hey, new sdn member here. I am a high school senior and i have just finished most of my apps, and i have even gotten into some of my early action schools. I got a job as a part time pharmacy aid though about a month ago, and i've started to like the job and the atmosphere/environment in pharmacy. They are training me right now and i will be come a tech soon. This has got be thinking about a career in pharmacy, with the obvious choice being to enroll in pharmacy school. How does the process work? I heard most students are accepted from High School, and the only open spots to college transfers are from people who have dropped out? I don't stand a chance of getting into any good pharmacy school with my high school gpa, so i am really counting on being able to transfer. Do i have to transfer to a school that has a pharmacy school first, and then apply to the pharmacy school itself during my soph/junior year?

Definitely not true. There are a few "0-6" programs designed for students to go directly from high school to college/pharm school combined, but not the majority. To become a pharmacist requires a doctorate degree now, so after completing 3-4 years of college, you can apply to one of the MANY PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) programs offered throughout the country. Check out the FAQs at the top of this forum for some useful info, as well as www.pharmcas.com, the site through which the majority of applications to pharmacy school can be completed. Good luck!

Hi, welcome!

The process works differently at each school, to be honest. I just got accepted to UNC Chapel Hill's Pharmacy School, but I'm a sophomore in college. They won't allow you to apply there until you've been in college for two years and completed their prerequisite coursework (like..they require certain biology and chem courses, and a bunch of general college things..like philosophy, etc.) - and luckily for me, I was able to complete it in 2 years. You can attend a college that does not have a pharmacy school and transfer over, sure. However, I know that (for example), UNC's pharm school really seems to like their own undergrad students, so a good percentage of them get in. But it can definitely be done either way.

But yes, I spent my first two years (which I'm still completing) here at UNC Chapel Hill doing all the prerequisite coursework and I applied this year to pharmacy school, and I will begin classes at the pharmacy school in fall 2007. Hope this helps?
