Hello everyone I hope all of you are doing well. My best wishes to those of you applying/interviewing right now.

background: I graduated this past May with my bachelor's degree. As a psych major I never took and bio, chem, or physics. I took Chem 1 over the summer and am taking Chem II, Bio I this semester. I am signed up for Intro to organic chem, Bio II and intro to physics for next semester. I can't take Organic I, II until next fall and spring as well as Physics I, II. When should I apply? when do i take the DAT? When should i start studying for the DATs? any information would be appreciated.

Thank you and have a great day

Best thing to do is to get all or most of your application package in order so when the application cycle starts in the beginning of June, you can submit it pretty soon after it opens up. That way you can interview early. For some of the more competitive schools, they tend to fill up their classes early; i submitted my apps in September and got waitlisted at quite a few places.

If you're thinking of submitting right now for the current application cycle, it's a bit late, but I know of a few people who are in dschool right now and submitted in early/mid october.

Apply when your DAT and SGPA are at their peak...better to do it once well than to have to re-apply (as there can be a stigma attached to that at some programs). Best DAT review is probably what you learned in class. Physics post-DAT, OChem before. Whenever you apply, do it early in the cycle (i.e. June/July) and have all your stuff (letters, DAT scores, etc) ready to go.

I'll try and make it simple for you. Apply on May 15, 2006, the first day AADSAS allows applications to be filed. Have all your Letters of Recs ready to go. Have your transcripts ready to go. Start studying DAT right after Spring Semester 2006. Study for about 2-3 months and take the DAT no later than end of July or early August. You don't have to wait to take the DAT in order to apply. It would be advantageous for you to apply right when AADSAS allows because most schools are on rolling admissions.

I believe the most popular study materials are (Not in any particular order):

1) Kaplan DAT Blue Book
2) DAT Achiever (Test simulator)
3) Topscore Pro (Test simulator)
4) Kaplan Subject Tests (Can only get it when purchasing Kaplan course)

Best wishes on your journey...

Thank you for taking the time and responding.
So i can apply May 2006 without organic chem? I will register for Organic Chem I and Physics I in Fall 06 and Organic II and physics II in the Spring 07. I was under the impression that I couldn't apply until I had finished all of my pre-reqs. This would mean I'd apply May 2007, no? 🙂

You can apply with out prereqs, there is a spot on the application to list what classes you are planning on taking in the future. The only problem I see is that you haven't taken ORGO... taking the DAT w/o having ORGO is not going to be easy. You'll have to really work your butt off trying to learn the stuff. Organic Chem is very tough for a lot of people. There are lots of weird rules and things to memorize. If at all possible I would consider trying to find a different college that you can at least take the first semester at before you take the DAT. If you get at least one sememster in, that is enought to do okay on the O-chem portion. Good luck...

Really? I didn't know that I could apply without orgochem.... Next semester I signed up for Intro to organic chem, General Bio II and Intro to Physics ( i thought i'd take intro since i have no background in physics)... For the DAT do you guys think that Microbiology or Pharmacology would help? Pharmacology is only being offered next semester which means I'd have to drop Intro to physics and take General Physics I next fall. I've heard mixed responses about taking General Physics I without any background in it. I just want to play it safe and not have to repeat any classes.
thanx 🙂

Yup, you can apply without taking Ochem as long as you have it done before matriculation. In my opinion, taking intro to Physics will waste your time and $$. I have never had any background in Physics and am taking General Physics I and doing just fine. All you need is some algebra background. I think everyone who takes Physics is doing it for the first time. I personally think that Ochem is totally doable without taking the class. The reason being is that on the real DAT it is very very general when it comes to the types of questions asked. If you can follow and understand the material in the Kaplan Blue Book, then you should be good to go. Not to mention, the Intro Ochem class you are scheduled for should help get a basic understanding for Ochem. That's really all you need... is a basic understanding of the material.

I think if you took Microbiology and/or Biochemistry before the DAT it would help. Also, if you took Anatomy & Physiology, it would help. I don't believe Pharmacology will help you any on the DAT (I could be wrong...but I've never taken a pharm class.).

hope this helps...
