When to apply for orthopaedic away rotations?

Hello everyone, I am a MS2 interested in ortho. I know it's too early, but I want to make sure I am prepared when it is time to apply for my away rotations. Can you help give me some guidance on when I should apply for my ortho rotations? I have heard that most away rotations are based on first come first serve and I have also heard of people reaching out to programs before the application cycle even opens and landing spots that way? Hoping someone can help give me advice and guidance on this process.
