Where are the computerized charts?

Are there any hospitals out there with good IM programs that have a computerized patient chart system (i.e. you write notes and read other ppl's notes via computer; no chart-hunting, no deciphering the cardiology fellow's handwriting on a consult, etc)?

yes, there are many hospitals that have this. I believe most VA hospitals have this in place, as do many private medical centers with good funding.

it is only a matter of time before all hospitals have these systems running.

I know that all army hospitals have them. I got to use them whiel I did my IM clerkship at Ft. Eustis and they are great! Anyways, just to clarify, army, navy, and air force medical centers are not teh VA, different system. Only put that in to join the active military to be work at an army, navy, air force hospital.

Yes, I just did a rotation at the VA at my med school and I attest that their computer system was AWESOME! Then, I had to do my next month at the tertiary care center hospital, which is all paper charts for notes (although there is headway in having computerized labs and radiology), and it was such an incredible mess. I'm only an MS-III but I think one of the important things I will be looking for in residency programs will be computerized chart systems on the floors!

I sure hope more hospitals (besides the VA) will start installing such systems. I'm sure it'll cut down a lot on medical mistakes as well as increase efficiency.
