your competitiveness of your specialty, your own competitiveness, the number of programs applying to, your region/regions of the country, and your estimated budget. Also, please feel free to say so if you think a budget is too small/big etc.

for myself:

Noncompetitive specialty
Average medical student
10 programs, in 5 states
West
$3000
...not having to scramble on 3/17/11...priceless

too much? too little?

Highly competitive surgical subspecialty
Competitive student
East coast
15 programs across country
$7500
😡

ENT
Slightly below average scores but much reseach/pubs/good letters
70+ programs across country

...one HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS

ENT
Above average scores and good class rank
1 publication some ongoing projects
Applying to 32 schools - mostly midwest and planning to drive a LOT

$3000?

The financial aid coordinator at my school told us that on average, students who applied from our school last year spent $5000. Probably you ENT people will spend a little more and the FP folks will spend less. But I'm budgeting $5000 based on that estimate.
