While I’m unbelievably excited to start dental school next fall, I’m also concerned about having time to go to the gym regularly. I’m the type of person to eat when I’m stressed, so I really don’t want to gain a lot of weight in school. So my question is, when do you all have time to work out? Do students usually go to the gym early in the morning before classes or right after classes in the evening? I know I’ll have a lot on my hands with school, but I really don’t want to put my health on the back burner.

Thanks!

It depends on when your classes are. I have to be up by 6 every day to be to classes, and there's no way I'm waking up at 4:30 to work out.

I am starting Dental school next year and I plan going at least 3 times a week right after classes. No way in hell I am waking up early to workout lol

It depends on what kind of person you are - early bird or a night owl?

Even if you plan your whole schedule perfectly now, I promise you it will change. I’m a canadian D1 and started school with a set schedule, but when that courseload hits, and you’re in class 8-5 everyday, it becomes very challenging to maintain. I workout maybe 1-2 times a week now, mostly on weekends, and have been able to still lose weight. Most important thing is to get your diet and eating habits in check. Thats what will make you fat, not lack of exercise. Seriously take this time to enjoy, workout all you want, and just have fun. Dental school is the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced so really appreciate your time now

Ive gone at 6 am M-F since the very beginning of dental school unless i need to cram for a test, but i loathe going after class/clinic because the gym is packed.

My friend also does a similar time to this.

However, when I was in chemistry graduate school, I was so swamped that I chose to go at night.....at 2:00- 3:00 am every other day.

Good luck OP. I guess I reside in the night owl category.

For university gyms, the busiest times are going to be after classes and clinic. Going early the gym will be a lot less busy. The problem is that depending on when the gym opens and classes start you may not have time for this, and typically 20-somethings are averse to waking up early to work out. Try a preliminary schedule based on what you feel now. If a few months in you realize that you aren't going to the gym often, you should ask yourself why that is - because you can't bring yourself early? Too tired after class and studying? And then you'll know what you need to change.

I do decent and if I have 9am I will workout IN the morning. I hate waking up early but a pre workout helps. Going @ 5 is too inefficient and I don't get anything done. Another advantage of waking up early is riding that focus all day after your workout. To those saying its impossible to keep a routine have not maximized their schedule. I get A's and B's and workout 4 to 5 times a week, I am by no means above average intelligence in my class. It's all about maximizing the time and adapting to the schedule.

Also correlate your resources. Time can be spent on health or the acquisition of wealth (Studying). If you aren't trying to specialize, the hours you spend in the library and NOT working out is detrimental to your efficiency as a dentist. A healthy dentist is more efficient than a dentist that knows what a fibroblast looks like. You will not understand this as I could not escape the FOMO of studying my first year either, but the school environment can be an illusion where grades don't really equal success in the real world.
