Where all ma late applicants at!?!?!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Looks like hSDN may have graduated a few too early and some appeared on a thread where many may have acted too late for this cycle. If you're looking for the cheerleaders to root you on, that also gets cut way down after hSDN. If you're looking for advice, you got some and it may have been more realistic than you expected. Other than that, I'm going to ask what you're on this thread for? If you came to SDN for moral support or unrealistic expectations, you may have come to the wrong place.

Welcome to SDN.

:welcome:

SDN is for moral support and we came here to rant not drown in self-pity and become insecure with our applications. We love advice, we appreciate advice, but no one understands what you are saying and the few words that aren't in heiroglyphics are irrelevant or wrong.

lol i've been a lurker in this thread, cuz i belong in this group

I got my mcat score back on OCTOBER 2ND!!!

So the earliest completion date for me was October 3rd for my 15 schools. Result?

ONE US MD 2017 ACCEPTANCE! and couldn't be more satisfied

Congrats!!

Hi guys. Are any of you still receiving interview invites or hoping to receive one this late in the application cycle?

I've had 4 interviews. 2 post-interview rejections and 2 waitlists. There are still 5 schools from which I have not heard back.

Drexel
Jefferson
NYMC
Temple
Toledo

Also, here is my relevant info:
MCAT:30P, Amcas Verified: 10/20/12, Secondaries completed 10/25-12/10

I am thinking about writing a letter of interest to see if I could squeeze in for an interview. Do any of you know if any of these schools interview into late April or into May? I really want to get at least one more interview. What do you think?

I think Temple and Drexel interview through April. I'm unsure how late into April either of them go.

I guess anything is possible... Especially if you live near those schools. Are you you ranked on either of those wait lists?

Do they have pre-interview waitlists?

Do they have pre-interview waitlists?

I assumed I was a "pre-interview" wait list candidate at every school I applied to, until I was rejected pre-interview at those schools. Lol I don't know if Drexel and Temple, put me in any special pool before actually inviting me to interview.

I was a late applicant (didn't fully finish all my MD secondaries until october... Afterwards, I STARTED, applying to DO schools. My last DO secondary I sent out was in December). I applied to both MD/DO. Low sGPA (3.2 to 3.3), lower cGPA (3.56), average MCAT (33R) on second try.. first time was a 29Q. Nontraditional student. Lots of clinical experience at the bedside (well over 1500 hours), a good amount of research experience w/ no first- author publications in peer reviewed journals but was a non-presenting coauthor for a poster and acknowledged in resulting publication. Handful of leadership positions. Internship with the city coroner. Heavily involved in community service (Volunteer EMT/Volunteer basic literacy tutor). I applied broadly, and to only a handful of "reach schools."

Quite frankly, I feel my interviewers weren't as interested in my research as I expected them to be.

I didn't feel like I was a "special applicant." I certainly didn't have the grades, and my MCAT was mediocre compared to some, but I am passionate about medicine and healthcare. I think that was the only thing going for me, honestly. Maybe I was lucky to get in, but it is my absolute dream to become a doctor!!!! So I am grateful to have made it this far in the application cycle.

2 Acceptances (MD)
2 Waitlists (MD)
4 Interview Invites
9 Rejections (Silent/Written)
Applied to 13 MD Schools

1 Acceptance (DO)
3 Interview Invites (withdrew after MD acceptances)
5 Schools Applied
1 Rejection
Applied to 6 DO schools

Don't give up! KEEP TRYING.

3.8, 36, verified mid October, interviewed mid March, accepted early April.

Reapplicant, applied like due to hypodollaremia and stupidity.

Kick yourselves all you want, guys, but never give up! It's a good feeling.

Love these successful late app stories! Congrats guys!

Where all have you guys been getting into late in the game? Did you send any updates or LOIs?

MCAT 7/14 (same day as you nabilesmail), verified 9/17, in-state secondaries done same day or 9/18, complete at my in-state florida schools from 9/19-9/27 (was waiting on a LOR for a couple schools that the other schools didn't require), complete on some out of states early oct.

one II received today (after being complete there for a week), waiting on the rest.

