Does anyone when do places like Brigham, BIDMC, Brown, northwestern start sending out invites ?? Not sure if Mayo is considered a big boy too but would be curious about when they send out invites ??

Also talking about Mayo ... is it really -40 in the winters there ??? Someone told me about almost arctic temperatures there but wanted to know if it was actually true? Also thoughts about the program would be welcome

Brown started already
Both Northwestern and BWH have suggested they won't be sending out anything until November.

Thanks ... got the invite from Brown which was good !! Called Mayo to see when they would be sending out invites and to ask about the dates .... seems like they will not be sending out invites till Nov 1st and their dates suck .. only two and they clash with days when I have interviews at other programs that I will be ranking much higher ... so that sucks ... they said they will not be opening any more dates too so decided notified them I will not be interested....and yeah it is -40 in the winters .. just checked wikipedia.

BIDMC invites should be going out in 2 weeks time or so they say

I'm wondering if these invitations are sent out in batches or on a rolling basis depending on when you submit ERAS? A lot of people I know were ready to submit the application the day ERAS opened, but I submitted it about three weeks ago. I'm also noticing on the "Interview Invites 2007" thread that people are getting invites to certain places in a steady trickle and not necessarily in one big sweep. Any thoughts/insights into this?😕

I think you are right. So this means you can either email/call the prgm about the status of your application or you can wait until mid-Nov. and then inquire further. I got invites to places that my friends were invited to weeks prior. It is such a random process sometimes.

Hey folks,

I'm an MSIV applying for PM&R right now, my fiance is applying for OB, but she doesn't use studentdoctor, so I look around the OB boards for her. 🙂 Anyway, out of my own curiosity, are the programs listed in the original poster's post as "the big boys" really known to be the best programs in the country? Brown's OB hospital isn't even in the top 50 on the U.S. News & World Report Gynecology Hospital ranking!

What would you guys say are the accepted top 10-15 programs for OB? Again, just for my own curiosity. 🙂

I'm applying to OB and I have no clue what these programs are. I'm just applying based on geographic location.

This is my take on the top 9 residency programs based on reputation from what I gathered from attendings, residents, and medical students. I believe that the top 10 programs based on reputation will be different from the top 10 popular programs. I think geography plays an important role (if not more important) than the reputation of a program. I already spent four miserable years in bone chilling coldness for graduate school (I went to Mayo and took a few years off) and want sunshine, water, and mountains for a change!

In no particular order:
(top 9 because I can't think of anymore at this time)

BWH/MGH-Boston, MA
UTSW/Parkland-Dallas, TX
UNC-Chapel Hill, NC
UCSF-San Francisco, CA
Northwestern-Chicago, IL
UW-Seattle, WA
Brown-Providence, RI
UAB-Birmingham, AL
Pitt-Pittsburgh, PA

I did not include Mayo on the list above for residency programs but I would say it is a top 3 fellowship program for gynecologic oncology. Mayo Clinic is more of a place you would go for fellowship or a faculty position (I heard this is true across specialties).

So what about Emory, Yale, Hopkins, Stanford, etc? Are those not that great? I always assumed they would be at least decent places to train. . . .thoughts?

i've heard emory's not so great for ob residency. not too sure about the rest.

standford's kinda sucky for ob...research-oriented but generally not the best training program. rumor is they had problems a few years ago... the big names for undergrad or med school does not apply for ob programs. more so for medicine but not ob.
