I am going to be attending DMU this fall. I am very excited to start this new exciting chapter. H/e alot has gone on in my personal life this past year and I am ready to move on. Away from certain people, chance to start fresh. I work as a medical scribe right now and have for a year, finally feel like i am outgrowing this job. What should be the timeline to moving out for medical school? I dont want to quit my job too early and get bored or get out to Iowa too soon. any advice from med students would be helpful..wanna spend this time making good memories

Not a medical student, but I'll tell you from what I've seen from all my friends who went to medical school, if money is not an issue which is rarely the case then quit working and enjoy your last free months of freedom.
My personal plans before I matriculate (if), would be to travel around the world for like 2 months and experience different things in life before caving in for medical school.

I'm starting school this coming June. I too can't wait to quit my job and relax and travel a little bit before school starts. I'm planning on being out of my job in early April and enjoying 2 months before the fun starts!

Quit tomorrow. You're going to medical school. Breathe clean air, live life, travel. Do whatever. I didn't because I couldn't, and 4 years later I still wish I had taken advantage of the time before my first med school class started. Life changes in a big way. Seriously, quit tomorrow. And congrats.

Haha are you serious? i gotta save up another couple grand and then i'll be ready. im so over it though. so basicaly going to ask if i can work per diem

I go to DMU and was a scribe last year. You have a huge advantage in clinical medicine over other incoming MS-1s. I quit halfway through June and moved to Des Moines a week before school started. That gave me 5 weeks of doing nothing.. I saved up $2000 to do that. I got bored but then realized how much I missed being bored as soon as school started. Travel or golf or read books or all of the above. Life gets real. Good luck!

I too have wondered this. I work full-time. I dont have any acceptances yet but I've thought about what I would do with the time before school. Do I keep working and save up another 20-30k, invest it and use it to help pay off loans quicker/build an emergency fund, or do I quit and take a trip to Switzerland spending maybe 5Kish on something I won't be able to do for a very long time? Most will schools start early august right? How much time do people really need to make the transition from working to medical school?

I begin medical school this June. I plan on quitting my job late April, so that I have all of May to travel, relax, and create memories. 🙂

I am giving myself a 1 month vocation as well. Starting school in August and quitting late June. 🙂

That sounds great, except when you have to pay rent, bills, and eat.

I'm right here with you, buddy. I'm from a poor family and just had to drop 3K on a deposit. More interviews coming up and if I get another acceptance somewhere, I may have to drop more money on another deposit. I'm glad these are the kinds of problems I am having because I've been accepted. But I also have to make money to move out there and cover deposit and fees for a new place. Lots of expenses are coming down the pike.

Yeah seriously. I think end of April is the earliest I quit. The more $ i can stack up the better for unforeseen costs. I dont want to rip during my savings. Hoping my parents will help out a little bit

My family doesn't/won't do anything for me financially. It's just me and my fiancé and he makes pretty good money... If I do end up getting into med school I will probably quit my job two months before I start school so I can get married (and prep for the wedding) and go on a honeymoon without worrying about work.

It's been awhile as I matriculated several years ago, but I'm pretty sure I quit my full time job at the beginning of June. Then, I moved around the middle/end of June to my new city. That gave me over a month to settle in to my new location and explore and go on a vacation.

Also, I promise that going to med school isn't the end of the world. I've travelled a lot the past several years during med school and during my vacations of residency.

With that said, definitely try to take some free time if your budget allows you to do so.