37Q (12P, 12V, 13B)

3.43 cGPA (strong upward trend)

Good ECs, tons of research.

You had Tulane as a "safety school"? My friend, with that GPA of yours, Tulane is in no way a "safety school".

I live within 5 hours of every medical school in my state. I submitted all of their secondaries on their deadlines, thus all of my interview invites and acceptances were out of state. 🙂 Financially, that will hurt me because my tuition will be considerably more, but it's in my favor to be a flight away from home instead of a short drive.

I did not send letters of intent or updates.

If I were to do this again I would only apply early for the following reasons:
1. Increased chances of getting into a state school... thus lower tuition.
2. Probably would not have needed to apply to so many places... which would have saved a couple of grand when the secondary apps are considered.
3. I would have known of an acceptance earlier. It would have been so much easier to just have known that I'm going to medical school in October or November. The stress was not worth waiting so late. I think that is my primary regret, but hey those were the cards that I chose to play right. lol

I'm at 3II / 34 schools

Hofstra- Post Interview Rejection

Jefferson- Interviewed Yesterday, hoping for the best, i loved it here

Einstein- Interviewing tomorrow!

I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR :/

I told myself I would update this thread at the end of the application cycle, so here goes. Hope it gives some of you hope. 3.7, 30L (unbalanced, low verbal) MCAT Non-URM. I submitted my AMCAS in August and took my MCAT at the end of August. I applied to about 37 schools. I was complete around October for most schools (had to wait for verification and MCAT scores). Had 9 II (3 DO and 6 MD) and 3 acceptances and 1 waitlist (Tufts). I think what set me apart was my experiences after college. I spent 2 years in Africa working for an HIV/AIDS clinic. Will be moving to Iowa to attend Carver!! Just withdrew all my other applications last week. I'm a good case example that it doesn't completely mean you're doomed if you apply late. Good look everybody. PM me if you want specifics.

Update! I mentioned here once upon a time I was a late applicant.

Application sent late September and verified mid-October. 27 schools, 5 interviews, 1 waitlist, 2 acceptances, still waiting on the other school. All US MD. Terrible gpa, average MCAT, URM (if this deters you, feel free to stop reading), lots of volunteering/work/research.

Point is, if you want it, go for it. I genuinely didn't think I would get in so I know it's easier said then done BUT I gave it my all the entire time. Don't feel sorry for yourself, just do what you need to do with what you have!

Best of luck to the rest of you 🙂

Suppose a final update would be in order.

I ended up receiving 4 MD acceptances and 1 MD/PHD acceptance (and other schools asking me to pursue their MD/PHD program).

I turned down the MD/PHD and rescinded other schools as a result of FIU (Florida International) offering me their full tuition scholarship. I chose MD over MD/PHD because I want to get to residency in 4 years instead of ~7 since surgery is of interest to me.

Definitely a more successful application season than I could have hoped for.

Hey guys! Is it even worth it for me to apply late, given that I am a Canadian and spots are limited to internationals south the border? I haven't done my MCAT yet, which is why I'll be applying late (will be taking it in the summer). My ECs are reasonable, nothing extraordinary, two research experiences (8mo/1y), two research awards, volunteering at psych ward for 8mo, EMS volunteer.

GPA is also reasonable, but nothing impressive (what I hope will be considered is my upward trend - semester by semester : 2.7, 2.9, 3.0, 3.0, 3.7, 3.9, 4.0, 4.0).

So should I apply late or will I have no chances unless I apply early next year and work to get better ECs in the meantime?

Depends on your MCAT and how well of a writer you are + your LOR

Right. I'm better in French but I think it's worth a shot. If I have a chance I'll exploit it 🙂

edit - thanks for the quick response btw!

I think how good of a writer is the phrasing for which you are looking. Sorry for being a grammar nazi, but given the context of your statement I really had to comment. 😀
